While the cloudless, sunny afternoon would appear beautiful to someone like Diedrich, his current temperament found him less than appreciative. He sat in the Salvetti Bros. Booksellers, set in Downtown Monte Carlos City amidst casinos and night clubs. Why the two chose to build here he'd never know. Regardless, the young man was tasked with overseeing the purchase, donation, or return of books. This was complicated by the intensifying heat that steadily developed throughout the day.
As it turned out, the air conditioner was a fairly aged beast that would sooner die than work properly. Thankfully, he wasn't in charge of the store's general upkeep and maintenance; that was the task of a larger, more successful book retailer. Still, since the German was without any means of opening windows, he was stuck fanning himself and sitting near the only cash register in the entire establishment. That, and he wasn't too privy towards the idea of keeping the front door open.
Foolishly, Diedrich had decided to dress in his usual sort of attire: a white dress shirt, a red, single-breasted waistcoat, a black frock coat, matching black trousers, and a black bowler hat which was stowed underneath the counter. Still, enduring the heat for a day was worth looking fashionable. He absentmindedly perused the shelves behind him, hoping to find a book to pass the time.
