Shara's eyes flicked back down to the spoon in her hand, her lips pursing ever so slightly into a frown. She repeated one of the variations of the mantra she had had drilled into her when she had cried or sought affection or any of the other behaviors that did not serve her purpose. "Love and hate are transient emotions. They distract from the task at hand and the mission in whole. They have no place in our work or our lives."

The counselor stopped writing and looked up from their clipboard in mild horror. The interviews with Shara had clearly never gotten this far, and clearly their questions for the children themselves didn't factor things like this in as a standard. They cast an apologetic look at Irene, bringing the clipboard to their chest.

Shara, for her part, kept her head down. Her last Handler had not liked her looking him in the eye, and she was feeling very much like this was a situation where that was best practice.

Irene paused and Asku's feathers ruffled in response to the emotions Irene was feeling.

He glanced over at the counselor, who seemed utterly shocked at this outburst, and then took in a long, slow breath. "I disagree, but I understand that it is something you have been taught. I'm not here to judge you or them or the way you lived before."

Then Irene slowly got up out of his chair and circled around to kneel down closer to Shara, mindful of giving her some space so she wouldn't get nervous or what have you. "Shara, there's more to life than just completing missions. If you just want to be a soldier then i'm not sure I can properly see to your needs. I'm not a commander. I'm a healer, a nurturer of those in great need. But if there's something else, maybe a small hint that you want something more than just following orders, I would like to try showing you what it's like to have a family that cares for you."

Irene saw in the girl all the things he'd seen in countless soldiers who got stuck pushing everything out except the war until that's all they had. And it sounded like she'd never had the chance to see things otherwise.

Shara considered all of this for a good long minute, running her thumb along the outer curvature of the spoon as she did. Her lips drew into a thin line and her eyebrows furrowed hard, the most emotion she'd really shown since arriving on Manta Carlos. Almost sheepishly, she glanced up at Irene and then looked away. "I am not a soldier, I am an assassin. And I am not even that anymore. Not really. There is no more Dominion."

He wanted her to be honest. But the truth was that Shara had no idea how to want things for herself. She wasn't a person, at least not according to her Handlers. Even now, she was here on a mission. But her false, secondary objectives meant that she could wiggle around a bit and perform her duties how she wished. She made up her mind as she justified her thoughts to herself.

"I would like to learn this family dynamic I have seen since coming here. It... would be good information to have. Educational." She nodded. Of course. Educational. And nothing else.

Irene waited patiently and calmly, still crouched down to Shara's level while she thought it over. Asku though grew bored and turned to stare at the counselor's shiny pen as they scratched out notes onto their pad of paper.

"Alright then Shara," he said quietly as he offered her his hand to shake, "that's a great start. I think I can help teach you about family dynamics." He was willing to play along with the rationalizing if that was what it was. And if it really was the only way she could see things... well, teaching her about family was as good as he could hope for.

The counselor looked baffled at first, and then relieved. They readjusted the grip on their pen, composing themselves quickly, but not quickly enough to not be noticed. Shara's mouth moved a fraction of a centimeter, almost a hint of the beginning of a smile. She stopped messing with the spoon and put it down on the table once again. "Noted. Thank you for the opportunity, Irene. And Asku."

She didn't know what this feeling was, but it was something lighter than she had felt in a long while. Not very different from being told she had performed admirably by her first Handler. His smile had been nice and he had been gentler with her than her other Handlers. Which was why the Dominion had replaced him. But there was no Dominion anymore to replace Irene.

Irene glanced over at the counselor. Clearly they were caught off guard but... well, Irene was old enough to make decisions for himself. And he'd pretty much decided to give this a solid attempt.

"You're very welcome Shara. I'm sure it'll take some time for all the checks and such to be done, but is there anything specific you would want to see in your home?" Obviously there was a whole process left to go through but Irene was fishing for ideas of what Shara would find comforting.

"No, I do not require anything extraneous to the base essentials for survival," Shara said as she shook her head once, returning her hands to her lap to smooth down the front of her school uniform's skirt. She paused and looked down at it. Someone had mentioned that it was unusual to wear the uniform all the time. Perhaps she should request more clothes? No, she decided after a second. She didn't need more clothes. And she didn't want to be a further financial burden on Irene than she already was going to be.

"I hope that I will not disappoint you and that I will live up to the expectations that you set for me."

Irene watched carefully as the girl answered. Of course she had said she didn't require anything else. But she deserved more than just survival. Everyone deserved more than the bare minimum to support life. Of course he had no idea she only had the school uniforms and basically nothing else, but he did pay attention to how she had phrased her answers.

"Shara, I hope so too. You're a sweet child and I really hope I can help provide the uh education you are looking for. But I wasn't asking if you needed extra things. I understand though it might be hard, or even impossible, for you to consider what you want for yourself. That's ok," he explained very calmly, and with a clear sense of warmth in his voice. A way of talking to people he'd practiced over countless years tending to the frightened, scared and confused. A reassuring and authoritative voice.

But there was only so long their little meeting could last. At least for the current day, for there were no doubt other potential families waiting to be brought together. Slowly he rose to his feet and Asku flapped around to get comfortable, perched on his shoulder. "Either way if you come to live with me I will make sure you get a chance to shop for things that you might enjoy. Not just what's adequate."

Shara didn't understand it. Any of it, really. No one had called her sweet. Well, that wasn't entirely true. Sometimes a happens target had called her sweet, when she had used her age to lull them into a false sense of security. But no one she didn't mean to kill had ever said it to her.

"As you say. Thank you for the offer."

The counselor was almost done writing, but they had a few more things to go over with Irene as the room got prepared for the next prospective parents and children. Shara was ushered back out to the other children, where she would sit quietly until it was time to leave.

Irene smiled as the girl was led out and then put his serious face back on to tackle the questions and paperwork he knew were coming his way. That was fine, expected even.

The phoenix pulled out his own notebook to write some of the things he'd noticed about Shara. "I can guess she has been struggling with this process. But i'm both familiar with and prepared for all the tasks and steps I need to take to work towards adoption," he explained casually to the counselor as things were about to be finished.
