A Meeting with Sir

Edward was in such a wonderful mood today.

She didn't often get a chance to be around horses. Or animals of any sort, for that matter... And she liked horses, she did, even if they were big and sort of scary sometimes.

She practically skipped towards the stables, ducking into the tack room just long enough to grab the box of brushes and muscle a saddle and reins down from the highest shelf. She ran back out to the pasture, climbing the fence and neighing as loud as she could. A large blue roan separated from the pack, ambling over to where she was sitting. "Sir!" She clapped her hands together in delight, tossing the saddle over the fence beside her and digging around in the box for a currycomb. "So? How are you?" She asked, nickering softly as an afterthought.

"Aw, isn't that sweet... The little girl talking to the the horse. Tcha!" Everto's voice was filled with scarcasm and cruelty. He wasn't in a spectacular mood, even for him. It was a bright, sunny day, and too much sunlight tended to get on his nerves. Why was he there, anyway? He didn't like animals, he didn't like nature, he really didn't like sunlight... Actually, there was nothing about the area around him that he liked. So why on earth was he there? Stepping forward, Everto leant on the fence. Whinnying, the horses moved away from where he stood, trotting to the other side of the pasture. "Annoying critters." He muttered to himself as he watched them depart.

Turning his cold, cynical gaze back to the girl, Everto spoke once more, his voice soft with malice. "Well? Are you going to tell me your name or am I going to have to force it out of you?" He examined his fingernails for a moment before turning his grey eyes back to the girl. "Well?" Everto was not one who liked to be ignored, and nor was he used to it. He had an impatient air of cruelty around him, and a scathing voice that would surely earn him a reputation with the younger students. And if word of what he had done last time he was at the Academy got out, that would only add to his atmosphere of fear. Not that Everto cared. He had long ago given up caring.

Edward tilted around to look at him, dangerously close to falling off the fence. "Hello, Sir." She turned back to the horse, whispering "not you" in his ear.

"I can't tell if you're being mean or not." She announced, going back to her currycombing. "Doesn't matter anyway." She frowned up at the sky, stealing a shadow from a tree to cover her in murky darkness. How did it get sunny so fast?

He spoke again, this time asking her name. She stretched the shadow until she couldn't see the sky, flashing him a confused look when she was finished. "You are sending conflicting signals. Your tone of voice is mean, but you want to hear my name... Sir, I'm really not good at interpreting that sort of thing."

A long pause. "It's Edward, anyway. If you really want to know."

"Well now, aren't you a clever puppet then? Shall I make myself clear for you? Here you are then: the knowledge of a name makes it much easier to speak with a person. Then, instead of simply saying 'you', all the time, one may throw the name around instead. Are you stupid?" Though the question wasn't really his style, Everto was in too bad a mood to really care. Of course, the girl could simply be acting stupid in an attempt to fool him, or she could actually be that thick. Either way, Everto could, no doubt, outmatch her with words any time.

Scowling, Everto wondered why on earth she kept calling him 'Sir'. Obviously she had never heard of him. Well, he would no doubt rectify that. Still glaring at her, angry at her total lack of, well, anything emotional really, he watched her. Simply watched. It wasn't that he didn't have anything to say, he did, oh yes, he certainly did, but he simply wanted to wait for the right moment.

She watched him as he babbled on, propping her chin up on her hand. "I'm not stupid. It just doesn't make sense. You're in a horrible mood, you don't like horses and probably not me, so why not go sulk by yourself instead of submerging yourself in an environment in which you'll no doubt be terribly unhappy?" She shrugged, turning back to the horse. "Isn't that a perfectly rational line of thought?"

...And now he was watching her. Why did he need to know her name if all he was going to do was stare at her? She glanced up at him, black eyes sweeping over him before she shrugged. "So where's this conversation you needed to know my name for?" She shook her head, picking up the hoof pick and jumping off the fence into the corral. He still hadn't even said her name - it didn't make any sense. Ah well. When people got upset, they didn't really care what they complained about, as long as it was the other person's fault. Besides, it was easy to ignore his scowl of utter contempt.
