After Hours...Almost

Dry and hot.

Those were the best two words to describe the seething summer weather that had welcomed the girl to her new home. Unlike her old home, which was humid and water abundant, this place was...something else. Regardless, she held a smile on her face and gripped the armrest of the car tightly. At least there was such a thing as an "air conditioner". A wonderful device that allowed hot places to become cool, operated by electricity. The human world was simply wonderful, even if they made decisions to live in the hottest places known to anyone.

"Miss Nerike, we're nearing the school," the driver began. "Also, um, I'm sorry about the flat tire. I'll give the mechanic the scoop."
"Scoop...?"

The trip from Nerike's old home to this one was quite the ordeal. She had taken two cars, and the second one seemed to have a liking for breaking down. The flustered driver had to stop twice due to overheating, and finally, a flat tire. Nerike was lucky to find that they had provided jugs of water for her to pour over herself. Even as a human, this heat business was not to be fooled with!

However the heat was finally disappearing, as the sun had began to set in the sky. Lightning bugs flittered about in the distance as the car began to pull to slow down.

"Once again, I'm so very sorry for the delay. L-Luckily the Administrative offices don't close until 10, and it's only 9. Ahaha.."
Nerike tipped her head. "No apology. Is fine! Thank you for...take care of me." She smiled through her strange accent and waited for the car to come to a stop.

As it did so, she once again thanked the driver, and followed the warm concrete path towards the large doors. As she pulled it open, a wave of cool air hit her face. 'Ah...how fluffy'. As they closed behind her, the masqueraded human lifted up her arms and felt the breeze from the ventilation system float along her dry skin. Unthinking, Nerike began to walk down the hallway, and turned down the corner. And again, and again. Finally she put down her arms and looked around at her surroundings.

"...Ah. Lost."

Her pale green eyes drifted about, and locked onto a strange metal object with a push mechanism. Enchanted, she flopped towards it, and pressed the lever. Sure enough, a spurt of water came out. A strange, high pitched giggle escaped her thin lips, and Nerike began repeatedly pushing the lever until satisfied with the water stained wall behind it.

"Oh, right. Lost. Hmmm..." The girl put a finger to her chin and turned in a circle.

At least she wasn't as hot anymore.

<div align=center>The coast was clear. Good.

It wasn't particularly late at night, but at this point in time there weren't many who weren't either in their dorms, at night school, or hitting the town. So the hallways were practically empty which gave the young genie only one thought- they were hers now. In a whistling tune of some generic time the young lady practically sashayed down the hall in an occasional skip. Every few seconds she would unfurl her hand, manipulating smoke that would ooze out from the spout of the little silver teapot clipped to her side. What was she going to do with it? She didn't know herself. But when the time came she'd have it ready, even if he had no use for it at all.

Well, that was until her eyes caught sight of a rather lost, rather unusual looking student.

She stopped in her tracks, watching the girl from afar while ducking behind a support beam in the middle of the hallway. How did she know she was new? Simple- she was trained to take advantage of the helpless as a part of her species. Fortunately for her, that just may be the case. This fact alone didn't get her attention. The stranger looked... Inhuman. Surely there was something she could learn or take from her. Either one worked for the genie.

Not wanting to freak her out just yet, she skipped the magic yet kept it idly by her side, trailing behind her casually. As the girl spun around the genie approached and leaned against the frame of a wall, next to the water fountain. After watching silently she stepped forth, placing a finger on top of her head to get her to stop. Whether or not it did was to be seen.

"You're gonna get yourself a wicked headache if you keep doin that." The genie grinned, raising a brow. </div>

Now normally being lost is not an enjoyable experience. However if you're a Nixie wandering about on land as a human, that could be worth debate. Especially if you were of a certain curious sort.

Nerike continued to spin a bit, surroundings blurring. Suddenly, she felt something connect with the top of her head, and she slowed to a stop. "You're gonna get yourself a wicked headache if you keep doin that," a feminine voice started. Nerike's large, shiny eyes slowly trailed up the person to find a most extraordinary being.

Her hair almost shimmered in the late summer sunset coming from the windows, and the strange teapot at her waist was cause for interest. Nerike looked into the girl's eyes and sensed something mischievous, though not malicious. She was a very pretty girl indeed. For the split second of time that came between, the Nixie wondered if this girl had come to the wrong person.

"Th-Thank you," she began quietly. She took a clumsy step back, her powerful legs tensed a bit. While this person seemed kind, Nerike took her time to get comfortable just the same.

"I-...I need hurry, because I need registration. Ah, and, um, water." The nixie felt a smile come to her face and she awkwardly touched her own arm, which was beginning to feel dry again. 20 more minutes and she would be one crinkled up human-frog.

She tilted her head once more. "Who are you," she asked.

