A Quiet Moment

Today was a nice day, with clear skies for the most part. It was early in the morning, roughly around 10 'o' clock. Lunch classes hadn't started yet, meaning the area was quite.. empty, with not many wandering around. That was, except for people like Julius, who currently was exploring the area for once with a rather pleasant smile on his face.

Julius usually didn't come to the school often. For starters, he'd already graduated- but he also had an aversion to large bodies of people. And most of the time, the area surrounding the school was swarming with so many people with different feelings- it reminded him of his college days, and, frankly, was hell on earth. So he tended to avoid it as best he could.

That said, he loved the area, it was absolutely gorgeous. He'd visit more if he could, but he was usually working in the morning, which made it difficult. Still, at least he had moments like this where he could simply wander. He took a moment to stop in his tracks in a particular spot closer to the entrance of school grounds and close his eyes, snipping the air with this dopey smile on his face. He loved the outdoors so, so much.

It was possible that someone could assume he was a student skipping class, or just some creep trying to mess with the kids, but frankly at this point he just didn't care.

It was a beautiful day, nice and warm, several clouds drifting lazily in a clear, azure sky. It was just like home. Well, it was quite a bit warmer than home, but Theo supposed that the only place where he could really feel like he was at home was, well, home. And he wasn't home. Sometimes he had to remind himself that he really did respond to the letter and he's on an island in the middle of nowhere now.
There was nobody as far as he could see. This made him feel a lot better about things. After all, it was easier for him to be alone and think. Theo was taking a doctorate program after all, and the classes here were surprisingly flexible - it looked like he was one of the very few students studying law here. He decided that he could have this morning off to get his bearings.
The school was big. At least the side of an average University campus, housing students from kindergarten age right up to people like him doing postgraduate studies. It made him feel a little uncomfortable and frankly way too old to be here. The surrounding areas, though, were similar to home, scores of trees and most likely ponds as well, although no lakes as stunning as where he lived.
His thoughts distracted, he didn't notice the other young man before he was maybe a dozen feet away from him. he probably try to make some friends. After all, the guy looked about his age.
"Hey!" Theo called out. "Nice to meet you. Are you also taking some time off out here?"

Honestly, Julius hadn't even been paying attention to the nearby surroundings anymore, lost in thought. After all, with such nice weather and a nice, quiet atmosphere, it was hard not to.

Of course, this was distracted by a familiar wave of emotion he was used to when others were around. It was faint, meaning the person was likely at the end of his range. He didn't like being intruded on during his down time, but it was only one person. And, besides, it seemed to be a positive emotion. It certainly seemed someone was enjoying the weather just as much as he was.

At the very least, it allowed him to look towards the individual right before they'd even noticed him, it seemed- hopefully it didn't make him seem creepy to have done that- and as he was greeted, he couldn't help a tiny, albeit slightly awkward smile. He looked nice, close to his age. This was a set up for a nice talk, if he played his cards right.

"Oh.. yes, I am," He spoke quietly, remaining in place so the other could approach, but not taking any steps closer himself, "It's nice here, when it's quiet and empty like this.. Um, I'm not a student here though, in case you were wondering. I'm just enjoying the sights." He paused, before offering a hand to the man before him. "I'm Julius. Julius Winston. It's nice to meet you, too."

Theo smiled and walked closer to the man - Julius, a fairly uncommon name -, accepting the handshake. He tried to be nice to everybody he came across, but sometimes kindness just wasn't accepted very well. Sometimes people are tired, sometimes they've had a bad day, and most of the time they just wanted to be left alone. He was glad that it turned out mostly normal this time.

"Yep. It is beautiful out here. Reminds me a bit of home." Theo said, then immediately regretted it. This island was supposed to be a fresh start. No more mentions of what he was before. "I'm a student. I study law."

"My name is Theodore Bishop, but most people just call me Theo."

Julius' gaze never left the other man as he spoke, giving him a rather gentle handshake as he took in every word. He was, overall, giving positive emotions- and in turn, it made Julius feel positive and confident in this conversation. Happiness trickled from him just a little bit as he stood there, listening and smiling like an idiot.

