It had been a long day for Steven, while his first day on the island had been used to explore the academy out of curiosity, his second hadn't been the best in comparison. It had been the first official day of being enrolled and along with that came classes, but more annoying the uniform. While the shirt wasn't too bad, as he was used to wearing the same sort, having to wear a tie was extremely aggravating.

The school day though was finally drawing to a close, his introductory lesson to the school were over and most student were leaving for the day or going to whatever school club they were involved in. Not thinking he would get in trouble for not wearing the uniform after the days end, Steven pulled the tie off and stuffed into his pocket rubbing his neck as if it itched. With the day over, Steven had been tempted to head to the library again and read. However his mind was overloaded. Multiply lesson in things he had no prior knowledge off had some what burned out his normal desire for a book, though he still needed something to do. His dorm only really had books as a past time.

Without the desire to read, Steven fell in to his other habit seeking out some form of creative out let to kill a few hours and relax before heading back to his dorm room. Leading him to end up at the arts building. Walking through the halls, Steven looked into classrooms as he past them, trying to decide what to do. Only to be drawn further down the hallway by the sound of piano keys.

Finding the classroom, that the music was coming from Steven didn't look in right away. Instead who stood by the door for a little while just listening admiring the music. He didn't want to disturb whoever was playing mid performance. He waited until they finished, and before they started on another piece opened the door and step inside. Leaning on the door frame.

"That was transcendent. I wish I was as musically inclined."

Steven said smiling, and clapping lightly in admiration. Pushed back up off the door frame, and moving around the piano in order to get a better look at who had been playing behind the large instrument.

The day had been... trying. Oh, it had started off normal enough, but it had quickly gone downhill. She couldn't even pinpoint what exactly it had been to set her off, but even before noon, she had found herself panicking, constantly watching over her shoulder out of a paranoid fear of her family finding her. Logically, she knew she was as safe as she could be at the Academy, the representative she had talked to had been patient and understanding- she refused to believe it had been pity- in explaining the protections Manta Carlos in general and the Academy specifically had. But still, she'd been unable to shake the impending feeling of doom, of the blade ready to come down on her head.

She'd tried hiding out in her dorm room, even skipping most of her afternoon classes because of it, but that had barely put a dent in the rising hysteria. And so, she had given in to one of the desires she had the moment she'd come to the Academy. She had quietly crept out of the dorm building and to the education buildings, finding the arts one and singling out a music room.

For all that her parents had forced her to start piano lessons in order to learn self-discipline, she had fallen in love with the instrument and with music in general. It was a passion that lived even now, but Cassie hadn't been confident in her new surroundings enough to seek it out. When she played, she put her whole being into it, which was, understandably, a rather vulnerable state. With how frenzied she had been, however, she made an exception. It hadn't proved to be a bad one, either. Her fingers had shaken as she gently ran them along the piano keys, but once she got into a song, and then the second, and third, her fears slowly began melting away. The soft, melodious sounds soothed her in a way very little else could, which was exactly what she needed.

She had just finished her seventh song- a gentle, intricately emotional piece- when a voice interrupted her segue into the eighth. She sprung up from the bench, whirling to face the doorway. Her immediate reaction was to flee, but she was mentally exhausted and not quite up to a chase if the stranger intended to follow her. As such, Cassie remained where she was, watching the boy come into view. Her pupil-less, pale eyes were infinitely careful as they studied the stranger, pale, aristocratically delicate features showing little.

"Thank you." She murmured softly, a hand raising and making a show of tucking a few strands of raven black hair behind her right ear though it was actually readying in case Cassie needed to defend herself. Just from the uniform alone, she could tell this boy was a high school student at the Academy, but physical appearances meant little on islands filled with all sorts of supernatural creatures. "May I ask why you are here? Surely there is a reason you entered, rather than simply walking past once I was finished playing."

Steven couldn't help but bit a little bit shocked as at his compliment, the women behind the piano jumped up from the piano bench and spun to face him, seemingly alarmed. Though she seemed to compose herself quite quickly, so Steven simply assumed that she had been shocked by his sudden arrival, and being engrossed in her performance.

"You're welcome." Steven said politely, smiling at her. "Just a little drain by all oddities of this place, life been odd recently so I haven't really had chance to play at all. Your music put me in the mood to take a stab at a little practise." He explained, walking over to the side of the room, and finding an acrostic guitar that was hanging on the wall.

Turning back to the girl, cradling the guitar in an arm in front of him, he looked over to the door. "I can find another music room if you want, but I don't really know anyone here, so finding another with a love of music is a pleasure." Steven offered, but still made it clear that he would prefer the company.

