The pier was an awfully crowded place to be on a Friday night. Anna was on one of her excursions again, exploring the world outside of the academy. It was hot, so she'd picked a pair of shorts and a crop top to keep herself cool, despite the sun having been down for a little while now. She didn't feel terribly out of place - there were plenty of tourists here still in their swimwear, likely from a day at the beach, or similar clothing to her own.

Looking to escape the crowd for a bit (her claustrophobia was creeping up on her), Anna took a turn down between two of the buildings and slipped into the alley behind them to see what was back there.

A few boys stood by a green dumpster, smoking and drinking out of bottles wrapped in paper bags. As soon as she'd turned the corner, they all turned to look at her. Anna gave a casual smile and continued to look around. "Hey, come have a drink with us, won't you? 'S good stuff," one of them waved his paper bag at her. "No, thanks, I'm not of age," she declined politely. Unfortunately, it seemed the group wasn't of age either, and not going to have 'no' for an answer. "C'mon," another started to weave towards her, clearly unsteady on his feet, "we can have some fun together."

The next thing she knew, Anna was being chased. Being polite hadn't worked at all with these people. Of course, running back out into the crowd would have been the obvious option, but they'd effectively blocked her exit before she realized she needed to be running. Turning around, Anna took off down the alley towards the end of the pier.

A propped-open door provided sudden relief for Anna's flight. With the boys at her heels, she reached out and yanked the door open, kicking out the doorstop and slamming the door shut behind her. Out of breath, she leaned against the door and tried to get the world to stop spinning.

The night was young and the music was thriving as Vanessa Scarlet, owner of the Siren's Song, was ending her final song for the night's opening. Her voice speaking to the hearts of her audience and tugging on those strings making them feel drawn to the stage like the sailors of old. True she toned it down so her clientele only got the faintest glimpse of her power so they didn't surge towards the stage in a min. But they came to see the performances and hear her sing. As her song came to a climactic close most of the audience was clapping in thunderous applause. "Thank you all again so much for being here tonight. Please enjoy yourselves and let the shows begin." With that Vanessa smiled and waved while she walked off stage.

When she got into the wings of backstage she saw on of her guards waiting for her. Her smile faded as she walked up to the big man. "What is it now? " she asked a little annoyed, it certainly was early for there to be trouble.

"there is an intruder who wishes to talk to you near the backdoor." The mans voice sounded like it was sea soaked drift wood rubbing together but it was familiar. Vanessa was never going to ask him to sing in any case. But her mind latched onto what he had said.

It was odd to hear that anyone had gotten in through the backdoor. It was a one way door barely used at all. Someone must habe forgotten to shut it. She would find out who later. Right now she walked towards the backdoor in fluid graceful steps. Upon turning the corner she saw a young girl standing next to her other guard almost as big as the first. "You must be our little stow away. What is it that you want before I throw you back out to the sea to whatever fate has in store for you?" Vanessa's words came out harshly.

Anna had barely caught her breath by the time she realized a huge hulk of a person was approaching her. Her mind was so frazzled by the panic of her flight that she wasn't sure how to explain her presence in...wherever she was, but she begged to speak to the owner so she could properly explain herself and maybe get out of here another way than through the door she'd just entered, for surely the boys would be waiting for her on the other side, and then she wasn't sure what would happen. She wasn't nearly big enough to fight them off.

The owner who approached her with another guard seemed pretty upset that she was here. Anna quivered a little beside the big man while her brain scrambled for words. "I'm sorry," better to ask forgiveness than permission? "I was being chased."

Something inside her felt...off, and she wasn't sure if it was from being so spooked by all of this. It was like, when she looked at the woman, she felt some sort of weird connection to her. "Please. I don't want to cause any trouble. I might be a siren, but I have no idea how to defend myself yet, and they might still be out there." She had no idea why she'd provided that information, it just sort of...came out, like it was being pulled from her lips without much thought.

The young girl explained that she had been chased before coming into trespassing into her home. "Be glad that my men didn't need to interupt me while I was performing. If this was back when this city was young I would have flogged you as punishment just for this..." Before she continued the young girl stepped in pleading and saying that she herself didn't know how to defend herself even if she was... Putting a hand up to stop the girl continuing after her words. "You are a Siren?" Vanessa looked the girl up and down.

Most of the Seafolk be they fae or not she tended to keep an eye on them. Not speaking her mind yet she looked between the two guards before turning her back. "Bring her." was all she said and she pretty much assumed that the girl would follow her either due to her own will or because her guards would intimidate her into following.

When the Siren's Song was The Cove during the weekdays Vanessa used an office behind the bar to be closer to everything if anything went wrong. But as this was not the weekdays Vanessa walked towards some stair leading up to above the performing area. The door opened without a sound as Vanessa pushed it open and the quiet sounds of classical music spilled out. Stepping in Vanessa went to a very old Ship Captains desk that she had kept immaculate condition from back when she first started here on the island, and promptly sat down on the edge.

Vanessa looked at the girl contemplating for a moment before she simply waved her hand to dismiss the two guards who left without words. Waiting for the guards to leave the room and close the door she looked at the girl. "If you are a Siren I'm going to want proof. Sing for me."

Anna was cut off before she could say any more, and nodded cautiously in response to her question. She swallowed hard. Had she said the wrong thing? For her own sake, she hoped not. Anna had no choice in the matter as she was more or less herded along up a flight of stairs and into what looked like an office.

