Chloe was a very long way from home.

Less than an hour ago, she was getting dressed for school. Strictly speaking, she was in a school now; or at least a building that resembled a school, but it certainly wasn’t her school. The drunk boy who claimed to have summoned her here, Loch, called it “a school for fuckups.” According to him, someone called “Aurora” might be able to help her get home. She was a teacher, or something like that. He had written a room number on Chloe’s palm before passing out next to the “summoning circle” he made, slurring that Aurora would probably be either in her office or at the music room.

The room was in the administration wing. It was a small miracle that Chloe managed to calm down enough to find it. Now she knew where to get the assistance she needed.

But there was one tiny problem: it was a few hours after midnight, and Aurora was not in her office. Chloe didn’t know what she expected. Of course she wouldn’t be in her office this late at night, but Chloe was also terrified, and probably thousands of miles away from home. Aurora’s failure to be in her office at 2-3AM was incredibly distressing to the demon-girl.

She still had the book that Loch used. It could all be bullshit, a stupid book full of stupid fake magic spells, or it could be important, if Loch was telling the truth about magic. Right now the book was sitting by her feet, open to the page she suspected Loch was working out of. Chloe herself was curled up into a ball right next to Aurora’s office, panicking.

Aurora didn't often stay particularly late at school, but in some specific instances, she would get this urge to be productive, or even just stay to read in the library. Occasionally the reason to do this sort of thing would be completely spontaneous. On other nights such as this one, there was a reason for it, even if the mage couldn't immediately identify it.

So, at roughly 2am, she had gone to make coffee, as her office was fresh out, no doubt to students likely helping themselves to her stash while she was teaching classes or whatnot. Not that it was a huge deal, but the situation occasionally presented itself as an inconvenience when its caffeinated effects became truly desirable.

Also unfortunately, when she had gone to get coffee, she had left behind her apparent reason for staying at the school in the first place; a girl outside the director's door, quite obviously distraught...and with some sort of large book sitting open next to her.

"Can I help you?"

The question was actually rhetorical. There quite obviously a reason someone was sitting outside her door.

"Actually, come on, it's more comfortable inside, certainly more so than the floor."

Aurora walked past the lady, and opened the door for her, smiling lightly and nodding her way inward, inviting the girl in. She hadn't been lying, the room was far more comfortable, and at least several degrees warmer. The mage removed her first layer of robes and hung them up; and set her coffee on her desk.

"Go ahead and pick a seat. I took tomorrow off so I could talk to you tonight."

Aurora stretched lightly.

"Can I get you anything? Besides coffee that is? Everyone else seems to take mine."

Chloe didn’t know what to say. This wasn’t the reaction she was expecting from… whoever Aurora was supposed to be. Aurora wasn’t even a little surprised. Chloe was becoming suspicious again; she was trying to think of how this could all be an elaborate trick. Or maybe this was a dream, and her mind was being inconsistent.

With some hesitation, she followed the robed woman inside and sat down, as she was told. She was sure to bring the book with her, and to keep it open to the same page it had been on.

“You’re Aurora,” Chloe said, looking to the robed woman for some sort of confirmation, if not a correction.

“Okay. One of the students here says he… summoned me? Using this book?” Chloe set the book carefully on Aurora’s desk. It was full of handwritten Latin and diagrams of things which Chloe imagined might be summoning circles, or something like that. “Is that… a real thing that can happen? I –“

Chloe’s stomach grumbled loudly enough for both of them to hear, interrupting her. She gave Aurora an apologetic glance. “I haven’t had breakfast yet. I woke up about an hour ago. For school.” That last part might have been obvious – Chloe was dressed in a school’s uniform, but not this school’s. “Could I have something to eat?”

"That's right. Although I'm afraid I haven't had the same pleasure of knowing your name."

The conversation quickly turned to the book that the lady had been carrying around, and before Aurora could pick up her coffee again and listen to her name, a book was placed onto her desk. The page it was open to was immediately intriguing. Aurora reached for her glasses and set them on her face and started running her finger across the pages, mouthing words to herself.

"A summoning? Yes, there's a couple of summoners here, but I've never heard of anyone summoning a metahuman. Usually it's spirits or non-sentient creatures...and you say a student did this?"

That was disturbing. Students summoning sentient humans from another universe was dangerous. Heck, summoning anything at all could be dangerous. But such was the nature of living around a magical school of sorts.

"These look like a hermetic summoning formula alright...where did you get this?"

And once again, before the lady in front could answer, they were both interrupted by the sound of grumbling stomachs. Aurora chucked at the notion, she was pretty hungry too.

"I can imagine. It looks like you dressed up for the wrong school. You don't mind fish or something do you? I had thawed my dinner out, but I doubt I could eat it myself. It'll just take a minute or two to cook. Why don't you tell me about yourself in the meantime?"

