"Yeah. He's been to a couple of different earths. Sometimes it gives him kind of a soft reset for conning a soul out of someone. And he can sort of exist in multiple places at once."

Thinking this much about her dad was bringing her down.

"By the way. I still have this thing from when I was visiting Dalia in juvie." Chloe pulled a payment card out of her purse and showed Evan. "I think it has money on it still. Want anything from the vending machines?"

Alright, touchy subject. He could get that. He could avoid it.

"Why am I not surprised Dalia was in here before? But you don't need to worry. Someone topped me up, I've got more snack money then I could ever spend." That wasn't even counting the fact that he barely ate any snacks. He'd gotten used to eating meals and nothing else.

"Honestly? You just visiting is... enough. More then enough. It's boring in here. It's nice to have visitors. If I was going to be here longer I'd say letter writing would be nice, only I'm definitely not going to be here that long."

But if he was, you know, letters would be nice.

Chloe looked surprised to hear about his snack money. Why was he getting all that money? Would it be tacky to ask? She'd let that sit for a second.

"I'll keep that in mind if you ever go to jail again," Chloe smirked. Not that she expected him to ever end up here again. At least she hoped he wouldn't.

"You know, I was just thinking, on the way over here. Aside from my daughter, you're technically my closest relative on this whole planet. Nobody else is even from the same universe as us. I mean..." she shrugged. "Yeah, It's kind of a stretch, I know."

Evan actually laughed at that. At the whole thing, really. The idea of being her closest living relative. The idea of going back to jail.

"God no," he said. "I'm not going back to jail. This is a one time thing, a desperate measure. After this I'm going straight. You won't even catch me jaywalking."

Okay, maybe he'd still jaywalk, but she got the picture.

"Never really thought about it. I guess it's true, though. Totally different bloodlines here. My family had magic in them, but that's now over." He'd ended the entire fucking family line, hadn't he?

"That was the version of them in this world," Chloe said. "And I'm not even sure I could think of them as family anymore, if I was in your shoes." They weren't the people who raised him. They had kidnapped him from another world so they could use him as a tool of some sort.

"But, if there's any sort of genetic basis for being an aberrant, or whatever we should call that, we might be the only ones here with that. If that makes sense?"

The genetic factor was something people had talked about it a lot. Like it was some part of their DNA that gave them powers, and that if only they could find it, they could cure it. It was easy for someone like Evan to say he didn't want a cure, but there were also people who were seriously debilitated by their powers. It was a complicated issue, but definitely not one that could be solved by we've found the key in your DNA!

"Seems like it," Evan said. "Honestly? I always chalked it up to magic. Even if we didn't, uh, have magic. It felt like there was an alien or something that landed and seeded us with powers and then... I don't know. My family--my parents back at home--always used to speculate about stuff like that."

"I hadn't even thought of it that way," Chloe admitted. "But... I kinda feel like I should have, by now. Because, knowing what my dad is, I don't think he even has genetics, but I know I got stuff from him. And the way my daughter..."

She stopped herself. Talking in depth about how her daughter was conceived might be a bit too much information, but it was weighing heavily on her mind again.

"I'm going to leave it at, she has two moms, and neither of us saw it coming. And I'm not so sure how much it involved genetics. But she definitely inherited things from me. And what I'm getting at is, there's so much probably-not-genetics in my family that I should be open to the idea that it's just some weird magic stuff."

She had two moms and it wasn't planned seemed, uh, off. The confusion probably showed on Evan's face as he tried to puzzle it out, before deciding that, you know what? He wasn't going to ask. Not his business.

"Magic makes shit weird," Evan admitted. "I try not to think about stuff at all. The more I think about it, the more confusing it gets."

"That's part of the beauty of it though." Chloe said. Scholar of the arcane that she was, she had a few interesting theories and facts to add to the conversation.

Eventually, visiting hours would end, and Chloe and Evan had to go their separate ways. Chloe would give him a strained smile at the end. "Let me know when you get out, alright?"