"I'm Rosett." Steven added, with small nod. Using his surname, was something of a quirk. He like the idea of surpassing his father, at least in terms of morals. He would prefer that the surname be associated more with him, then the business man. A little matter of pride, between father and his disowned son.

Making a solid effort not to lash out as the stranger moved further into the room, Cassie listened to his explanation without interrupting. She settled back onto the bench with graceful movements, though did so in a way that she could easily spring up to her feet once more and flee if needed. And then, he offered to look for another music room, and Cassie sorely wanted to tell him yes, to please leave her alone because she wasn't in the mood to watch her back; she had wanted to relax, damn it, not sour one of the few pastimes she genuinely enjoyed with her self-ingrained paranoia. Another part of her, however, was desperate not to be left alone again. She'd spent a fair portion of her life on the run, keeping away from humans and vampires alike. She was tired of it, tired of being left with the silence of her own mind and the frantic grief-filled flashbacks.

By the time the stranger offered an introduction, that side of Cassie won out, and though she was still fearful of allowing a veritable stranger to see her when she was so vulnerable, it was almost a relief as well. "I do not mind if you remain here." It was only a partial lie. "Though... you may call me Cassie." It burned the side of Cassie that had been groomed since birth to be the aristocratic lady of manners and grace and poise to give the young man such an informal form of her name, but Cassiopeia was not very common these days, and if she could do anything to lessen the tracks she made for her family to follow, the better. With that, she returned the majority of her attention to the piano keys, signaling that the discussion was more or less over, though she kept a sliver of her focus on this... Rosett all the while- old, desperation-born habits die hard, after all.

"A pleasure to meet you Cassie." Steven replied to her own introduction with a small nod, but wasn't completely shocked when she returned her attention to the piano, and picked up on the fact she didn't really want to talk. Steven wasn't going to force it. Instead he calmly walked to a chair on the other side of the room from her and sat down, bringing the guitar to his lap.

Starting to play, making sure to only pluck the strings of the instrument lightly so that they wouldn't throw off Cassie to much in her own music. Steven was in comparison not as gifted, when it came to playing but he had a decent ear. Had Cassie been listening to him. What she would hear was an bad attempt at what she had been playing when he had been at the door.

It was slower, by quite a bit, and the occasional note was off key while others didn't exist due to how a guitar wasn't capable of playing multiple notes at the same time, with a much ease as a piano. He didn't know what the piece even was though, however he never was one to use sheet music or tabs. Instead playing by ear as slowly as he could and building up speed with practise. Something that he wasn't going to be able to do in a single sitting by any means. In fact the more the piece faded in his memory, having only heard it once the more the attempt declined.

"Errr...could I watch you play that last one again?" Steven asked when the was a lull in Cassie performance. Standing up and walking slowly towards her. "I'd hate to miss the chance to learn it." He sounded somewhat nervous as he spoke, he was trying to get to know her using it as an excuse, even though he would have loved to learn it anyway, but could feel she hadn't seem interested before. Plus he wouldn't make any friends here if he played the entire time in silence.

Merely giving a soft hum in acknowledgement, she gazed down at the black and white keys a bit somberly. She hadn't played around someone in ages, and while Cassie knew it wasn't the same as playing for him, having Steven there was odd. Still, she wasn't about to give up- this was her time, for all that she hadn't put up much of a fuss-, and so she took a deep breath before her slender fingers ghosted over the piano keys. Hesitating only a split second, she started on a new song, her eyes fluttering closed as her body moved on memory; getting her hands on a piano to practice had been a rare occurence, but Cassie was just as talented as she remembered being the last time she'd played on the grand piano in the Blackwell's drawing room.

She didn't play as loudly as she would've had she been alone- she might have been a bit standoffish, but she wasn't rude-, which allowed her to hear what Steven was playing. To her surprise, it was the song she'd played before this one. It was... oddly humbling. Not to mention impressive, for she'd only played it the once and still it was fairly decent. So distracted was she, that she finished her current piece absentmindedly- it was a slightly slower piece than the other-, only her near perfect memory as a vampire allowing her to avoid mistakes. As such, she nearly started in surprise when Steven spoke up, wide-eyed once more as she watched him. Her gaze took on a thoughtful edge though, and after a few moments of silence, she nodded, if only slightly hesitantly.

With that, she returned to the piano keys again. There was a barely noticeable tremble in her hands but she fought it back, starting the seventh song once again. It was elegantly simple, a gentle melody that seemed to glide around them, enhanced by the emotion Cassie filled it with. Once she finished and the final ring of the notes disappeared into the air, the straightened in her seat and glanced at Steven.

Steven smiled at Cassie as she nodded in response to his request, and turned back to the piano to start playing, after a moment of silence between the two of them. With that she started to play the song once more, and Steven listened looking over her shoulder down at her hands. Trying to piece together the music in his mind, between listening by ear and seeing which notes on the piano her finger gracefully touched. Nothing really could be said as she preformed and he watched, but Steven wouldn't want to do so even had there been so.

