There was literally no possible way this wasn't going to be weird. Literally all he knew about her was her name, and the fact that, according to at least two people, she was his daughter-from-another-dimension.

A part of Angelo couldn't help but doubt it. For one, she was a girl. For another, her name wasn't Angela. He was pretty sure that if he was a girl, his dad would have picked a different name then Jasmine. It was very... non-Italian.

Was she even Italian?

There were a lot of questions, and Angelo was trying to take it slow as he grab a spot by the fountain, his hands in his lap as he waited for her to show up.

This absolutely was the weirdest thing to happen to Jazz. The zombies had been distressing. Finding Saturday, a literal Mothman, in the woods had been freaky. All the nonsense with portals and goat cults and what have you... yeah.

None of that held a candle to 'there's a you already here, and he's a guy.' Getting a text message from him had been freaky. How had he learned her number? Wait, she reminded herself to think logically. She had put her number on the fliers all over town. If he knew what he was looking for, it stood to reason that he could have pieced together that it was her number.

She didn't have to look too long for him at the fountains. Blonde hair and blue eyes made her breath hitch. But the robotic arm and all the metal on his face made her exhale audibly. She reminded herself to keep her cool and pressed forward, pulling the old jacket her dad had given her tight over her school uniform. Uniforms were weird. Skirts were weird. Everything was weird.

"So, uh. Text messages, huh? We didn't, uh. Really have that back home." Idiot. That was all she could think to say? Really? Jazz kicked herself and started again. "You're... Angelo? I'm Jazz. Uh. Jasmine."

Angelo stood up when he saw her. There was no denying it - there was a strong similarity. Like, if no one had pointed it out, it might not have jumped out, but now that it was pointed out...

Well, hard not to notice the similarities.

"Jasmine Kennedy?" He said, offering his hand for a shake. "I didn't hear much about the world you came from, honestly. I just got a bunch of texts telling me there was another version of me and they were a girl. Not entirely sure what made them draw the conclusion, but... there's at least some similarity for sure."

The hair. The eyes. She was a bit shorter, maybe a bit younger.

"So, uh, I'm Angelo Genovese. The younger one. The one from Halcyon City, which is also another dimension from here. There's another Angelo Genovese, who's older - late twenties - who's the one from here."

Jazz smiled and gave a small wave of greeting before putting her hands back in her pockets.

Already there was a lot to unpack there. Somehow even more than being in an alternate universe to begin with. "Yeah, I uh. I wasn't too sure when they first started telling me about you. Or rather, about the older you. Us? Whatever."

"Seemed a little far fetched. I kinda was more inclined to believe them when they said your name though. Angelo. My middle name is Angela. After my grandma. On Dad's side." Wait no. He didn't need to know that. "This is so freaky..."

"So, what's the deal now? I mean, do we compare notes? See if Kon and those others are just full of hot air? They said you were a superhero or something. Which is, I dunno. Wild."

Angelo was very much on the compare notes train. Check against each other. See how likely it was. Her middle name was Angela, but... okay, that was a solid point in her favor...

"Skill testing, Angelo detecting questions, then. Are you Italian? Or, uh, German I guess. But mostly Italian. Did you ever get burnt on your left side? Do you have a strong preference for law-and-order based professions? Is your father scary beyond all reason?"

What other similarities did he and big Angelo have? A lot of little things, honestly. But it wasn't like there were any hard and fast rules. His father seemed to be two separate people to the other Angelo, after all.

Jazz snorted at the to the point nature of Angelo's questions. She shook her head and went through them one by one.

"Let's see. I'm honestly not sure about heritage. Mom met Dad up in New York. He was just a patrol officer then. They moved back to Raven's Grove and got married. Um."

She glanced at the left side of his face and grimaced a bit. "I've gotten burns before. Mostly doing Boy Scout stuff. Nothing, uh, notable or serious though."

"I definitely was gunning for first female President when I was younger. Guess that's out the window now, but uh. That's a yes, I think? And Dad, well. He's the sheriff. Kind of obligatory to be kinda scary in that profession. He's nice enough though. Understanding after the zombie stuff happened back home."

She couldn't think of any questions to ask back immediately. As far as she was concerned, she was average. Nothing really noteworthy about her that might ping as something an alternate version of her might have.

Her dad was a patrol officer? In New York? Angelo didn't bother trying to hide his obvious reaction to each new bit of information. There was a lot to unpack. She thought about politics. He thought about politics. Her dad was a cop. Angelo was...

Actually, that was a whole question. Was she the Angelo, or was her dad?

He pulled out his phone, flicking through photos quickly before holding it up, showing a group shot of him, his father, and Sergeant Genovese.

"I'm from Halcyon City, which is sort of like New York. Superhero dimension stuff. Se- you know what, I'm going to just call him 'Big Angelo' because it's easier. Either way, Big Angelo's from New York City originally, but he had powers so he got moved here. He was in the mafia there--raised in a mafia family--and then became a cop when he moved here. So I'm not sure if you're the Angelo, because you're more like me-"

Angelo's brain screeched to a halt.

"Oh god, are you actually a boy scout?"

He could hear Broen's hysterical laughter already.

"Oh my god. He looks almost exactly like my dad. But with longer hair and no beard. And-" Jazz squinted hard, "way more muscular. Like holy moly, what did they feed him in the mafia?"

The mafia. Superheroes. Powers. This was all starting to sound like a crazy story someone would have written in Freshman English. It was all over the place. Messy. But that was how life was, wasn't it?

"Eagle Scout, actually. Since I was thirteen." Jazz beamed proudly, showing her teeth when she smiled. "Dad fought tooth and nail to get them to let me join. Since they were the only scout troop nearby and honestly the Girl Scouts Gold Award isn't nearly as prestigious."

For a moment, Angelo was really, really happy he'd asked all those questions to officer Genovese.

"He was... I don't know. Some kind of half-reaper. Like, grim reaper. He's not anymore, but that helped him get buff apparently." How that worked, Angelo had no idea, but he was right there with her calling bullshit.

"Okay, so," he said after a long second, rolling it over in his head. Was this like his dad? Yeah, probably.

"My dad is Basilio. You'd think that Big Angelo would have a dad like him, only he doesn't. Instead, Basilio is like two people for him - the Don, and his biological father. I think this is kind of the same way. You have a lot in common with me, while your dad has a lot in common with Big Angelo. So it's not a one-to-one thing."

She was like... a halfgelo.

A girl halfgelo.

Surprisingly, this wasn't quite as weird as he thought. Mostly because of the dad thing. If she'd been just a girl version of him, raised by a Basilio, then... well, that would have been strange.

Or if she'd been a girl version of him raised by his mother. That would have... that would have been a thing.

"I'm going to ask Big Angelo if your last name has any significance to him," he said after a moment. "Sorry, can I ask you like... a really personal question?" He looked serious there, the question weighing heavily on his head. "What happened to your mom?"

Yup. That sure was a question alright. The corner of Jazz's mouth twitched up into a kind of sad smile before she shrugged. If he was asking, she could maybe guess why. Superheroes had tragic back stories, didn't they?

"Pneumonia. Back before I was old enough to really know her. Dad took it hard, kinda made him double down further into work."

"I guess that makes sense though. Traits get split along people, possibly so there's no direct match up where someone could replace someone else cleanly. Some kind of multiversal failsafe, maybe?"

Complete ass-pull, that explanation was. All she knew about portals and other universes was what she'd read in books while researching the Enigmas' investigations.
