Liliana actually snorted and then laughed at Finch's dumb bird comment. It was probably the first real laugh since her parents had decided she'd come to the school and left her to attend to her grandparents.

"Yes, crows are amazingly smart animals,' she agreed, glancing at the large black bird on her hand, who was eyeing her now, tilting his head to the side, like he understood everything she was saying.

"No, not so much pet birds," Liliana admitted as she smiled at the crow, "More like an affinity with certain birds... crows, sparrows, ravens, owls..." she explained as she looked at Finch again, not sure she made sense or if her dorm parent even knew what she was talking about.

"Some crows are spirit guides, psychopomps, like me... they, we, help move souls along when creatures pass on to the next life."

"Hmmmm," Finch said loudly, leaning towards the bird until he was very much in both its (and Lilianas) personal space. "I've never heard of such a thing. A psychopomp. Hmm."

There was another loud hmmm as Finch seemed to think about the whole thing.

"I will look, yes," he added. "Look into what that is. But none of the birds I talk to deal in souls. Just seeds, and occasionally.."

There was a small, shrill round of laughter from beneath his mask.

"Occasionally pooping on people in revenge, yes. Ravens are very petty. They remember. Better at people than I am, I think."

The bird cawed, either in agreement or protest, and then hopped, taking off to fly off, back through the window.

"Are you sure about that? That they don't deal with souls?" Liliana asked Finch with a small smile as she looked at the crow on her hand and gave it a quick wink, to which it flapped its wings at her and cawed as it took off.

Finch paused to consider this, making a loud hmmmmm as he did.

"Well," Finch finally said. "I don't know. None of the ones I've talked to have mentioned it, but I haven't talked to too many here just yet."

He tapped a finger on his mask, miming a thinking motion.

"Maybe. Who knows!" He didn't seem to notice the wink at all, barely even making any motion as the bird took off.

Liliana burst out laughing. She liked her dorm parent, Mr. Finch. "Crows and ravens are also wily creatures. I find. They will steal a shiny object that takes their fancy and replace it with a rock, leaf or old bottle cap, or get revenge unexpectedly for a perceived slight," she said turning to look at the birds, hands behind her back.

"Do, no, are the birds the same from where you are from?" Liliana asked with real interest, knowing, having heard, he was one of the people who had come over across the dimensional portal from a place called Halcyon.

"Mostly the same," Finch said in his screechy voice. "Birds are birds. They were upset by the birds I brought over. Strangers, with a strange way of speaking! Did you know birds have accents? They sound differently depending on where they're from. Sometimes they get lost, but they've come from a long way away, and it can be hard for them to get home. It's the same here and now!"

Finch abruptly shook his head back and forth, as if shivering, before clicking his tongue.

"Where are you from?"

A rather abrupt change of topic, but at least it made sense to him.

Liliana nodded, she did know that. All animals had accents, the same way all living things had souls... or mostly. There were a few creatures, beings that were supposedly soulless, but she refused to consider them at that moment. The idea always left her feeling disturbed and somewhat scared.

Not really thinking too much about the sudden change in topic, maybe the idea of soulless creatures had distracted her, Liliana said without thinking too much, "I am from out there originally, beyond the Veil, what they call the Narrow Reality," she explained. "I am from a place called Aberystwyth, it's a coastal town in northern Wales."

"Wales wales wales," Finch chanted in that tone of voice that meant he was probably thinking to himself. "I never visited. Not in my world, anyway. Just America. Just Halcyon City."

He bobbed his head, seemingly pleased with his answer. "Very hard to travel like this, yes. Easy to get news from elsewhere though. Birds carry stories, and help me keep up to date."

Liliana couldn't see it, but he was giving her his very best cheeky grin beneath the mask.

"Good for keeping an eye on wayward students."

Liliana frowned slightly, not at the chanting ... which was funny in its own way, but at the rather odd comment of "not having visited in his world".

"Can I ask you something, Mr. Finch?" Liliana said respectfully as she placed her hands behind her back, smiling widely when he stated that birds were good for keeping tabs on wayward students.

"Was your world similar to this one?" she wanted to know. She had heard a few strange comments here and there, over the last week or so, of the world the new arrivals had come from.

"As similar as it is different," Finch said, making a small noise in his throat as he scooted over to one of the chairs, pulling himself up into it with his arm. He was short, but at least he wasn't tiny.

"My world was very nice. A nice place. Not as nice as here, I don't think, but nice. There was no veil, but there wasn't so much supernatural stuff. No gods or psychopomps or anything like that."

He gave a wave of his hand to emphasize the all that.

"But heros! Heroes and villains and everything in between. Strange. Strange strange strange to not have them here."
