Well, so much for that. Hudson let out yet another huff as he dropped himself back down into his seat. Didn't she know he was old, not frail at all, and too lazy to get up out of his chair without cause?

"Couldn't show you there anyway, the whole place isn't exactly free to access, and it's currently undergoing repairs from the tsunami." That was the downside of sitting it out on a rock in the ocean - anything that happened in the ocean was going to screw them up.

"Basically, a dorm parent is just that - it's your parent while you're here. Anything that you'd normally go to your parent with, you go to me for. Scholarship students get a certain amount monthly allocated to them, but I'm the one who dishes it out to make sure you're not wearing year old clothes while buying expensive video games. Someone giving you trouble? You go to me. Issue with the dorm itself? Me again." It was simple enough stuff. Really, the only people who had a real hard time with it were the kind of people who had never really had parents. Unfortunately, those kinds of people did exist, and he always found himself at a loss explaining to them. Hopefully she wasn't one of those.

Maddie did have parents, luckily. Adopted maybe, but she saw them as if they were her biological parents. So when Hudson explained what a dorm parent was, Maddie beamed at him. She couldn't help but think of him more like a dorm grandpa than a parent, but she didn't want to say that out loud for fear of coming off rude.

"Oh! Okay, that makes sense. Did you...sign up for this job?" She squinted with her question. He seemed...grumpy. Maybe he didn't want to be a dorm parent and be annoyed by kids all the time? She was trying to determine if she should only go to him on important occasions and just try and deal with things on her own.

Maddie stood and stretched her arms over her head, she didn't have any more questions after that, though she was wondering where everyone else was. Maybe it was some...prank on the new dorm parent? Sounded unlikely.

Bandit jumped some when his master stood and opened an eye to give her an annoyed look. He'd been comfortable.

Hudson couldn't help but squint at bit at that. Did it seem like he hadn't signed up for this? Did she think they'd just assigned people at random?

"Yes. After the tsunami, they needed more hands." Not because lots of dorm parents had died or anything, but because a lot had things they needed to do. Parents and kids who needed to be checked in on. Even more kids had become involved in the program because their homes were severely damaged, and the school had fared better and been repaired quicker.

"I suppose that about wraps up the introduction. I'm going to have to check down at the office to see what happened to our second - they might have pulled out of the program at the last minute, or maybe they're just lost." It happened sometimes, especially if a kid was new to the island overall. "In general, just bang on my door if you need something."

Maddie's smile faltered a little. Had she upset him? "Okay, mister." She didn't sound confident in it. She still didn't want to bother him much, unless she absolutely had to.

As Maddie gathered up her bag and gently stroked Bandit's head to wake him up and get him moving. She paused at the door and looked over her shoulder. "Oh! If you have any ideas of how I could help with...everything. I'm free." She almost mentioned how sad it was that all those people had lost friends or their homes.

After he answered her, she would nod and head off, Bandit wobbling after her in a half-sleep state.

He could only assume that when she said 'with everything', she meant 'with tsunami cleanup efforts'. Even so, it didn't matter, because all he could do was give a shrug of his shoulders. "I'm only helping with work related things. I think they're doing signups in the home office, if you're interested." He wasn't terribly interested in helping with that kind of cleanup himself. Nothing in his skillset made him any more competent than anyone else.

He waited for her to leave before he got up, letting out an exasperated sigh as he headed into the hallway. He'd have to go to the office and see just what the holdup was.
