A little out of place

Corbin sighed as he watched a few of his class mates walk out the door, glancing worriedly back at him once or twice. He pulled his knees to his chest and leaned back on the wall behind him. A little coughing and everybody had come to his aid and forcing him to the infirmary when he wasn't really sick. This happened far too often for Corbin's liking.

A side glance at a small mirror hanging by the wall closest to him, he could see why people always thought he was going to die. Sunken eyes staring back at him and pale skin that probably called out to people like a beacon. A small part of him wanted to rip the scarf he had around his shoulders and speak. There wouldn't truly be any harm in it, just carefully thought out words that would leave this image in the dust. He knew he couldn't though. Corbin knew that the only thing that kept him from using and quite probably abusing his power is his own will. If he wavered even for a moment, there was nothing that could hold him back.

Closing his eyes in resignation, he decided to take a nap. They were going to stop him from leaving as soon as he stepped out of the door so it was best if he just used this time to his advantage. He curled around on the bed and upon lying down, stretched his body to ease his brittle bones for a decidedly more relaxing rest. He didn't take into account that he was just a tad bit taller than the height the bed was initially for and his foot snagged unto something by the foot of it. He unconsciously tugged at it to set it free and it was only a second later he realized that was a bad idea. The rack that held a few vials with oddly colored mixtures came flying. The vials smashed to the ground, one by one, as though mocking him. His eyes widened in alarm.

He turned to the door, just about ready to face punishment but no one came. Two choices came to mind. One, he could run. Two, he could stay, clean up the mess, and feign innocence.

It was an easy choice. After all, he just couldn't leave it here for someone else to clean or be blamed for. Corbin got of the bed, careful not to step on a piece of glass, and walked around the room trying to find a broom. He idly wondered what those vials were doing at the foot of the bed anyway, but shook his head and continued to search. Hoping that someone wouldn't come in and catch him in the act.

==> Tamara.

The parasite quietly strode down the hallway. Her eyes focused forward as she walked, headed to the infirmary. This morning, she had dropped by there to retrieve records of another student who was brought to the infirmary often due to dizzy spells and frequent fainting. At least that's what the records said. She was sure it was more than that despite not knowing about this student. But now she had to return the folder back to its place.

Upon opening the door, Tamara's eyes immediately settled on the guilty student standing in the middle of the room who seemed to be looking for something. Her eyes flickered momentarily to the vials that earlier stood at the end of another bed, now toppled over and some broken. The very little amount of chemicals were pooled on the tiled floor and already mixed together.

A sigh, she placed the folder on the counter before pulling out her tablet and began to type into her touch-screen device as she walked soundlessly to the student. There was no emotion etched on her face. Turning the said device to the student for him to read, on the bright screen was written:

"You're going to have to explain yourself, young man. But first, do help me wrap this up."

Tamara left the student to read her message for a few seconds before withdrawing the device. She walked to a cabinet under the counter and brought out a small set of broom and pan. After then she took out a pen and a small notebook from her bag. Tearing a page off from the notebook, she wrote in her neat cursive:

"Kindly take care of the broken glass with these. Be careful not to prick yourself with them. Please also avoid making skin contact with the liquids. I will be back to find a mop to dry the puddle."

She left the message with the broom and pan to the student without any other instruction, before walking out the door again without letting him reply. Not knowing the boy spoke in written text as she did, she assumed his lack of a verbal response meant he was a bit slow on the uptake.

Taking the broom and pan, Corbin carefully set out to clean the mess he had made. He swept all the pieces dutifully before searching the floor for any stray pieces that had gone flying. Not knowing where to throw the glass, he merely placed the pan on top of a wooden cabinet, before surveying the puddle of chemicals mixed together on the floor. Stepping closer, he could smell the acrid scent invading his nose and he quickly stepped back to avoid inhaling anything toxic. Quietly, he went back and sat on the bed and wondered when the lady would come back.

She didn't look that much older than him, but Corbin really wasn't sure what to make of that as they were in a school with vampires, angels, and other supernatural creatures that others wouldn't think existed. The way she had automatically commandeered him also told Corbin that she might not be all that she seems. Stuffing his hands in his pockets, he found the piece of paper she had wordlessly handed him and he had quickly stowed away before cleaning. This is the first time I've seen a student like me, he thought, But the only real shock is that it took this long for me to meet them since I came here,

Corbin wondered if the girl was naturally mute, or chose not to speak because of certain factors like his. He might as well ask when she comes back. Leaning back against the wall, his eyes strayed to the whiteboard he had placed on one of the nearby tables, I should probably get one of those fancy tablets myself. Beats having to lug you around.

Almost just as soon as the parasite left the room, she reappeared at the door, mop in her hands. She made a beeline towards the puddle and dabbed the woolen tip of the mop on it, letting the liquid soak the mop head. Only until Tamara was sure floor was nearly dried out of the liquid was when she pulled out her tablet from her pouch and keyed in:

"I do hope you did not touch these liquids. A few of these vials contain unpleasant chemicals and organisms. Viruses, I should say, or something of the like. Somewhat toxic."

She let him read through her text for a moment before removing the mop off the floor and into its container. The floor seems to be clean of from any of the liquid now, she gathered. Tamara merely set aside the mop, but she took the pan filled with broken glass to the trash bin behind the counter. She'll have to report about this later.

Finally, Tamara turned her full attention to the student sitting soundlessly on the bed. Tamara was going to return the student file she had left on the counter later. There were other pressing matters at hand.

As she walked to approach him, her eyes caught sight of the whiteboard on the nearby table. Pausing for a moment to think, she realized that it could not be hers because today, she decided to carry light and left her whiteboard in her apartment. She wondered who could have left it.

