When Tali had given Mitch Angelo's number, she'd waited a few days before deciding to contact him. She pleasantly gave her name on the phone, expressed that she was sure he didn't remember who she was because she hadn't spoken during his meeting with Tali and requested that Angelo meet her at a cafe, much like he had with Taliesen.

To further explain, she wanted to talk about the powers he'd had. Expressed that she had something similar. She had questions, and he seemed stable and smart.

It was all very cryptic, but Mitch didn't pay mind to it. The Fae tended to be that way, and while Mitch wasn't doing it purposefully, she just had so much in her head.

She'd gotten to the diner an hour early to pick a booth with a beautiful view of the streetside and ordered herself a hot chocolate and a sundae that she could finish before he arrived.

Angelo really wasn't sure what he was getting into. He barely knew the fae girl who'd traveled with Taliesen. He wasn't even entirely sure that she was a fae. She hadn't spoken at all, and when she'd called him a little while later, he'd taken a bit to even figure out who was calling.

He wasn't against meeting her--not at all--but he couldn't help but worry that... what? That she was going to warn him about something terrible? That she was going to ask for help, like some kind of poor trafficked child? He didn't know anything about her, and even her vague mention of similar powers only threw him off.

But he showed up at the cafe anyway, off duty and looking fairly casual. Jeans. A T-shirt. If not for his hair, he'd barely be recognizable compared to the way he held himself while on the job, but Mitch had seen him off-duty at least once before.

"So it was you," Angelo said as he approached the booth, recognizing her purple hair more than her face as he slid in opposite her. "You said you wanted to talk?"

"Yes!" Mitch said peppy, happy to see him so prompt. She steepled her hands on the table and breathed in to compose herself. Mitch wasn't sure where to begin!

"Your powers... the ones you gave away for your daughter you mentioned something about other things not affecting you like they did people? I have that!"

And she paused awkwardly there, trying to determine what she wanted to say next.

"I — Hrm. Where did you get them? What were you?"

Oh! So they had similar powers, and she wanted to ask why. That was... mundane. Delightfully uneventful, really. Angelo didn't exactly get to have normal sit down chats with people all that often. He was a busy man, and generally if he was talking with someone, it was over something serious.

"I was a reaper," Angelo said. "Or half. I never found out for sure, but a reaper told me I read as one, and I'm pretty sure my father wasn't my actual dad." Not exactly a strong family resemblance, for one. He'd absolutely taken after his mother.

That said, she hadn't read as dead to him, so he doubted it was quite the same thing.

"They started showing up in my twenties, and eventually I started sensing dead things. Ghosts. Undead style vampires. Things like that. And apparently to other people with the same power, I read like that too. Like I was just dead. A corpse. Powers and magic and all that seemed to think I was as well."

Mitch listened quietly as Angelo explained what he was. It was interesting, and she'd never heard of a Reaper before, but it didn't sound like what she was. Despite herself, Mitch couldn't help but seem a little disappointed.

"It was very nice of you to give all that up for your daughter. What you have doesn't sound like what I have — I ping like a weapon or inanimate object to other powers. I think I have always had it.

"Then I became this. Touched by Fae magic in The Long Dark and I found Taliesen and have been traveling with him for around a hundred years. I have never met someone even near what I am."

Mitch debated what else she wanted to say and decided if she didn't say what was on her mind, this conversation would be over far too soon.

"In Underhill, I cannot be free because of the nature of what I am. People want to own me, you see. I suppose I wondered how someone else would handle this problem. It is isolating."

Definitely not the same. They had a similar element, but their powers couldn't sound more different. When she brought up travelling with Taliesen, Angelo definitely felt a sliver of concern, but she seemed perfectly happy, considering her circumstances and her association with the fae.

"I think it's a... cultural thing, I guess?" Angelo said. "Not a lot of people have powers that can even tell for me. And those that do tend not to care too much. It would probably matter a lot of I ever went under the hill, but I don't plan to. And now it wouldn't matter anyway, I guess, since I don't."

Angelo absentmindedly scratched at a scar on his inner arm, lost in thought.

"So I guess my only real recommendation would be 'don't go to under the hill', which is easier said than done."

Mitch nodded when Angelo mentioned cultural differences. She felt a little desolate at having come to a dead end so soon in her quest for information, but she'd find a way to pick herself up.

She laughed a little at the thought of never returning to Underhill. "Maybe, but it is my home. I cannot not return, but I will be fine. I've been living there for over two thousand years!"

Mitch paused and stared at the crook of his arm toward the scar he'd been scratching. Then, she looked at his face and the scarring there, as if it were the first time she was noticing it.

Mitch was used to physical oddities. She'd noticed the scars before without really crediting them to anything. They were just part of a person, like a tail or ears, but now she found herself wondering how he'd gotten them. She'd never seen scars like the ones on his face. Not many of the Fae would show physical impurities like scars.

"Where did those come from, if you were not a weapon?" Mitch motioned to her own face to mirror the placement of the scars on his face.

Two thousand years? Angelo raised an eyebrow, trying to get his skepticism under control. That just sounded... long. Maybe he should have gotten used to the idea of people living thousands of years, but he still hadn't.

He wasn't sure he would. He didn't know how long he'd live, or how many years were ahead of him. He hadn't really been sure before, and he sure as fuck wasn't sure now.

"Eh, these?" Angelo asked, dragging the flat of his thumb across the scar along his jaw. "Just fights. Damage. Couldn't tell you where this was from, honestly. I... guess you could say I was a weapon, in a way? But more metaphorical than literal."

A weapon of the mob, in other words. Would she even get the reference?

"You seem surprised?" Mitch didn't know why. She assumed it must have been her young appearance.

She nodded when he motioned to the scars on his face before sitting on her knees to lean over the table and poke at the scar on his inner arm. "And that one.

"Aren't all people weapons metaphorical instead of literal? I suppose unless you turned into a literal weapon, but I don't do that so it's not like anyone could pick me up and swing me around — well, they could, but it wouldn't be too effective!"

Mitch sat back, remaining on her knees. Her grinned died down. "Mostly, I think people just try to trick me to going to their Courts so they can, uh, steal me or something! I'm not sure it's never happened before."

Angelo snorted.

"There's at least a few of those on the island. People who turn into literal weapons, I mean. But you're right, most people are weapons in a more metaphorical manner, like I was. I couldn't even tell you where all these are from. Pretty sure this one..." Angelo paused, running his fingers along the visible part of the scar along his arm. "Was from running through a burning building. Escaping, I think? Most people remember how they got their scars, but they all kind of run together for me. Age, I guess."

Whether that was because he was so young when they happened, or just because it'd been so long since it had happened remain to be seen.

"Can't say I really... get the fae. Like, in human terms the idea of luring someone out to steal them is... really bad. But it's normal with the fae. There's a cultural gap there that... I don't know if I'll ever get."
