Amber felt her phone buzz and used her free hand to pull it out from her pocket to see who it was that texted her. The color on Amber's drained away it a message from her mom's phone number asking her where she was. But... she is holding her mom's hand right now, but if the person next to her isn't her mom then...

Amber shot a look to her mom... no the person wearing her mom's face with all six of her eyes in silent horror at the realization of the situation she was now in. The imposer mom must have realized the jig was up they let go of her hand. Amber was quick to pull her hand back to her side as she takes a few steps back away as the doppelganger explains everything. Everything how she was the part cut off in hell, how they shared the same memories, how she thought of her as her own daughter. Everything that her mom warned of... and more terrifyingly of the things she was not warned of.

Now that they stood until the illumination of street lamp, Amber could see the violet in the imposter's eyes that all but confirmed that this woman was not her mom. The resemblance was uncanny but she was still ashamed of herself for being bamboozled so thoroughly. But... what was this imposter's intentions? Was she going to kidnap her for herself? Did she want to murder and take her mom's place? As these questions arose and a forlorn fear clouded her mind, Amber took a few more steps back from the false mother. There was only one thing on her mind: Run.

Without saying a word, Amber turned tail and ran down the path forest path as fast as her many legs can take her. She had to get away, she didn't know what this woman was going with her but she didn't want to hang around to find out. As Amber ran, she would listen for the sound of cloven hooves chasing after her and could only pray that she wasn't being pursued.

Uzza saw the fear in Amber's eyes. It felt worse than she could have imagined, watching her flee. Terrified of her. "Amber! Wait! I just want..." To talk. To see her again. To make sure she was safe with the other Chloe. Uzza choked on her words, holding back a sob. She was trembling.

She had to fix this.

A flutter of wings. Amber wouldn't see her mother's doppelganger behind her anymore. She might not notice the bird flying ahead of her. But, farther down the path, she would hear the other Chloe's voice again.

"I just wanted to talk!" she said. She was desperate, tears welling up in her eyes as she stepped out of the shadows onto the path ahead of Amber. Her horns were uneven this time, and her ears were pointed and more prominent. "I wanted to make sure you're safe with her. I-I-I won't lay a finger on you."

Amber ran and ran, everything but the path ahead was a blur int he darkness. Just when she was beginning to think she had outran her, the fake Chloe suddenly appeared in front and Amber skidded to a stop. As the impostor cried out, Amber felt a pang in her heart. It hurt her to here her mom's voice breaking into tears but how could she be sure this was not some ploy to lull her into sympathizing with her?

"No! No just... j-just go away!" shrieked Amber, whom looked to the dark underbrush and bolted into the cover of darkness. She had no idea where in the hells she was going now but anywhere was better than where she was just standing. But the deeper went, the more lost and turned around she became until she lost all sense of direction.

Now hopelessly lost, Amber she had to fight the urge to scream for help. After all, who knows if she was still out there looking for her? Amber had no interest in talking with... with whoever that was. She just wanted to go home. She wanted to go back to her mom and hug her and tell her how much she loved her and... and that was just what the fake Chloe wanted too.

As this new thought crossed her mind, Amber's fear was replaced by wretched guilt for running away. Though this person wasn't her mom... still part of her was her mom... right? Just like how Anastasia was a part of Dalia... this person was just a part of her mom too. They were still Chloe in sense and maybe if they had just not... well she just ruined that chance by running off like a coward now huh.

"M-mom I am so sssorry... I-I'm... I'm so sorry. I... I just... I just want to g-go home..." sobbed Amber, believing herself alone in the darkness.

Amber ran away again. She was going to keep running away every time she tried to reveal herself, Uzza realized. Her own daughter, her only child was terrified of her. This would have made Uzza break down and start crying, to question if she should keep living at all, if not for one thing:

Amber had run off the path. She could get lost, and who knew what kind of monsters and freaks might be hiding out there? Even if Amber hated her now, Uzza couldn't bear the idea of Amber getting hurt.

So, first, she hesitated. She took a shaky breath, wiping the hot tears from her eyes. Then, she transformed and began to pursue Amber one more time. She would have time to cry later.

****** ****** ******

"Hey kid," A new voice would interrupt Amber's sobbing. It was small, gentle - if Amber looked just to her side, she would see a fox looking up and talking to her. "Are you okay?"