Steven simply listened and watched. The emotional piece striking a 'chord' inside him. Part way through he stopped watching her hand, and let his eyes close softly allowing his ear to do more of the work, and removing the distraction in his mind of multiple stimuli. As the music drew to a close, he found himself wishing that it hadn't. He rarely listened to this kind of music, more modern music being around him as he grew up. However it was a pleasant change.

As the last note drifted away into the air, Steven allowed his eyes to open once more. "Thank you, just as I said before it was beautiful." Steven said bringing up a empty hand and moving to place it on her shoulder, in a way that was somewhat common after someone watched someone on a piano standing behind them like he was. Friendly intentions, but not balanced with insight, having been watching her hand earlier but not noticing the nervousness in them to begin with.

Cassie played at a normal volume this time, her eyes nearly immediately closing as she focused on the feeling of the piano keys beneath her fingers. Swaying slightly as she put her everything into the song, a barely perceptible smile ghosted across her aristocratic features. Time seemed to stop for her, everyone and everything around her fading until all she needed was the music she was creating.

This...

There were no words to describe how utterly free she felt, if only for those precious few minutes. This was why she loved the piano with all of her heart; yes, she was so, so vulnerable while playing, but it lifted her spirits in a way nothing else could. She could, if only for a while, forget all of the pain and loss and suffering that awaited her in her dreams, that dogged her every move and threatened to take away the tentative peace she'd found on Manta Carlos. She could forget that her family was hunting her, that her dearest brother had lost his life because she didn't conform to the Blackwell values.

She was just... Cassie. Not Cassiopeia Blackwell, not even the farce of Cassie Arkwright.

Just. Cassie.

It came to an end all too soon, and wistfully, she wished she could continue playing forever. Unfortunately, that was a fool's thought, and so she mentally shrugged it away, shoring up the resolve to pull her hands away from the piano and turn back to Steven. His compliment brought a light flush to her porcelain skin, the oddly sincere words breaking through the walls that were already somewhat weakened by the soothing notes of mere seconds before. The moment, however, was shattered just as surely as broken glass; Steven's hand, for all that the touch had been innocuous, caused Cassie to flinch violently.

Memories of her father, standing over her, his hand gripping her slender shoulder painfully as her trembling hands played song after song for the exacting man, none of them good enough for him.

She wasn't good enough for him.

With a tortured whimper, Cassie stood in a flash and flung herself into the corner of the room that was as far away from Steven as possible- her mind, however, didn't register the male as Steven, consumed with her memories and nightmares as she was. Smacking into the wall with the momentum of her vampiric speed, she plastered herself against it, trying to make herself appear as small and unassuming as possible, her pale eyes wide and frightful, staring rather unseeingly at Steven with intimidated terror.

The last note in the air, fading as he complemented her skill on the ivory keys was suddenly shattered. As his hand came down on her shoulder, she react with a speed and strengh Steven had in no way been expecting. Taking him completely off-guard her sudden movements causing him to stagger aside. Catching his heel on an uneven patch of floor, Steven went over backwards landing on his behind hard against the floor. A small brief burst of anger flared up inside of Steven, due to the uncalled for action, at least to him. Looking up, drawing in breath to shout his mouth stayed open when he saw her. Clearly terrified, hiding by the wall as if it would bring her safety.

The shout still trying to come out, was quickly pushed down by Steven, calling up ice in both hands were they had braced his fall. Small patches of the floor turning slick, as ice clung to them. While Steven mind cooled as much as the ground did. Killing the frustration, freezing it metaphorically in its tracks. Slowly standing to his feet, Steven calmly brushed of the back of his jeans with his hands, as he let the ice die away from his hands. The coolness though of his attitude had its negatives as well as the positive of stop his outburst. Making him somewhat emotionally dead and unfeeling he didn't understand Cassie's fears in the slightest.

"What is wrong?"

His tone was stoic and calm, an question asked of social expectation rather then caring. However his logically mind in the moment, put together that such a demeanour was unlikely to helpful. So he simply called forth a small flame in one of his hands briefly, enough to push him slightly towards feeling without going to far. While also doubling as an excuse to withdraw a cigarette from one of his pockets and light it. Something to take his mind off his own past. Take his mind off a time he might have looked like her.

"Seriously though...are you okay. I didn't mean to frighten you, I should have been more wary. Please tell me what's wrong maybe I can help." Now Steven voice, sounded more natural. Someone concerned for another out of common human...no he had to correct himself, common sentient decency. Smoking the cigarette, he didn't move closer not wanting to scare the girl more by moving towards her until she reacted.
