A little out of place

Corbin silently chuckled to himself and the amusement showed in his eyes. er story was quite fascinating. Living a thousand years with a father figure who traveled. His fascination was piqued at the mention of her father visiting sometime soon and wondered if he could get the chance to meet him.

Turning to Tamara, he signed at her quickly,

"Changing faces? Different names?" he repeats, "Are you and your father secret services?"

(("Oh Grandma, you have the best stories!" -little corbin says as he bites into his cookie))

Tamara made a sign for laughter, showing of her amusement at the thought of her father and herself being secret service agents. It was an amusing thought because at one point in her extended lifetime, she was in fact an agent to Queen Victoria.

She followed with signing:

"In a world where people find magic strange, we tend to be considered as monsters. We both try to blend in by changing out personas every now and then. Since our immortality spells differ we try to make what we can of it."

She paused a moment to let Corbin absorb that idea. People seem to not understand that there were different forms of immortality so she lets people take the time to understand that.

"I live only as a spirit, whereas Father lives on with an immortal body. He needs to change names since he looks exactly the same. But my time is limited by how long my body could last, so I literally change faces."

There was no point in lying to Corbin, was it? She might as well clue him in that this face is not acually 'Tamara', but a girl that already passed away.

[[ did i say granny, i meant like... great great great great great grandmother. or probably even his ancestor xD ]]

Corbin let her words sink in and he looked up at the ceiling, his fingers idly twiddling atop the opposite hand's palm. He mostly understood how her father's immortality spell worked. An immortal body, and has to go around now and then so as not to blow his cover. A brief thought of those vampires in Twilight crossed his mind and he wondered if they ever traveled to protect their identity. With a mental slap delivered to himself, he continued on his original train of thought.

An immortal body versus an immortal soul. The former would mean that the body will never age as where the latter, the soul will never do. Or in this case, it never dies. However, the body is a different part of the being.

Finally coming to at least some form of conclusion, Corbin turns to Tamara and asks his questions.

"Two questions," he begins then pauses, unsure on how to continue without accidentally offending the other. "First question, where do you get your bodies? Second question, where do you get your bodies?"

((He actually was supposed to ask two questions but I forgot what the other one was while I was typing so--))

[[ i'm just going to imagine corbin gave a different inflection to his second question xD like, first one he's just asking where does she get her body, and the second is where ]]

Tamara seemed to stare off into space for a second, her hands rested, unmoving on her lap before she actually finally responded. She looked at Corbin with blank eyes.

"From the hopeless."

She signed simply. She paused, letting her arms hang in the air for a moment. It was a difficult to explain for Tamara, but then she did need to make it clear, or else Corbin might get the wrong idea. She hated that.

"By that, I meant like... people who've given up living, or have no chance to do so. I always know them personally and they were at least very good friends to me, and believe me, I never force them to do this. But as reluctant as I was, I'm just as scared to disappear."

As she continued to sign, there seemed to be a sad air around her as she did.

The hopeless, she says. Like him?, he thinks.

Corbin wonders about just ceasing to exist. He's tried it before, to save others, but he was always such a coward. He could have never pulled the trigger. That was why he just ran, so he didn't have to face any of the responsibilities he knew he had to face back then but never did. The families of the lives he just took away.

He took his time replying, eventually signing: "I might know how you feel."

But he doesn't. He doesn't really. Because he had always been the hopeless one. Never his friends. Never his family. They wanted to live. They were the ones with the spirit to live on and storm through whatever problem they might have been facing. He had no right taking that from them.

A small, sad chuckle left his mouth. Though it was muffled by the scarf, it was clear that it was soft and raspy as it hasn't been used in a while. Just as soon as it left his mouth, he closed it back up. Shame overpowering his features. This was his punishment. He shouldn't speak. Not ever. For everyone's sake, including his.

((Jumping in the sad and somber wagon.))

This time, after a very long while, there was movement under tape that covered Tamara's mouth. She knew the boy would not be able to see it, but there was a smile, albeit very small, just a little curve at the end of the lip, barely noticeable underneath the cover. Not even Tamara noticed. But her smile wasn't happy, it was sad, and somewhat pained.

Moments after Corbin's response, Tamara lifted her arms from her lap again and signed:

"I would not want to assume and I'm sure I don't know what you've been through, but I doubt anyone could ever really know exactly. So there is no need to console."

She made a brief pause. Of course she didn't know much about Corbin. He didn't know his story before he came here, nor does she even know how he thought like. It made her wonder what he had been through.

"Do you feel like talking about it, or no?"

Corbin hung his head, knowing that she was right. No one could ever know exactly. Everyone's problems were their own and that there was no way that another person could fully understand the depth of the situation without living it themselves.

He shook his head sullenly. He didn't want to talk, he wasn't sure if he'd be able to stop himself from getting too invested in a story he was still too afraid to tell. He'd really rather just forget about everything that's happened but also knew that wasn't a choice for him to take. He can't forget.

"Thanks anyway," he signs, genuinely grateful that Tamara had wanted to talk. But he doubted that it was something he was going to share to anybody anytime soon.

Tamara's shoulders heaved up then down or for a sigh. She figured she might have touched a sensitive topic. Unlike most, she would have been open about her past to just about everyone who could handle the truth of the world and accept people better. But there were only but a few who could be that way. Once people know about her dark past, no one could tell how they would see her then after. But of course, Father was an exception to most of those people.

The parasite lifted her arms once more to sign,

"If you need anyone to speak with, I'm open to hear it out. I frequent the library more if you do."

A momentary pause.

"On the other hand, would you like to return to your classes soon? Seeing as you are in fact quite well, after all. Or would you rather we take you back to your dorms?"

Corbin nodded to let her know that he understood. Maybe he can go and visit to talk about other things. It doesn't have to be about him. He felt rather guilty considering that Tamara had shared more than what he had expected her to at first, but he still wasn't all that comfortable with talking about his own story. Besides, he didn't know whether or not their paths would cross again after this. He might or might not take her up on that offer after all.

Seeing as she asked him about going back, he shrugged. He wasn't really up to going to class now that he's spend half of the time here. He could probably just head to his classes later in the afternoon.

Trying to lighten the mood, he signed at her with a cheeky look in his eyes.

"I'm feeling rather faint all of a sudden. It must have been the fumes. It might be best if I stayed."

Tamara crinkled her eyes as she found the look of mischief in Corbin's eyes. A part of her could just reprimand him for asking to stay when he looked — no, when he was, in fact, perfectly fine. But then, it was nice that she could have company for the while too. She was either shelving by her lonesome in the library, or filing in the infirmary. Either way, she was all alone with no one to talk to.

Nodding slightly, she signed:

"I suppose it's best that you should, then."

Tamara was sure he wasn't really feeling unwell but there really was no harm in letting him stay, was there?
