She liked how he patted her head and told her curiosity was ok. It reminded her of how her dad used to reassure her when she was little. At first, she finally thought she'd have a friend who she knew like the back of her hand. Expectantly, she waited for his reply, wondering what he could possibly be.

"I assure you, I am a living thing."

Avian just stared blankly at him, blinking a few times in confusion. She was waiting for some clarification, elaboration, or some sort of explanation to follow. But he didn't say anything after that. It appeared that was all she had to say. The girl had used up all her courage for the day to dare to pry anymore, so she gave in.

"Ah, of course," Avian sighed, "Well, thank you for telling me,"

After that awkward questioning, she looked for a way to switch topics quickly.

"So, what are you doing out here anyways?" she asked hurriedly, eager to get away from the previous topic.

Silence.

Yesterday wasn't bothered by silence. He had no capacity to, until he learned it. So far, he definitely hadn't picked up on the fact that silence could be awkward.

"I wanted to look around the island." The answer came simply enough. "I heard of a park, and so I came. It is quite a nice place to visit." At least, what he could see of it looked like a very nice place to visit.

He glanced down at her book. "And you are drawing out here, yes? With your birds?"

Avian perked up at the word "park".

"Yes! It is a nice place to visit!" she beamed, taking the pale boy by the hand, "Let's go in right now! I know some great trees to climb!"

His hand was cold to the touch, but she expected that. He always had a sickly complexion to him and wore heavy coats, so no wonder he'd be cold. What she wasn't expecting was the...smoothness to his skin. She knew it was good to have soft skin, but his was almost...slick. Her blue eyes wavered on his hand for a moment, before she brushed it off. She just said he had a sickly complexion, so maybe whatever illness he had gave him slipper skin.

But that only made her think of more possibilities. Maybe Yesterday wasn't a ghost, phantom, or Russian. Maybe he was just a guy who was sick. Or a man with fish skin? Avian blinked all the absurd ideas out of her head, telling herself she wouldn't pry about who he was until he was ready to tell her.

"And yeah, I was drawing with this yellow finch," she nodded, "But I think he'd like it better in the park,"

When his hand was gripped, all his sensory monitors seemed to jump at the same time. Temperature sensors and emotional algorithms that spewed data and reels of people holding hands played back in his mind. On the surface, his expression didn't change it all. His eyes stared right ahead, blank as ever.

His legs moved and he followed her into the park, where there were plenty of trees and benches and playground equipment. Many bird among the branches, too, and these little rodent things that he'd identified as squirrels. Fascinating.

"Ah, yes, the park is very nice." He looked around for a couple more moments, following steadily behind the girl with his hand clasped in hers. "Is it a common place to be?"

Avian thought something like a handhold would get at least some sort of reaction of him. But still, nothing. But when she led him to the park, she did notice how he looked around at the trees and benches, almost as if he were surveying a new terrain. Avian smiled, knowing she had found something that interested him.

"Yes, it is," she nodded, "I come here whenever I have free time,"

A few more finches flew down from the trees, landing around the girl's feet and making shrill chirping noises. She smiled down at them and watched as they hopped around her.

"The birds like me here too," she shrugged.

Free time? Ah, yes, humans had jobs and families and lives. Yesterday was leisurely in some definitions; he had nobody he needed to care for, he didn't need money for food or to pay rent, he didn't need to keep clean...

There was a lot that he didn't need that was necessary to humans. That helped a lot.

Yesterday's eyes tracked the little birds hopping around Avian's feet, pecking at the seeds and grasses. It was cute, or at least that's what he thought the definition was.

"The birds seem to like you quite a bit. Why is that?"

After being so curious about Yesterday and even prying at who he really was, Avian realized that he barely knew anything about her either! She probably should have told him more about herself before expecting anything out of him.

"Oh...well, it's my 'special power' I guess you could call it," she shrugged, "Many people on this island have supernatural powers, and mine is birds. They've always followed me and looked out for me,"

Her blue eyes cast down at the birds around her feet and she chuckled.

"Although compared to most people's powers, mine aren't that impressive," she said, "But they do keep good company,"

Ah yes, those special powers that everybody around here seemed to have. People didn't look intimidated by them, so perhaps he could pass as 'normal' because he acted strangely. Maybe people thought of them as his powers.

"I think it is quite interesting. You get to study the birds a lot." He hadn't had the chance to learn about them outside of a few field guides he found in the library. There were many, but the ones found locally on the island were impressive, too.

"Special powers are normal here, yes?"

Avian felt herself smile a little at his comment on her powers. Although the compliment sounded just as hollow and monotonous as everything else he said, she still appreciated it. He was one of only two people that found her powers interesting so far. Well, three if she was counting her mom. To most of the teachers and students on the island, her powers were considered very tame and almost useless, so it was nice to hear someone took interest in them.

"Mhm," she nodded, "I guess it's nice to have birds around to draw all the time,"

"Special powers are normal here, yes?"

"Oh of course!" she nodded before asking carefully, "You...didn't know that? This island has a whole academy for kids and teachers with powers,"

Yesterday tilted his head ever so slightly, the glow behind his eyes becoming a fraction more intense. "No, I did not. I was unaware that this island was almost entirely inhabited by those with special abilities." He shook his head, though it looked just as mechanical as the rest of his movements.

"In retrospect, I suppose that I was silly to think otherwise. Many people have displayed their powers here." Which meant everyone was quite open about their abilities.

Did that mean, perhaps, it wasn't quite so important for him to be human?
