Cloudy skies and winter air was the color of choice for the early Friday afternoon. The noise outside rose and waned as students came home from classes and the city began its transition from daylife to nightlife. Most of her roommates had come and gone and she had the express rarity of being home alone. It wasn't her favorite scenario to be in but she always did her best work when in these conditions. Many of her new classes had chosen to be heavy-handed in the workload they supplied their students and so most of her morning had been spent dwindling down the stack of work that threatened her possibility of a free weekend.

Legs crossed on the living room couch she typed furiously against her laptop keyboard. Each flurry of key presses added an ingredient she would need to make Chankonabe an Asian dish that'd piqued her interest. While she would never admit it to her mother, Isabella had grown enamored with cooking. It wasn't the warm feeling of happiness others got for making other people food that fueled her but instead the express correlation it had on her as a student. The ability to create a finished product from nothing, the focus required to perfect it, and the potential occurrence of improvisation kept her on her toes and it was this thrill that she had come to enjoy in her cooking class most.

Closing her laptop she let out a tired breath which rushed out of her mouth and filled the air around her with smoke. Deciding to fill the silence of the room she began to doodle on the corner of her notes. Earlier it had been a witch flying on a broom, now it was a wizard creating stars in the sky...Even she deserved a break.

Liliana arrived home a little before three o'clock. She had spent a good part of her morning working on a class project due on Monday, and then on her way home, she stopped off at the library to check out some books on child psychology. All she wanted now was just to unwind and put her feet up.

"I'm home. Anyone up for a movie or an anime binge session?" she called out as she removed her winter jacket and boots and placed her book bag by the door; before making her way to the kitchen.

Minutes later, Liliana reappeared from the kitchen and plopped herself down on the sofa with a big bowl of buttered popcorn that she placed on the coffee table.

"Hey there," she said as she greeted Isabella with a smile. "How has your day been?

The clicks of the locks on the door broke Isabela from her doodle binge. She had made it all the way down the side of her notes and was finishing up her last doodle of a man being pounced on by several small cats. The traveling voice made it clear Liliana was the first to arrive home and after checking the time she began to notice how quickly the day was moving. Most of her work had been finished and a few readings remained but nothing that would be hindered by a movie break.

She smiled as Liliana came into view, closing her notebook and placing it to the side. " Its been pretty chill. Just working through all this." Isabella pointed to the stack of books on the other side of her. There were books on Greek, Latin, Magical theory, Potioneering, and the Historical Use Of Magic On The Dead. All entertaining in their own way but dreadfully full in content.

"How was your day? You have classes or just hanging around the city?" Isabella's stomach growled as her body remembered she hadn't eaten in a while.

"Oh geez," Liliana exclaimed in awe after she took notice of all the books and topics Isabella had been plowing through. "And here I was complaining about the two books on child psychiatry that I have to read."

Making herself comfortable on the couch, Liliana grimaced a little at her roommate's question.
"I actually spent most of the morning finishing a group project that needs to be handed in on Monday," she explained. "And one of the group didn't show up til almost eleven and then left half a half-hour later," she said with a shake of her head.

"I'm just glad my part's done," she confessed. "Now I can relax and just chill for a bit." she said as she took a handful of popcorn and gestured for Isabella to help herself if she wanted.

Isabella dug into the bowl and plopped a few of the popped kernels into her mouth. " That's pretty shitty of them. I always feel like half the work of a group project is making sure the group does their share of the work." her face took on a sick look as she remembered some of the stresses of former group projects.

"Back at Dark Crystal, the worse part for me was being put into a leadership role only because I was the most organized about how work should be divided...Thankfully none of my professors here have given me one." Her mind formed the dreaded word of Yet and she cursed the idea of what a group projects on any of these topics would look like. When her goal of being a professor came true one thing was certain..she was never assigning group projects.

"Actually I never asked what your major is. You looking to go into a medical profession?" she swiped a few more pieces of popcorn from the bowl and devoured them within a few seconds.

"It's hard being the responsible one," Liliana clearly empathized with Isabella's plight. "Teachers always seem to assume we will be a good role model or something for the rest of the group," she said as she thought back to her own group experiences.

"Reality is, we end up doing most of the work," she said, slightly exasperated by this truth as she took another handful of popcorn, realising then that she was hungrier than she originally thought.

"Not really medical, more like mental health," Liliana replied as she realised that she had never really spoken to her roommate about what she was taking. "I am doing a degree in social work because I want to counsel the recently undead."

"Oh?! That's great really. I imagine that is a heavy transition, especially with some people in this country promoting the negative stigma that comes with undeath. What made you choose that specific demographic of people?"

Isabella was very genuine in her curiosity as she turned her self on the couch to face Liliana. With her fuzzy socks hugging her feet and large hoodie enveloping her Isabella was as cozy as could be. She took a small handful of popcorn and readied herself to store more information under Liliana's mental file.

Even when she was younger the number of options available to students on the island was tremendous in terms of professions and educational focuses. Being that it was now far into the future and the amount of technology and cultures assimilated into the island had skyrocketed the options were rapidly closing in on limitless.

"I know, and it's just not right. It's natural in my opinion, there has always been undead, or those that don't want to move on," she agreed as she crossed her legs comfortably before her on the couch.

"What made you choose that specific demographic of people?"

Here Liliana just smiled at Isabella's question. "It's because I work with the dead daily..." she admitted. "I am, what is known as, a psychopomp... sort of a reaper, but not. I escort souls to the underworld... I often explain it as being, "a concierge to the recently departed"," she joked lightly. "Except in the afterlife, you check-in, but very rarely out."

Isabella's eyebrows raised as she heard the word Psychopomp. They were something she had heard of during her studies but never had she actually met one in person. It was a curious thing she the creatures of different mythologies coexist in front of her considering the outside worlds...or what used to be the outside world's perspective.

Giggling a bit at Liliana quip about checking out had reminded her of some of the dorm mates she used to have. "I've only ever met Reapers in my life and I was born here. Do you have a requirement in terms of souls escorted? I know a few Reapers had to spend certain days of each month away from the Material Plane."

She was curious about the differences between the two species. When it came to magic the number of ways to practice it was too numerous to count and simply labeling herself Witch left much to the imagination. Being a creature born for a particular task must've forced some similarities between the different types.

"Requirements? No," Liliana shook her head at Isabella's question. "I don't reap souls... I am simply the one that guides, and if needed, comforts the soul once it has left the body."

"I don't generally know beforehand when people are going to pass on as a lot of reapers do, except sometimes, with young children I am allowed to wait at their side so that their soul doesn't get lost," she explained thoughtfully.

"And for me... time just flows differently. An hour in the afterlife is often a blip in time here, seconds maybe..." she confided, not really sure how to explain how everything worked.

"How about you?" Liliana asked, very curious now. "You said you were born here? That's somewhat of a rarity, especially given how many of us on the island tend to be from elsewhere."
