Fun meant things that were enjoyable. This did not help Goodall understand what the point of bouncing on these devices was. Maybe if he...?

A large tentacle appeared coming out of the floor next to one of the floor-trampolines and pushed it downwards. He let the elasticity of the trampoline carry the appendage upwards a little bit, then pushed it down again. He did this at about the rate that Eliana was bouncing on her trampoline.

He didn't feel any different. The experiment was not a success. "I DO NOT THINK THAT WAS EFFECTIVE. I DID NOT EXPERIENCE FUN." the tentacle retracted back into extradimensional space. "LET ME TRY SOMETHING ELSE."

Another large tentacle sprouted from the boundary between four of the trampolines, then tried to reach out and wrap around Eliana's waist, so that he would be loosely holding on to her while she bounced. His thinking was, he would be able to feel this "fun" sensation through her if he maintained contact.

Eliana watched as the tentacle bounced. Huh. She had assumed he wouldn't be able to, what with the thing coming out of a strange portal....whatever the fuck. Learning new things every day! It was more of a surprise (not an unwelcome one, mind you) when Goodall wrapped the tentacle around her waist. Eli almost couldn't keep upright with how hard she laughed.

"Okay, wait wait. You didn't know what fun was, so how do you know if you're experiencing it right now? Maybe you're feeling it, but you just don't realize it?"

Eli figured his using his tentacle to bounce on a trampoline was the equivalent of her using only an arm or leg. Okay, she could see where that might not be as 'fun.' New idea! Batting cage. You do that with arms. Also, she might see him get hit which would amuse her greatly.

Yes, Eliana was fully prepared to spend the rest of her night (and the next few days) trying to get Goodall to experience what fun was. Her flirtation completely forgotten, this was the new goal, first and foremost. The Demon liked a challenge.

She got off the trampoline, trying to take Goodall with her. "New idea. We're going to the batting cages. You might like that better. We get to hit balls with a bat. What's more fun than hitting things with a bat, I ask you?"

Goodall thought he was starting to feel it. Through Eliana he could feel... Something like amusement? It was pleasant, whatever it was. Was this "fun?"

Baffling. What could have happened in humans' evolutionary history to make their brains reward them for jumping around and nearly killing themselves? Or to make striking objects enjoyable, for that matter? Did humans even evolve, or were they invented? Because that was starting to make more sense to him right now. This "fun" was too weird to be explained by natural processes.

Eliana seemed to stop experiencing the fun when they got off the trampoline, which meant Goodall stopped experiencing it, which made him a little sad. He liked that feeling, and he only got to experience it through her in a brief burst. Now he was feeling a mixture of curiosity and anticipation through her. He stopped holding on to her, and that tentacle around her waist slipped out of her three dimensional space.
But he was getting excited for the batting cage. Even if he didn't think striking things in three dimensional space would be enjoyable for him personally, Eliana seemed to think it would be fun. Goodall wanted to feel the "fun" again. His hatted tentacle followed her closely.

"I DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS MORE FUN THAN HITTING INANIMATE OBJECTS. I HAVE MUCH TO LEARN ABOUT FUN."

Goodall was also curious what role the winged mammal wpuld play in this ritual. He hoped it didn't involve injuring the bat. He didn't like hurting things.

"Yeah you do!" Again, Eliana had no idea what a tentacle (or whatever creature was behind the tentacle) knew about fun or anything else, but it was enjoyable just going from the ground up and what not.

No time wasted, Eliana led Goodall to the Manta Carlos Batting Cages. To her, the idea that real bats would have been there was amusing, but alas, no, it was baseball. There was a batboy playing at the batting cages, which the Demoness was prompt in pointing out with some long winded quip about hitting bats with a bat or having a batball.

Eli paid for a batting cage and turned the machine at the far end on. Getting back into position, she wiggled her hips and held the bat high after hitting its head on the ground thrice. "Are you planning on hugging onto my waist, or whatever, again? Or would you rather try to hit the ball? Not sure how much--" She cut herself off as she eyed him. "Eh. Actually, you might. You might have the leverage to hit a ball. Guess you would. Yeah."

The machine whirred before a baseball flew directly at Eliana's face. She snapped to attention, squeaked, and swung her cocked bat forward. She hit the ball just enough to redirect its course from her face. "This means war."

"YES WILL HUG," he said. "CAN FEEL WHAT YOU FEEL IF HUG." Once again, a tendril wrapped around her midriff.

Eliana mentioned war. She was experiencing a sort of aggression, but it wasn't like what he had felt in memories passed on to him from the war. It wasn't an all-consuming hatred and a need to destroy and to cause pain. It was... Light hearted, almost. Goodall hadn't known such an emotional state could exist. A light hearted and fun aggression aimed at inanimate objects.

Goodall could only start to imagine the evolutionary pressures that would lead to this sort of emotional response. Did the ancestors of humans, the proto-humans, regularly engage in war with small spherical creatures? Was this why striking the orbs generated the 'fun' response?

But it was generating the fun response. Goodall could feel it the fun. He could feel the pleasure that resulted from successfully striking the orb, of overcoming the challenge whenever she landed a solid hit.

After a particularly satisfying strike, Goodall asked, "DID YOU EXPERIENCE A FUN FROM THAT"

Go figure that a tentacle monster could only feel emotion via hugging. That was almost too much for Eliana to handle, thankfully balls were flying at her face (go ahead, think dirty, we all know you are).

Yes, there was something about a strike hitting that sent Eliana over the moon. It was a small, violent achievement and she liked to imagine she was hitting people she found annoying. It was harder to get in the zone with a giant tentacle wrapped around her waist, but who was Eli to complain? Nah, she'd go with it -- even if it did cause a ball to catch her by the shoulder. Whatever! No one even saw.

"I did! I thought you could feel it?" The demoness laughed heartily and glanced down at Goodall. She was on guard now; these baseballs meant business. When no more shot from the machine, she relaxed her stance.

"What is your realm like that you've never experienced any of these emotions?" Eliana didn't feel a whole hell of a lot, so seeing a species that felt even less than her was boggling. If not for fun, what else did they regularly feel? Curiosity?

"I CAN FEEL THE FUN. I DID NOT RECOGNIZE IT." That sensation whenever she hit a ball - it was satisfying, but alien to him, even when he could feel it himself through her.

"VERY DIFFERENT," he said of his own realm. "WE FEEL LOTS OF EMOTIONS YOU WON'T DO UNDERSTANDS OF. EMOTIONS WITHOUT WORDS." Unfortunately, humans didnt seem to have any way to directly read the emotions of other beings, so they wouldn't ever be able to understand some of the things he felt. It amazed Goodall that these creatures could maintain a society without perfect knowledge of each others' emotions.

"YOUR THREE WAY REALM IS CONFUSING TO US," Goodall concluded. He did not know the word for 'dimensions.' 'Way' was roughly the same thing though, right?

It didn't make sense to Eliana that Goodall's people could feel more than her, but still not understand the concept of fun? Or was it that he couldn't know what fun meant to the population of this dimension? Or, or, or maybe he experienced most of these emotions but had no words to describe them?

Eli took a second longer to consider all these possibilities, but she didn't comprehend it any better than before. The Demon stood straighter and left the cage to return the bat to the handler. Now her mind was on this whole crazy dimension of his.

It wasn't that Eliana had an interest in attempting to view it because that would have been too much energy, but she was frustrated by her inability to grasp what he felt.

"Tell me more about your people," she said as she leaned against the chain link fence and stared at him, arms crossed under her bust.