"Well, Theo, I'm glad I had the chance to run into you," He said with some cheer, "You must be incredibly smart to be a law student. I.. um, well, I'm into programming.. It--.. It's fun, for me."

He trailed off a bit towards the end as he shuffled his feet, looking down at the ground and biting his lip. He truly hated saying what he did for a living. He usually either got a lot of questions about it, which made him feel put on the spot, or they'd call him a nerd. He figured Theo wasn't like that, but it still made him slightly nervous.

Obviously, this meant he needed to change the topic. "So," He said happily, his cheerful demeanor returning, "You said it reminds you of home, yeah? Your home must be a wonderful place, if it does- I know this place is especially great." He was worried this would push buttons as he had felt something odd when "home" was mentioned, but.. perhaps it would be alright.

Theo laughed lightly when Julius mentioned something about being incredibly smart to get into a law program. He wasn't incredibly smart. All he had was some reckless determination and a decent family background. To be frank, he actually felt a little embarrassed. A lot of kids with tougher backgrounds than him make it to better universities and end up with better GPAs. He was just normal.

"No, no, I'm not that smart. Law isn't that difficult. There's just a lot of memorization. I'm aiming to become a defense attorney at one point," Theo grinned. David had once said that to him as well. His stomach churned and his breath caught for a second in his throat, but he let that smooth over with a smile. He's gotten really good at that. "Programming! Cool! I know some basic Python, but a lot of the concepts go over my head. I've never been that good with computers."

He was a little surprised to feel an unrequited amount of embarrassment but brushed it off.

"My home is a nice place," Theo said, avoiding the topic cleanly. Yes, nice. The Lake District was certainly pretty. No, nice. His parents's frigid looks and dark stormy arguments certainly weren't. "This place is beautiful, though. I agree with you on that." Theo paused.

"Have you been here for a while now?"

Julius perked up with surprise at the laughter, but quickly found himself in a state of thought at the.. odd wave of emotion he'd just felt from the other. It caused him to purse his lips as he studied the man's smile. It was, perhaps, a simple lapse in mood, perhaps a bad train of thought- but it was unsettling. He certainly hoped the other was alright.

Despite this, he quickly fell into a kind smile of his own. "Well... I think you're very smart, to be here. Um-- if that's okay to assume. You shouldn't be so.. hard on yourself." It was an attempt to boost his mood, more than anything. Despite his socially awkward nature, he hated when people were upset. "At the very least you have your hair.. I'd kill for hair like that."

He soon looked away as he continued, his expression turning somewhat shy. "I-I could show you some time, though, if you'd like. Computers.. are very close to me."

While he didn't show it, Julius internally winced at how short the answer had been, as well as how quickly he'd changed subjects. Okay, so home might have been a bad topic. He messed up there. Thankfully, the other was smart enough to change topics rather than dwell on that blunder.

Even if said topic was one he feared would bore the other. "Umm," he hummed softly, shrugging a bit in suit with a slightly chuckle, "Not really, no. I moved her early this summer. I.. wanted a break from all the noise of the rest of the world. This seemed like a good place to do that..."

He wanted to ask how long the other had been here, but he was a bit concerned that would relate to the clearly unwanted topic of "home," so instead he gave a friendly smile. "And, well, if it has people like you, I think I made a good choice."

"Ah, no, I'm not being hard on myself," Theo smiled gently at Julius. Maybe it was part of his upbringing, but Theo just couldn't take compliments. He tried his best to push them away and if the other person insisted it always left a burning feeling at the bottom of his throat.

"Oh, my hair?" Theo blushed a little. He ran his hands through his charcoal-coloured hair and grinned, looking down at the floor. Nobody had ever complimented him on that before. Usually, it was a remark about how his eyes were "unique" or, more commonly, "creepy". "T-Thanks! That's really kind of you!"

"I'd love to see how programming works," Theo said. People love showing others what they were good at, and he was always up to learning something new.

He was glad when the topic turned away from his home. He could go on about the Lake District all day, and maybe even his brothers and sisters, but his parents were a touchy subject.

"Ah, I see. The world is a big place, and there aren't many peaceful, quiet places left anymore," Theo mused. His mind was returning to London, where his University and where - No, Theo, no more. "And wow, thank you!" He blushed again. "Is everybody here as sweet as you are?"