“I’m Chloe.” The conversation moved past introductions.

According to Aurora, it was normal for people to summon things here, but not… meta-humans? Chloe was going to start using that – it was a lot better than the other things her kind had been called.

“I can… live with fish.” She wasn’t a big fan of seafood, but she wouldn’t complain. “Alright. So, the guy who summoned me had the book. I don’t know where he got it. But… he was pretty sure I was a succubus.” She paused, suddenly a little confused. “What makes you think I’m not a demon, though? Because he was pretty sure he was using a demon-summoning… thing.”

Of course, he was also drunk at the time. Chloe didn’t know how long she could get away with not mentioning that.

A succubus summoning huh? It almost sounded like this wasn't at all malicious, but instead a pretty terrible mistake by a student who was way in over his head. A shame really, it's quite probable that he had screwed up the summoning in more ways than one. Why the practice wasn't banned, or at least strictly enforced was frankly beyond reasonable comprehension.

Aurora whipped open her small fridge, taking out a piece of orange fish, likely sockeye salmon, and started to season it with a mix of salt and pepper. Turning on her small kitchenette, the smell of olive oil, and the sound of sizzling went into the air.

"I don't know you're not a demon. Metahuman is just kind of a catch-all for those that have the a general human-like appearance. Elves, dwarves, or beings such as yourself. They're pretty common here, and they're pretty human as far as the supernatural go. It sounds as though whoever summoned you made a huge mistake though...I'm surprised you weren't killed to be honest."

Summonings could be quite violent if done improperly. This one sounds like it had been done properly...but with the wrong target. A very wrong target.

“Elves… and dwarves.” Chloe repeated slowly. “Like from Tolkien. Okay. I was hoping for you to say something more like ‘I know you’re not a demon because demons aren’t a thing, you simple child.’ But for the record, I’m… uh, pretty sure I’m not a literal demon from hell.”

Chloe had already done this once. The thing where she learned that everything she knew about reality was wrong, and there was an entire world beyond what the normals knew. She had already done that, already rearranged her entire worldview to accommodate what she learned. Once was more than enough. She didn’t need this again.

But hey, at least the concept of summoning wasn’t foreign to her. The idea of using a book to do something supernatural, that part was new, but teleportation and summoning was old news.

“… I guess you could say I came from figurative hell.” She continued with a bitter chuckle. “You’ve heard about what’s been going on in America, right? With the… meta-humans there, I guess.”

Aurora would have to have heard about that, unless they hadn’t been living on the same planet for the last few months. Or if Aurora didn’t pay attention to the news. Either way.

"A little strange I know. I don't think I've met a literal demon from hell, but I have met a fair few demons here. Most are reasonable people."

Except the ones that wanted to summon things, vaporize other things, and manipulate yet others. Honestly, excepting the whole horns and magical powers part...they were quite human in nature in that respect. A scary prospect, no doubt.

Having already flipped over the fish to give it a nice crust, Aurora cut the salmon in half, and plated it for two, adding a few greens just to round out the meal.

"Here, I'm not the best cook, but it should keep you from starving until you find something more to your palette."

Aurora handed over the plate, and then went to sit back down at her desk to start eating. The fish actually wasn't too bad considering that she didn't exactly have much to cook with in her office.

"Figurative? I'm afraid I haven't heard much from the mainland in a couple of months, bad, good or otherwise. Is something going on that we should be aware of?"

Chloe accepted the fish uneasily. She didn’t like salmon, but she disliked hunger more. “Thanks.”

Aurora clearly didn’t read the news much. “Basically… you know how, a year ago, all the normals found out that metahumans with superpowers are a thing?” This was a rhetorical question. Literally everyone who lived on the same planet as Chloe should know about that by now. Chloe kept talking before Aurora could cut in: “Well, the American government still thinks we’re all terrorists, and most of the public still thinks we should all be dead. People are just acting on those ideas more. That’s the only new thing.”

The demon-girl was about to start eating her fish, but she soon realized that she didn’t have any utensils to eat it with. “Have a spare fork?”

"Sorry. I would have offered sweets or something, but, students."

Problem students. The reason for just about anything disappearing from her office while she wasn't looking. Nobody could get into her office without her being there, but while Aurora wasn't looking, the sweets on her desk often disappeared. Not maliciously of course; those sweets were actually quite delicious.

"I don't know about that actually. I'm pretty sure most sleepers are still unaware of supernaturals. Those that do know us are still pretty distrustful though."

Aurora lifted an eyebrow and busted out a couple of other books, and started to look through the summoning formula again, suspecting something funny was going on. She only got one page in however before grabbing Chloe a fork from a nearby drawer.

"Can you tell me a little more about where you come from? And....if you would submit to a couple of tests?"