<div align=center>Now this was certainly interesting. The new student looked rather innocent, a good thing indeed. But what struck her was that she seemed to be a pleasant person, er... Whatever she was. And even if the genie was on the conniving side that usually was something she didn't mess with. Usually. She did have a conscience as small as it seemed. And unless the stranger pulled something dirty she wouldn't try something dirty in return. Karma was very real for her, after all.

"Uh, you're welcome? Didn't know what I did but uh, wouldn't want a newbie like you to get sick on your first day." Well, yeah. That would suck. Smiling a bit she took a few steps back and placed a hand on her hip. Listening to her words the genie looked her over, observing. She looked like she needed lotion something fierce. Then again in this dry as hell school she wouldn't blame her. It took a bit to understand what she was getting at because of her broken English. But the point came across soon enough.

"Registration? That shit takes forever, believe me. It'll be like 3 am before you get to your dorm or somethin." Well, she wouldn't have cared if she didn't look harmless. Perhaps the genie would offer to keep her at her dorm but... That depended on the rest of the impressions she would receive. Upon her second comment and request for water the genie grinned, hatching up a scheme already. "Sure thing," She muttered, getting to work.

Unhooking her teapot from her belt she gestured for it, levitating it to the space beside her. Her fingers snapped to get an empty spray bottle summoned, it too poofing in mid air. The teapot on its own then filled it with water, the nozzle screwing itself on automatically once filled. She then hooked the teapot back to her belt loop and handed the spray bottle to her with a smirk. "Voilà." Hopefully that would satisfy the stranger. "Oh, and the name's Loralei. Loralei Weatherby if you wanna get formal or whatever. Yourself?" She asked, cyan eyes flicking back to the stranger's face. </div>

Nerike blinked as the pretty stranger spoke back to her. Logically, it would make sense that she went to the school here, and was a student. However, something seemed different about her. "Worldly"was the word that formed inside Nerike's mind.

The girl began to speak once more. "Registration? That shit takes forever, believe me. It'll be like 3 am before you get to your dorm or somethin." She then took a few steps back, mirroring Nerike a little.

The confused nixie-human took a few seconds to process the slang words that she didn't understand. She stood blankly for a moment before letting her face fall, and shoulders slump. 'Ah, she sighed interally, I wish they would understand. I am not human, even if I look it. Cannot live on land too long. A brief glimmer of sadness flared in the nixie's heart as she watched the girl with disappointed eyes.

As Nerike mentioned being dry, a streak of mischief gleamed in the girls eyes. She suddenly took the teapot and formed water of it's nozzle! A strange bottle appeared, and Nerike slowly took it in her freckled hands.

"Oh, and the name's Loralei. Loralei Weatherby if you wanna get formal or whatever. Yourself?"

Without thinking, Nerike perked up and a large smile came to her face. That name!
"Loralei! That name is mine! I am Lorelai Nerike!" She realized how loud her voice had been and blushed of embarrassment. "Um...thank you for bottle!" She squeezed the trigger in her hand, and to her shock and awe, water came out! The girl sprayed it onto her face and smiled once more.

"You..are very kind person," Nerike said with a sincere smile. "Thank you, again."

A ray of sunlight blocked her vision for a brief second, and the girl realized she still had to be registered. "Ah, um...maybe I should leave."

<div align=center>When the student became suddenly upset, a perplexed look crossed Loralei's face. Did she say something wrong? Or was it her nature? Maybe a combo of both. It wouldn't be the first time. Well anyway she didn't want to have to fess up to some admin that she made someone cry on her first day. That would be a major mark against her record and self. Ouch.

It seemed anyway that her gift satisfied her. It would help too, and she could keep it. Hopefully that was enough of an apology or whatever. What did strike her when the stranger revealed her name. To that, Loralei beamed the brightest she had in awhile. "Well I'll be damned." She laughed a bit, patting the new student a bit on her shoulder. "Well Lorelai it's nice to meet you. This school is weird but uh... I think it'll grow on ya." Hopefully, there were some pretty weird nut jobs around here.

Upon being thanked the genie shrugged. "Eh, don't thank me. It's what I do." She looked down at her hand, where more smoke formed. "I'm a genie. Or djinn. Whichever you prefer. Basically I grant wishes and help people out with my magic." She explained, "Usually people ask for some pretty stupid stuff, but you looked like you really needed something for yourself so I couldn't resist. Glad you like it." She concluded her explanation with a more sweet smile. Well, more than what she usually put out.

But this meeting didn't seem to be one doomed to last. Loralei tilted her head ever so slightly. "Y'know I could help you out if you want. I was alone on my first day. Pretty rough to be honest. Best to do these kind of things in pairs, hm?" She asked, hoping secretly for a yes. This person was far too interesting to bounce just yet. </div>

Nerike watched as a radiant smile spread acros Loralei's face, and felt herself being patted on the shoulder. It was a strange feeling...but not a bad one. It had been so long since she had felt contact.