Tamara sat on the bed next to the student and typed:

"I am an assistant here and I am certain I would be questioned about the missing vials when the attending nurses or the doctor returns. Would you care to explain to me why the vials were broken?"

Getting off the bed, Corbin made a grab at the whiteboard. Unscrewing the cap on the marker he kept on him, he quickly tried to write a proper explanation for his actions. He then turned the board and gave her a hesitant smile from behind his scarf.

"I accidentally hit the rack when I was trying to get more comfortable."

Deciding that it might be quicker to show her, Corbin sat on the bed and shifted to his position from earlier and exaggeratedly kicked his feet up. Putting them back down, it was obvious that his feet were hanging off the bed and left resting on the table where the vials had been.

He turned to the girl and gave her a slight shrug before proceeding to write once more.

"My height becomes such a nuisance at times. I didn't mean to cause any trouble. I really am sorry. Were those important? Were they going to be needed somewhere? Is there something I could do about it?"

The whiteboard wasn't big enough to accommodate all that he wanted to say but he still crammed everything in and hoped that the other would be able to understand.

When the student stood and began writing on the board, it dawned on Tamara that he was mute and she mentally chided herself for having judged him too soon. The boy turned the board to her with his written message. Just as soon as she finished reading, the boy turned to re-enact what happened before she arrived in the scene.

She then understood what happened and noted that she would move vials and other breakable things to the counter the next time she finds them close to the beds. As she thought of this, the boy wrote another message containing his apology and queries of the liquids. Tamara took her time to read the small text but she understood. She replied with:

"Honestly, I am not told what those were and what their importance meant. I was only instructed not to touch the liquids. I will try to discuss it with them. But please do be careful next time."

While Tamara gave the boy time to read her message, she wondered if the boy was truly mute or if he was only restricted as her. After that, she wrote once again,

"If it is not rude to ask, are you mute or did you choose not to speak?"

Hearing that the girl had no idea what the vials were or what they were for, Corbin began fretting over what he was supposed to do. If they were important, he could be in so much trouble. He didn't want to cause trouble. He shook his head in dismay and deflated visibly. Perhaps he could leave them a very detailed letter with an apology and an explanation. A cake maybe, just to butter up to them.

Realizing he had suddenly ignored the other, he turned to her and saw her holding out a message for him again. After reading he took out his whiteboard and wrote his answer down.

"I chose not to speak. :]

Corbin briefly wondered if adding a smiley was needed, but decided to leave it before showing it to her. Of course, during times like this, his skill would have come in handy but this was nothing compared to the risks he'd raise if he were to metaphorically open his mouth.

After giving her enough time to read, he pulled it back and started writing again,

"You?"

[[ 100% sure that tamara's the only one going to eat that cake offering ]]

Tamara read the boy's reply and nodded to herself. She could only wonder why he chose to do so. The parasite had chose to not to speak for a multitude of reasons but one of which had to do with her origins.

She was ancient and her language was long gone, and for some reason, she was unable to properly learn the verbal language of this era. She knew many languages of today well: Russian, Mandarin, English, Bahasa, but she could never speak them. She sounded unearthly.

When the boy turned to ask her the same question, she wrote on her tablet:

"I would say I have chosen not to. I speak rather oddly in the current standard of speaking, thus I have sealed my mouth."

As she turned the screen to the student, she pointed at her mouth that was covered with the tape with the X-shaped runic marking. Though she had often explained the 'tape' was to stop her from speaking, the runes were part of the spell that kept her soul sealed within the body. Of course, she would not tell him that unless he asked.

After a moment of letting him read her response, she turned the screen back to herself and wrote:

"Also, I was not able to ask, but is there a reason you are here in the infirmary? I can feel that your energy is normal enough for you not to be ill."

Unconsciously leaning further, though it wouldn't be of much help, Corbin saw what he had failed to see before; the tape that covered her mouth. From his vantage point, there he could see the tape with the x over it. He wondered if it was some sort of fashion trend, but didn't want to push so he leaned back and smiled. He was terribly curious as to what she meant about how her speech was odd when compared to the usual way of speaking, but he wasn't going to pry.

Leaning forwards again as she showed him something new she had written, a flush started rising from underneath his shirt to his cheeks. He played with the frayed ends of his scarf before writing down a response that wouldn't seem too embarrassing.

"I was dragged here by worried friends. People always seem to think that I'm about to die any second. I don't blame them."

He gestured to himself with his free hand and glanced at the mirror. Sunken eyes still stared back at him and he sighed in frustration. He was used to it, but it really does get frustrating in the long run.

After pulling his board back, he began to write again,

"I guess you're an assistant then?" he asks as he gestured to folders she had put down earlier, "You seem a little young though."

Tamara tilted her head slightly as she read the boy's explanation. She took a few moments to glance up at the boy's face, then back at the board. It occurred to her that compared to normal people, he did look rather sickly. Of course, she only took appearances into account only after she confirmed they were ill.

As one who was once a mage, her senses remain enhanced enough to feel the energy flowing in other's bodies. If there was something off in that flow, she'd know if they were unwell. And that was only the time she would observe their appearances based on symptoms that show outwardly. But this student was healthy.

The parasite's eyes blinked expressionlessly when she turned the device back towards the student with the message:

"Of course. I had noticed your appearance seemed rather unhealthy. Though I've usually paid no attention to such for a while, given that I would see myself appearing like this everyday."

She held the device with both hands in front of her at chest level, facing the student. She had always been told how sickly she appeared, given her build and her pale complexion. Her eyes often looked dry and dull as well. Though truth be told, Tamara was in fact suffering asthma and possibly even anemia with her current body, but that had barely anything to do with how she looked like.

After giving the student ample time to read her message, she wrote again:

"Ah, yes, so I do. But do not be mislead, I am much older than I appear. Also, you may call me Tamara."
