adventures in wonderland

Annaleise had managed to finally drag a new friend out and about into the city. Her babysitters didn't see the need for her to adventure out into the big world, and she was mostly confined to the campus for the time she had been on the island.
Gripping Alfredo's hand, Annaleise wandered through the streets, happily refusing to acknowledge that she was horribly and hopelessly lost.
She had dragged Alfredo all the way out to wherever this was, and Anna stopped on the pavement to watch a small band dance by. They carried instruments on them, and filtered through the streets, loudly singing and offering out wide hats in case anyone wanted to donate to their talent.

Watching in glee, Anna became temporarily inspired to also play a musical instrument, if only to be able to join in the band. Of course, her desire quickly faded, only to be replaced with the intense desire to eat sweets, and as many as she could wrap her grubby little fingers around. "Um... Alfredo, do you see the caffee yet? Or smell it. I heard it smells good, that's what everyone else said."

The city was big and loud, but surprisingly not quite as scary as Alfredo had thought it would be, especially not with Anna at his side. She was so confident with herself it was difficult to believe anything bad could happen.

It was very big, though. When Anna had said the caffee was in “the city”, he’d figured the city was maybe, you know, ten or twenty buildings in a row with big signs.

He wasn’t the best at counting, but he was fairly certain this was more than twenty buildings.

A lot more than twenty. Alfredo had travelled before, but always in cars. He’d never had to look at the great outdoors like this, and with all the sounds and the music and the people it was a little… overwhelming.

Really, he’d kind of been hoping Anna could tell him where to go, and then they would be there, and then they could go back. Still, he had to stay strong! It was going to be okay! “Um… well, there are a lot of different smells around here, so it’s hard for me to tell… “ He sniffed at the air again. “I don’t know if it’s the right place, but something smells pretty good from… that way.” He pointed down the road, where a warm, sweet sort of scent was wafting from. “Even if we don’t find the caffee, if we find somewhere else with sweets, it’s all good, right?”

Annaleise grasped Alfredo's hand rather tightly, unwilling to admit that she was rather lost and faintly afraid of all the things that were going on around them. She didn't want to appear too underconfident, though, so she plowed on without really a set direction in mind. Her nose twitched at the familiar aromatic scent of what she remembered as coffee.

"Hey, can you smell that? It's sort of ... got a distinct scent to it. I can't describe it. It's getting closer, I think!" Perking up considerably, Anna had quickly grown bored and tired of wandering aimlessly through the city streets, but now that she had a remote direction to follow, her spirits were immediately lifted. A happy little building painted a gentle blue came into her vision, and she pointed excitedly, bouncing on her toes. It had a familiar little white cup painted on one of the windows, sitting next to a muffin studded with fat blue dots. "Look, I think that's it!" Dragging Alfredo closer, Anna released her friend's hand, pressing her tiny hands up to the glass, fogging up the window with her breath as she examined the inside. It didn't look too busy, thankfully, and she whirled back around to face Alfredo. "Isn't this fun? Let's go in."

Well, so long as Anna was happy, what could he do but follow? He had no idea what a caffee looked like, and when she pointed out the friendly little building Alfredo brightened as well. “You think so?” He struggled to keep up as she ran, then looked inside as well – though he did it from a distance. No need to get fingerprints on the glass, after all.

He jolted when Anna spun around so quickly her hair almost whipped him. Was it fun? Well, it was a relief to know they’d found something. “Fun”, on the other hand… “Well, okay.” He nodded at her request to go inside, then did so cautiously, not sure how exactly to do this.

He hadn’t had a chance to figure out how to buy things yet, but according to the teacher he just had to wait in line and choose things that were being shown and then ask for them and give people money in exchange for them.

Actually, that sounded kind of complicated. There wasn’t really a – a line, actually. Was there supposed to be an arrow pointing towards it or something? Hmm. “Um, so… what do you want?”

He asked it half out of desperation, hoping Anna would know what to do here even if he didn’t.

Annaleise whisked her and her friend inside the door and stood staring at the glass counter. Behind it lay rows and rows of sweets, just begging to be eaten. She could practically feel those little pastries marching into her mouth already. Okay! They had to decide what they wanted now. "Here, we gotta go look at their stuff." Tugging at her companion, she led the way closer to the little glass shelving.

Standing back at a respectful distance, Anna tried to ignore the attendants who were staring her down, making sure she didn't attack the glass like perhaps some other children might. "Do you see anything that looks good? I think they've got cupcakes over there, ooh, and carrot cake and short bread and chocolate. I want the chocolate cake!" The possibilities were endless in here, and she was almost about to go mad, surrounded with all this sugar. She couldn't wait until she was old enough to buy her own sweets. Then, she would truly be unstoppable.

“Al – alright.” Alfredo followed along meekly. Anna would be able to figure things out, right? Right. She was smart.

Wow, though. This food was all really cute. He’d seen this sort of thing before, but he’d never gotten any of it himself. It was just something he accepted, that rabbits were special and got special rabbit food, and wow, grapes were really tasty.

“Chocolate. Chocolate cake, right? Uh, um…” He scooted towards one of the people who were all dressed the same. “Can we have the chocolate cake? Um, two. Two cakes.”

“You mean two slices?”

“Yeah. Yeah, that sounds right.”

“For here or to go?”

He must have been staring, because the man continued, “Will you be eating here, or taking the cake home with you?”

“Oh, um. We can. We can eat here, right Anna?” Right.

‘Oh, so this is cake,’ he thought, marvelling over the spongy things that the person brought out. They looked really soft. Right, money… He took a few coins out of his pocket and pushed them onto the counter awkwardly. The man looked them over, looked to him, and said, “You’re short by two – ”

“I – I don’t really know how it works. Here. You take however much you need.” He pulled everything out of his pocket and dumped it onto the counter with an awkwardly laugh.

“…You sure?” The man gave him an odd look, but took a bill and then pushed everything back towards him. Grateful, he put his money back in his pocket.

“Right, then, we should sit somewhere, right? Oh, and here.” He passed one plate of cake to the young girl. “Buying stuff is harder than I thought,” he mumbled.