When the woman demanded that she sing, Anna raised her eyebrows at her. This lady was all intimidating and such, but she hadn't expected such a request. At least it was something she knew she could do. "Okay..." Anna looked around for a moment and spotted a lute hanging on the wall, pointing to it, "may I?" Once given permission, Anna took it carefully from its spot and stroked the strings gently, testing the tuning. Much to her surprise, it was already tuned perfectly. This woman kept her artifacts in very good condition.

Sing...sing...pick something, Anna. Anything.

With a few strums of the lute, Anna was off.

"Sunday morning, rain is falling
Steal some cover, share some skin
Clouds are shrouding us in moments, unforgettable
You twist to fit the mold that I am in..."

She pulled music from the strings with her fingers, which made her performance stronger, and carried easily over the classical music that had been playing in the room. It wasn't a traditional performance of her selection, with some added in lilts and riffs to make the song even more pleasing to the ear, and maybe to show off a little of her vocal talents...she had no idea what it would mean for her if the woman ended up not liking it.

Vanessa watched the young girl look around the room and her eyes landed on the wall of instruments Vanessa had in her office. The girl pointed to a lute that Vanessa had gotten some time ago and had fixed up to work again after such a long time of misuse and neglect. Nodding her consent for the girl to use the instrument she tested the tune of the strings and seemed to nod in appreciation of Vanessa's choice to keep said instrument tuned.

Staying seated Vanessa watched the girl with a critical eye watching the girl sing. Listening and judging, this was something Vanessa did often normally during the week instead of the weekend. She was always looking for more talent to add to the roster for the Club. Even listening to this bit Vanessa could hear the magic in the girls voice.

As the decision Vanessa was coming to was made Vanessa gave a small playful smile and added her more mature singing voice into the mix, not singing words but adding more accompaniment to the song, following easily the improvised music as if she had head the song a million times before or even created the song herself. All the while using her own magic laced voice as it normally would, seeking those who were lonely or heart broken and pulling them to her. Though the room was sound proof to all that were not inside the room so the only target would be this one girl. As the song ended Vanessa gave a hearty laugh. "Well it seems to be true that you are a Siren. It has been a while since I've seen kin here on the island."

The woman joined her, and Anna almost felt herself being physically pulled in towards her. Was she a siren, too? She finished the song without pause or fault, despite the sensations that the other woman's voice was causing. Their voices together had created a rich duet unlike Anna had ever experienced. Singing with this woman...felt like eating the best cake in the world, with the tones coming out rich and smooth on her tongue like dark chocolate.

Anna politely returned the lute to the wall once the song was over, feeling...proud that she had pleased the other woman with her song. From her words, it was easy to discern that she was a siren, too.

"I'm new to the island," she explained, "and new to...all this. I didn't know I was a siren until a few months ago. Can...can you teach me about it? All I know is what I've read from some old book they had in the library at the academy...I'm attending college there." There was hope in her eyes. Finally, someone who knew more about what she was than she did. Someone who could teach her more.

Vanessa waved a hand dismissing what was written in books. "Old information very out of date. Now adays most of the Sirens just eat seafood. Though man flesh is still tasty every now and again. But I just go to the licenced market for that" Vanessa then got up still with a smile. "Though I haven't heard about waking up one morning and finding out about being a Siren. I myself have been one since I've swam the oceans."

"Though I'm more then willing to help give you a start on learning more about yourself. Though most of that comes from experience. That I can help most thoroughly with that. How would you like to work for me part time as a singer on the weekends? This would allow you to get some money to support yourself and it will allow you to train you voice. I can even tell you what I can about what I can do and our species."

Anna wasn't sure how to feel about the notion of eating flesh, and it being...appealing at all. She also wasn't sure how to feel about knowing that this woman ate it on occasion. She did like seafood, though, so that explained a lot. Sushi was actually kind of a staple in her daily diet.

"It...wasn't really a waking up and suddenly being one, I guess I've been one my whole life, I just...never knew. My parents died when I was twelve. They never told me. It wasn't until I got the letter from the academy that I started asking questions."

At the woman's offer, Anna's eyes widened. "I mean...yeah, that would be great, actually." It would mean that she would have to juggle studies and a job when the semester started up, but she was pretty sure she could handle it. Anna had always been good at school without much extra effort on her part. "Oh. I'm Anna," she added, after realizing she'd never even introduced herself. "Anna Perez."

Vanessa actually looked a little shocked st the news that the girls parents were no longer around. It reminded her of how she had left her school of sirens somewhere in the many isles of the Pacific seas. "That is indeed stormy news. We are certainly a long lived species and it is always a dark tide when we loose any before their true time." Looking at her hand Vanessa placed them in her lap.

Her mood did improve once Anna agreed to work for her and introduced herself. "I am Vanessa Scarlet, owner of Siren's Song Cove. Though during the week it's The Cove and here on the Weekends it's Siren's Song. It's confusing at first im told but you'll get use to it in time." Vanessa stood up and walked over to Anna and gave the girl a brief hug before walking over to the desk, and pulled a flask from one of the drawers with two glasses that most use for whiskey.

Vanessa motioned for Anna to follow her over to some chairs overlooking the well dressed audiance below listening to local music hand picked by Vanessa herself. "If this isn't prying to much, what Isel do you come from my school is roughly around Hawaii before I found myself up here... Though I've been here since before the Academy off and on so I'm not sure if they stuck around." The mature siren poured two glasses of genuine rum, about a shots worth in each glass, before grabbing one for herself and Anna. Trying to hand one to the girl with a friendly smile.
