Classes had ended for the day. Normally Bal would have headed home or be on his way to get food, but today he had a slightly different plan in mind. On the surface at least everything seemed normal to most people. Truth be told there was just a swirl of emotions the likes of which he's never felt up to this point. It was strange and nerve racking. He'd asked his father if there was any way to get rid of them, the answer was a lengthy but sound no. His father didn't quite know what to tell him when he explained why he'd even posed the question. But when you're an ageless chaos entity piloting a meat suit made to imitate the creatures you enjoy watching such things are expected.

He was essentially waiting for his friend to find him. He told her to meet him after school to talk about it simply because there wasn't much time between classes and too many people around at lunch. Unfortunately for all his apologizing and promises he forgot to tell her where to meet him. He inhaled sharply as the realization dawned on him. He paced a bit, thinking of what to do. Then he remembered he had a cell phone. Said cell had her number in it, after calming himself down he wrote:

"I asked you to meet me after school and didn't tell you where.
I'm at the lake!! Sorry x100 x.x"

And with that message shot off he sat back down and began composing his thoughts. There was so much he wanted to say. But was this really okay for him to say now? Second guesses and shaken confidence plagued him. Was this real fear? She'd be annoyed with him if he brought her all the way out here and didn't tell her. Rolled from one side to the other, groaning as he did before setting on lying flat on his back waiting.

The biggest problem with Bal's text was, he didn't give her a place to meet him. That meant Tabitha had to run around campus to all of Bal's favorite places to try and find him. Just as Tabby was huffing as she climbed some steps, she got another text and checked it. The lake! She hadn't even thought of the lake!

And like that, Tabitha was on her way, running the entire way to Starlight Academy's lake. By the time she got there, she was out of breathing and doubling over. She fell to the ground beside Bal and smiled best she could without showing her teeth.

"Hey," she said around heavy breathing.

Tabitha wiggled until she was lying too, right next to him and staring at the sky. "Sorry I took so long..." there was a long pause before she said, "so what did you want to talk about?"

Tabby felt all kinds of nervous. This seemed important. A break or make sort of moment, she supposed. She couldn't say she'd ever had one of those before and so she wasn't positive about what they entailed.

She wanted to distract herself, to talk and talk until she was entirely out of breath To joke with Bal about the giant mouth said to be at the bottom of the lake. But Tabitha didn't do any of those things. She lied quietly beside him, throat tight and hands clammy.

He couldn't help but feel some guilt over the miscommunication on his part. She'd clearly been looking for him in all the normal places. Mistakes were made, he opted not to dwell on them for long. He cast her a look as she lied down next to him. Admittedly the ground was pretty comfortable.

"No, I should have just asked you to come here, but you know how I can get sometimes," he replied. He smiled as the words began to come to him. Nervous as he was, he still had the necessary courage to say what he needed to say to her. As her friend he felt he owed her that much. He got right into it at her prompting.

"I've been playing it off, but I've been kind of a mess lately. I'm not like most people that got to actually learn and grow up I just became aware by chance pretty recently. So that makes emotions kind of a weird thing for me. It's kind of why I wish I'd opted to stay younger rather than my chronological age."

He swallowed, part of him was trying to stop himself from saying the next bit. "What I'm trying to say is I don't know how to deal with any of this. I like you Tabby. Like in the more than friends way. But since the ball I've realized you don't see me like that at all. It's selfish of me but I don't know. I felt like I should tell you."

He fidgeted as he waited for a response. He wanted to curl up or run away, something. "I'm sorry," he added quietly.

Tabitha turned to watch Bal as he confessed his feelings for her. She had never seen him so fidgety. Which was weird. He looked like he wanted to run far away and hide and Tabitha knew that feeling well because it was pretty much her default mood.

She had never realized how much Bal might have cared for her. She supposed, after everything, she had assumed they were just first. He wasn't interested. He could become anything. He could be beautiful, and he wanted someone equally as attractive.

But Bal thought she was beautiful, and Tabitha couldn't recall a time when someone had ever poured their heart out to her that way. At least not genuinely. She had to assume this was genuine because the idea of Bal using her for something was just too painful. Royalty didn't matter here; it couldn't be that.

Tears built at the corner of her multiple eyes and Tabitha wished she were quick enough to wipe them all away before they were seen.

