Rory and Jude knew each other almost too well to be playing one lie, two truths with each other. That didn't stop Rory from issuing the challenge at lunch time. The prize was bragging rights (and fun).

She sat with Jude outside the main cafeteria, drumming her fingers in excitement. "You want to go first, soon-to-be-loser?"

Two truths and a lie. Despite what Rory might have thought, there were plenty of things they didn't touch on. Their school lives. Their friends beforehand. Aspirations. Goals. Tons of things.

Which made the whole game an excellent excuse to learn a bit more about Rory... and to let summer learn more about him. The rather plain looking girl was sitting on the end of the table, watching the two get ready to play. She looked a shade nervous, but Rory didn't seem particularly alarming just yet, so there was that.

"I can speak Italian. I can run a seven minute mile. My entire family is my dad."

Jude was making a point of not showing any sort of reaction to any of them. If he did, she'd guess way too easily.

"How are we going to judge these, exactly? Keep going until you guess wrong? Two wrong guesses?"

Today, Rory had Joyous Waltz. Joy was a child, so she fit better at an academy setting, and sure, Rory could have brought along Quiet, but she brought him almost everywhere.

"Two guesses wrong seems good to me." Then Rory squinted at Jude. She knew Jude was Italian, and his father was a mobster. "Truth," she said to the first.

Technically the last was false. If they were counting his mother, which maybe he wasn't. Rory didn't know.

"I'm going to say the last one is the lie." It wasn't hard to believe Jude could run fast, she'd seen him fight.

"Okay! Uh. My favorite class in school was art. I was part of the debate team in junior high. And... I broke my wrist as a child when I tried to skateboard."

"Last one is a lie. I have grandparents, but no aunts or uncles. My grandparents pretty much hate me though," Jude said before Rory started her questions.

He was soft balling. Really soft balling. Only then Rory had to pop things out of nowhere and go for the throat, making Jude squint. He knew she was on the debate team. So that was for sure. Art though?

"I feel like the first one," Jude admitted. "You're kind of like me. You like right and wrong answers, and art isn't."

Whether he was right or wrong, he had new questions of his own. Alright, if she was going to play hardball, he was going to play hardball.

"I love rollercoasters. My favorite gun is the M1911. I want to have kids."

Rory laughed when he caught her lie. "Yeah. Art was far from my favorite class."

Rory listened closely to his questions. Fuck, those were harder than the last. Okay, they were getting into the heart of it. She considered him. Jude wasn't a fan of horror, but that was probably more from the gore. Maybe it bored him, even. S

he didn't know enough about guns to know which he was referencing, but he was passionate about guns...

Kids. Shit. Yikes. He couldn't have thought about that yet, could he? No to mention Jude wasn't exactly straight. Then again, his dad was Roman Catholic...

"I feel like the last one is a lie?"

After getting his reply, she went on with her own statements.

"I snagged Tabs and Tib off the street and after a long fight, mom gave in and let me keep 'em." She grinned. "I'm terrible at all card games. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a famous dancer."

"I hate rollercoasters," Jude said with a laugh. "The M1911 is probably the most common gun in the world. The old classic. Shows up in every movie known to mankind. Other things do certain things better, but people always come back to the M1911."

He left the last one unexplained. It pretty much explained itself, didn't it? Which meant he was ahead by one point.

Alright. Tabs and Tibs... probably off the street. Dancer seemed to fit her, in a weird way. Only then he started wondering if maybe he'd gotten it wrong, considering for a moment.

"Card games."

"I prefer ice cream over gelato. I prefer English over Italian. I prefer texting to phonecalls."

"Shit!" But Rory giggled (legitimately giggled) and shook her head. "It was Tib and Tabs. I bought them at a store like a normal person. Mom would have never given in to letting me keep rats off the streets. Literally never."

And they were right back to it. Shit. She had to get this one right or she was going to lose. And he made it REAL hard. She groaned. Maybe if he got hers wrong too they could do a fatality round. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Rory bit her lip. Not gelato, right? Gelato was amazing. English or Italian... well he used English more. He'd wanted to change his name to something Italian at one point, so he couldn't have disliked it that much... right?

"I feel like the texting one is bullshit. If we both get these one's wrong, we have to do another round!"

She cleared her throat. "My favorite genre of movie is romantic comedy. I went by 'Lorelai' at school. Before I became a hero I had no strong opinions about any heroes or villains."

Jude let out a groan. He'd second guessed himself and then triple guessed himself, and his second guess had been the right one.

"Well," Jude admitted. "I kind of thought you'd think gelato was better. But no, you got it right - I prefer talking, because I get all worried about how my texts are coming across without tone of voice."

So they were even. Unless he got this wrong, in which case he just lost.

"Romantic comedies," he said without even a pause.

Rory wondered if she wanted to just give him this... She blushed and stared away from him, twiddling her thumbs. "It was the Lorelai one. I've always gone by Rory..."

Before he had a chance to respond, Rory rose her voice just a tad above average, high and defensive sounding. "No one ever thought I liked girly things! So, uh, I just kind of played up to that. Uugh. I used to have this girly magazine in common with Janelle too. Shit. Don't tell anyone or else!"

God, he'd been so wrong. And now he'd made her all flustered. Jude cringed, and Summer did too.

"I'm sworn to secrecy, girl to girl," Summer said. For all her nerves, she seemed distinctly aware of what Rory was going through.

Jude cringed even harder.

"It doesn't mean anything. I like all kinds of stuff that probably isn't considered manly or whatever. But this does mean you win."
