"That does seem very romantic. To see the real physical manifestation of your work on the day must be rewarding," Arthur commented. He had never had the opportunity for a true wedding, but having attended a fair share of them himself, he understood how romantic they could be under the right circumstances. Sometimes it was still a little painful listening to the vows, but it had been too long for it truly hurt.

He raised an eyebrow when she mentioned her parentage. At this point he was no longer surprised at the scope of heritages in this island, but it was always good meeting fellow demigods. "I suppose my job is appropriate in this regard as well. My grandfather was Tyr, the Norse God. A protector of justice."

"Well, I suppose quite a lot of my job is very practical," Arthur answered. He was speaking a lot more than usual. Normally, aimless small talk made him want to leave, but he didn't mind being close to Evangelina just for the time being. "Not precisely a protector of justice. I just argue in court for whoever needs my help. And often the outcome is not nearly as romantic, but I try my best."

Evangelina nodded and smiled a bit wider, delighted Arthur could understand what she was talking about. During her life Evangelina had planned and executed countless weddings, and every single one was unique to her.
"It all makes even debating the position of the tableclothes or the colour of the toilet towels worth it."
Evangelina chuckled, those weren't even the most ridiculous details she had had to fight the couple for.

The way Arthur raised his eyebrow made Evangelina slightly paranoid, could he sense she wasn't telling the whole truth? Evangelina's mother was Santa Muerte, the goddess of death and reason why she was cursed, and she didn't enjoy discussing it. Evangelina loved her mother, but she didn't blame her for the curse.
When Arthur admitted his grandfather was a god Evangelina blinked and looked surprised for a second.
"Well, seems like we both chose a career appropriate for our heritage. Although your purpose is much more noble."
Evangelina chuckled and noted absently that Arthur looked somehow tragically handsome in the rain.

Evangelina was often quite talkative, and though she shared a lot of things about herself she always felt people were miles away from her. She made sure of it. But Arthur, in this early autumn rain, seemed much closer than anyone had ever been. Well, almost ever...
A memory slashed through Evangelina's mind like a knife and she almost needed to gasp for breath. But she kept a brave face as Arthur spoke. It had been 17 years but it still hurt. Now even more so, because these feelings in her chest brought it all to surface.
"Your work is much more important than mine. I do not think it's unimportant, but when compared I'd imagine anyone would argue helping people goes over romance."

Arthur gave an amused grin at Evangelina's comment about the clients's pickiness. The reaction surprised himself a little. Normally, he was very focused on keeping a serious disposition, just something that came naturally to him as jokes do to some others. But with Evangelina he seemed to feel a little more comfortable with joking and conversation.

He shook his head when Evangelina commented on the nobility of his profession. While he did his best to help, there were times where he had to help people nobody else wanted to help, and there were times where his best just wasn't enough, no matter what. It would always be a point of regret for him. "Noble would be a kind way to put it, but dishonest, I suppose. In my line of work I often have to defend people who are clearly guilty of atrocities, and often I find myself unable to refuse. Not noble so much as necessary."

If he was feeling cynical, perhaps a necessary evil. But it was not the time.

Valerie had been much more optimistic than he was, with her specialty a little further removed from criminal law than Arthur. She had specialised in human rights law, a truly noble choice with very little payback. She was always quite the altruist.

He returned his attention to the conversation in front of him. It had been a while since he had lost himself to memories, and there must be a reason for it. Evangelina, he supposed, reminded him of her. Just a little, but the resemblance was there. "All jobs are important. Romance is an integral part of humanity, after all. Nobody deserves to be alone."

Ironic, coming from him, but true.

Evangelina had a schedule, a rather strict one. But in this moment she had forgotten all about it, and she never did that. Yes,, Evangelina was klutzy, a blabbermouth and sometimes even forgetful. But she never ever neglected or forgot about her work, because that meant she did the same to her customers. But something about Arthur made Evangelina forget about everything else. And she had started to suspect what it was, although she didn't let herself think about it. Not yet. Not when Arthur was still just a stranger, grinning at her. Evangelina grinned a bit back and chuckled.

Evangelina was hopelessly positive, even when she tried to stay realistic or even think negatively. So even though Arthur shook his head and denied her words, that his profession was noble, Evangelina couldn't help but see the lighter side. She smiled a bit and also shook her head slightly.
"I'm not making anyone a saint, but I'm a hopelessly bright person. I cannot help but think that even though you sometimes defend people guilty of their crimes the amount of innocent people whose names you clear more than makes up for it."

Due to the situation Evangelina's mind, against her will, made comparisons with the last person Evangelina had felt something like this with. Arthur did not remind Evangelina about Julio, not through the first impression. Julio had been a sensitive artist, that saw beauty where most only saw filth. Arthur seemed practical and rather stoic, if Evangelina had a type he wasn't it. And yet, when he told her no one deserves to be alone, she wished she could've agreed. But...
Evangelina smiled a little, her mind was suddenly heavy and dark with guilt and sorrow.
"Thank you. As I said, it's not like I think my work is unimportant. I have never been married and will not be, but I find it important to celebrate the union of two people that were able to find each other. In a way love is a miracle, it should be treasured."