"Y-You think... I'm beautiful?" she asked in disbelief. Tears ran freely now, and Tabitha made a strangled, delighted sob.

"I thought y-you didn't think I.... well... Look at me. And look at you."

Now he was confused. Why was she the one crying? They didn't seem like sad tears though, happy tears maybe. Yes, these were happy tears. He wasn't ready for this kind of reaction. All he could do was look at her, while she processed what he'd just said to her. He offered her a tissue as the words began to come to him.

"I am looking at you, Tabby. I look at you all the time, never once did I flinch or look away. You were never ugly to me to begin with. Your eyes, your horn, your fangs, and blue skin, I like all of those things. People think I'm weird for that. I've caught crap for it too but I don't care what they think. Call it crazy or stupid, but I wouldn't lie to you. I never want to hurt you either. Especially like that. You don't really talk about it but too many people already have, haven't they?"

This was all too weird, he still kind of wanted to run away, but he'd forgotten how to work his legs. Running wasn't an option and his body knew it. He couldn't even think about what to do with his hands. What do people do in these moments? He gently rested a hand on hers. "You really are beautiful. You're also one of the nicest people I know which actually makes you more beautiful."

It was all out there now. Laid out for her to process. The thought of running was still looking favorable at that moment. But he also needed to stay, he needed to see what she would say in response to all this.

Tabitha didn't consider herself one of those pretty criers like in the movies or the young adult fiction she'd read here. She was hiccuping and stumbling over her words trying to speak. She felt snotty and gross, and her heart hurt for all the right reasons.

Bal had always been there, and Tabby always assumed he'd wanted something or he was going to hurt her somehow. More than ever since she'd become part of the Drakenhardt family. She had money and fame and power, just like back home, but he had never tried to take advantage of those things.

It occurred to Tabitha that Bal didn't care. He didn't care about what people thought or what people could give him. He was entirely without the normal selfish inclinations that most people had. How had it taken her this long to see it? Why had she been so blind?

Tabby got into a better position so she could throw her arms around him and cling to him with all the strength she could muster.

"Y-You really mean that, Bal?"

He had called her beautiful. He'd said it like they were in a movie, but this was real. He was earnest and open and raw. She stared at his face, holding his shoulders painfully tight, face demanding an answer tied in truth. Could it be real? Staring her in the face this entire time?

"Well that's a silly question, if I didn't mean it, then I wouldn't have said it," his answer was simple. He didn't flinch or break eye contact for a second. For all intents and purposes this was just how he was. If something was a waste of time he just wouldn't do it in many cases. But above that, Tabby was a friend. He wouldn't intentionally hurt her, what good would come of that. He didn't care who her family was or anything like that, he just wanted her to be happy.

Still, she was latched on pretty tight, but he cold move in ways she couldn't. He somehow in the least human of ways shifted himself into a hug. He moved back after a couple moments, letting go of her. That was an appropriate thing to do right? Was it too long a hug? He wasn't sure. "Sorry if that was weird."

She sniffled again and grinned, fewer tears streaming down her face now. She must have looked a horrible blotchy mess. "I like you're weird," she told him before leaning in to kiss him.

It was awkward and somewhat close-mouthed because Tabby hated her braces-clad teeth, but it was still a kiss. An inexperienced one. It felt odd when Tabitha pulled back and stared wide-eyed.

Why had she done that? It wasn't like they could be together. She had a boyfriend. And did she even like Bal that way? What if it ruined their friendship?

"I-I'm sorry I was emotional," she blurted out, releasing him and scrubbing with effort at her face.

Bal went from equal parts sure and unsure to utter confusion. She kissed him, no one had ever done that. She pulled away quickly enough. He was a little scared now, with no idea what this meant for the two of them. She was already seeing someone, if he really made her happy then he didn't want to get in the way of that. "Yeah... emotional," he gazed off in another direction.

He tried to think of something to say. Things were weird to say the least. "This is... we can still be friends right?" he asked nervously. "Like, I know that's a weird thing to ask... but it would suck if we stopped talking over this."

"What? Of course not Bal... I never wanna stop being your friend." Tabitha looked down at her skirt and picked at a loose string, rubbing remaining feeling of tears from her eyes. "I trust you m-more than anyone. You've been so nice to me and – and you never tried to hurt me. You're honest and kind and the best person I've ever met."