Non-humanoid animals didn't cry. For this, Uzza was grateful. Still, Amber might pick up on her sadness in her fox form: her ears back and drooping, her tail between her legs. She probably sounded kind of sad, too.

Amber shot her head up, able to make out a talking fox that seemed to have suddenly appeared. Not the most strangest thing in the world but it was a relief that she wasn't alone now. No doubt it was drawn by her crying but much to her relief it wasn't the fake Chloe. Yet... part of her was disappointment that it wasn't her.

"N-no... I... I don't know. I'm lost and I was running away from someone that maybe I shouldn't have-" her mind felt foggy, trying to piece together everything that happened and whether she made the right decision to run away or not "I... do you know the way out of here? I... I just want to go home."

Amber then brushes the lingering tears from her eyes, finding some comfort with the fox whom's sudden appearance she did not question.

Maybe she shouldn't have? Shouldn't have what - run away? Uzza's fox ears perked up with hope, but she wasn't going to drop her cover and risk Amber running away again.

"I know the way to the city. It's that way." She turned her head more or less in the direction of the high rise where Amber lived. "I can walk you there, if you'd like. Just to be safe. I know it can be scary out here by yourself, if you aren't used to it."

Uzza knew this from experience, actually. It had taken her almost a week to go to Grovefire, after she'd fled from Chloe's realm, and Jackal's apartment. She'd spent much of that week in the forest. It didn't help that she was having a crisis through most of that.

"T-thanks...I really appreciate it." perked up Amber as she follows closely behind the talking fox. While on any other night Amber would been squealing with delight to be following a fox, right now she was to nervous. Nervous of what might jump out of the shadows but at least she wasn't alone.

"... so... I am sort of used to small animals running away from me but I am glad you didn't. It... a horrible feeling when some cute is so afraid of you that the run off...." like how she just ran away from the imposter Chloe. Though she in her head tried to justify her action, in her heart there was still that pang of guilt. After letting out a sigh continued to speak "... my name is Amber by the why. Do you have a name little fox?"

"It's really no problem." Uzza kept guiding her in the right direction. Even when the terrain got a little difficult with a few rocks and steep inclines, it was not a problem. Uzza's fox form was nimble, and Amber could climb up sheer surfaces.

She didn't say anything about the feeling Amber was talking about. She could relate, though. Perhaps that was part of why it was on Amber's mind. She almost revealed herself then and there - but not yet. She thought they might find the path through the woods soon, and then if Amber really wanted to run away again, she could run towards home without getting lost. Just a little bit longer...

Amber asked for her name - and for Amber's sake, she had to dodge that question. "I... have a true name, but it would be dangerous for me to say it aloud. It could give people power over me, you understand." She paused to climb up and over a rock, nervous. "I have other names that I made up and chose for myself... oh, uh, before you get worried about that, I'm not a fae or anything, so it was safe to thank me."

Uzza picked up the pace ever so slightly. She didn't want to have to double down on this lie. The sooner Amber could find her own way home, the sooner she could give this one last try.

"Oh... I understand then. True names old power over some. Mind if I call you Foxy then?" Giggled Amber, matching the lace of her new fox friend. But... if Foxy had a true name then wouldn't them a shifter nor sapient animal. And if they were not a fea then...

"... what exactly are you then Foxy?" Inquired Amber as her suspicion arose.

Uzza didn't answer immediately. She didn't know what to say to that. She didn't want to lie to her daughter anymore. But now the path was visible up ahead.

"I just wanted to make sure you were safe." Her fox-ears drooped back again, tail between her legs. "So... here's the path we were on earlier. If you keep following that you'll get home just fine."

She stopped, then moved around Amber, so that she wasn't between Amber and the way home. Then, she sat down. "And... I won't follow you again or talk to you if you don't want me to." With a blur and what felt like a swirling gust of wind, she looked like Chloe again. More precisely, she looked like if Chloe had pointy ears and teeth and had pulled an all-nighter while recovering from the flu.

"I..."

She was having trouble getting the words out. She couldn't decide between "I love you," or "I'm sorry," or if it was even a good idea to say anything. All she had decided on is that she didn't want to cry, and she probably wasn't even going to pull that off at this rate. She should have just kept being a fox.