As her hallway companion explained her powers, Nerike nodded throughout, taking mental notes. "Usually people ask for some pretty stupid stuff, but you looked like you really needed something for yourself so I couldn't resist. Glad you like it." She was a granter of wishes! Nerike was simply amazed. A genie with powers to grant whatever one needed. The nixie knew that she was not the kind of go on wishing for things. She absentmindedly wondered of the hardships Loralei perhaps had to go through.

"Y'know I could help you out if you want. I was alone on my first day. Pretty rough to be honest. Best to do these kind of things in pairs, hm," stated the genie girl.
Nerike did a little hop of excitement. "Surely! I mean, yes! Your company is..." she quickly scrambled for a word to use, "your company is honor for me!"

What benevolence! Nerike laughed a little, and reached into the pocket of her drab cargo shorts. She pulled out a small bottle filled with water and a tiny flower.
"This flower is for you. May I call you friend?" She held out the bottle, heart beating nervously. Making friends was difficult! "I would like to go with you!"

She could not explain with her current word set, but the flower was the only momento she had left of home. Perhaps she was foolish for giving it away, but the nixie felt it was just right.

<div align=center>Well, this girl certainly was one of the good ones. Good thing too, dealing with the psychos here got tiring after awhile. But she was nice, albeit naive. And in a school like this that might not be a good thing. Loralei then decided to herself to try to help this newbie out. Because if she didn't take advantage of her, God knows who will.

The genie then chuckled partially at the nixie's enthusiasm for her help. She was an honor? Hmf, tell that to half the people she knew around here. Nonetheless it made her feel a bit lighter and more willing to stop what she was doing for her. Especially when handed a gift. Curiously Loralei looked at her when she handed her the simple flower. For her? She took it gently, raising a brow at this new acquaintance's kindness. This was new. "Uh, thanks." She gratified simply, a small twitch of a smile on her face. "And sure. Never hurts to have more of those." With that, she stepped ahead, taking the lead. This girl was awfully kind, and even with the genie's empty conscience she felt sort of bad with her original intentions. At least she could make it up to her.

"The administration office is down the hall here. It's gonna close soon, so we better hurry." She started to walk, albeit backwards to face her. "So, where you from anyway Lorelai? You certainly look like you're not from around here, just sayin'."</div>

Nerike folded her hands in front of her and smiled as Loralei excepted her gift. She had been so lucky to find someone so kind! The genie seemed a bit careful, but Nerike had expected such things. Well, sort of. She couldn't tell what this strange place had in store.

The two began to walk, and Loralei turned to face her. "So, where you from anyway Lorelai? You certainly look like you're not from around here, just sayin'."
She made a valid point. Nerike scratched her head and smiled sheepishly. Did her human form really look that out of place?
"Call me Nerike," she said. "I was born in river. Many siblings, lots of fun. But...was lost." Her smile didn't falter, though a small pang of sadness ran through her heart. "I was lost, in town I did not know. Kind man knew of Starlight. Gave me letter, and I come here now!"

The nixie sprayed herself again with the spray bottle and looked up to her newfound friend. "What of you, Loralei?" Nerike had to admit she was extremely curious of the genie's origins. She had never encountered a genie before and did not know they existed until now. Only creatures that lived in the water and forest did she know of.

<div align=center>"Nerike... I like it." Loralei commented simply, feeling as though it was easier to have someone whose name was not just a small switch up of letters. Besides, it was unique and fun to say. But she would get to that later. What really had her interested was her origins. She was born in a lake? And lost? How... Tragic. Loralei frowned slightly, turning back to face forward as so she didn't bump into anything. "Bummer. Sorry to hear that." She backed up a bit, siding beside the other now. "Hey, well I'm glad you're here. You'll meet a whole bunch of interesting people here, and who knows? Maybe you'll make more friends. And someone could help you find your old home." Did she know who? Nope. And she knew nothing about water creatures. Which begged the question of what exactly she was. But she supposed he would find that out later.

Upon being asked her origins she shrugged, more concerned about the desk they were approaching than her own story. "I'm from Seattle." Because she would know where that was. Right. "It's... Far from here. A city. I was born a normal person but then I struck a deal with some shady guy. Then boom, I became a genie. Pretty simple really." And totally worth it. She looked back at the counter. No one was there. Looking down she saw a bell. She ringed it. Twice. Three times. Soon enough she was ringing it in rapid succession, her impatience growing.

"Hello?" She drummed her nails against the countertop, raising a brow. "Anyone here?" By the sound of it or lack thereof that didn't seem to be the case. Uh oh. "Are we too late...?"</div>
