"A good idea is to try some things now, the ones you really want to try... and then come back afterwards, after dancing, to try the rest," Violet said laughingly.

As they went to find a table, Violet didn't actually think anything of it when Orange Grin sat down first. She had kind of become used to the lack of chivalry over the decades, and more so in the last thirty years. So when Orange Grin jumped back up and held her chair out for her, she was extremely surprised by the gesture.

"Thank you," she said as she took a seat. "You are a real gentleman," she said with a warm smile, "I can't say when was the last time a person held my chair out for me," she told him quite truthfully. "It's probably been years," she added thoughtfully.

Orange Grin had been careful not to grab too much to eat at first. He intended to stay at the Ball for a while so he'd surely have other chances to try the other things later.

He returned Violet's warm smile with one of his own. "I try to be a gentleman, especially at an event like this. It felt like the right thing to do." Then he quietly moved back to sit in his own chair. He just hoped she didn't ask him to scoot her in toward the table at all.

Orange Grin looked over at her with a little bit of surprise. "Really? I thought that kind of thing was more common than that. No offense but you seem like the kind of person who people would want to do those sorts of things for?"

"Perspective perhaps," Violet replied thoughtfully at Orange Grin's surprise at her affirmation, "You see, I was born in an age where manners and chivalry ruled. Men always complimented women, kissed their hands in greeting, held doors open. They pulled back chairs, helped them in and out of carriages, asked permission for everything, gave gifts, wrote poetry..." she told him as she sipped at her drink.

"Now things are very different. Sure men are gentlemanly and polite, but it's nowhere near what it was in the past," she told him pleasantly.

At Orange Grin's kind words, Violet actually blushed, or blushed as much as a being like her could, "You might think that, but it's true..." she told him, thinking he was very sweet indeed. ""Maybe it's the fact I spent much of my time in the Narrow Reality... people out there are too worried about those things normally, unless, of course, they are trying to woo a woman.

"Is it common where you are from?" she asked curiously, "Do people do chivalrous things there too?"

"Oh, I guess i'm probably not as gentlemanly as the men, uh, in your age were either. I just try to do some things here and there," he shrugged it off. Orange Grin had a decent working knowledge of manners but what she was describing was honestly more than he had ever seen done. Like she said though, things were different nowadays.

He wasn't shy about eating in front of her, though at least he had the decency to avoid eating it too fast or talking with his mouth open. "Right, I guess dating someone does make a lot of people go a little more out of their way," he said before taking another bite of some sort of puffed pastry with toppings colored deep purple and black. He closed his eyes for a second. The food was really good.

"It's not really any more or less common than here, honestly. Most of the people are as chivalrous as those in the narrow reality. It's the more upper-class ones that are taught to be that way but, like me, even they aren't quite to the point of the men your described. Not anymore."

"No man today is that gentlemanly," Violet laughed, "Don't worry about it, please. Your manners are excellent," she reassured him. "Looking back, I see that sometimes it was almost too much," she told him as she took a small bite of her mini quiche tart. It was delicious, she wasn't too sure but it tasted a little bit like smoked cheese and some type of ham.

"You are from upper class, nobility, perhaps?" Violet said, or rather inquired, as she looked at the young man. He had a certain something about him, an air, maybe, that led her to believe he was.

"Thank you," he said and actually looked a little relieved. Despite the mask he was a person that was fairly easy to read. "I'm happy I could give you just a little bit of what you remember from that time." Orange Grin wasn't just saying that either. He genuinely was glad about it.

He polished off another piece of food that had some sort of spicy filling in it. It wasn't too strong but he went for a sip of his drink anyway just in case.

"Not nobility exactly. At least not really the way you mean," he paused as he tried to figure out how to explain it without giving too much away. "My family is well known back home and lessons on manners and other things were just part of growing up there. But I spent a lot of time with all kinds of different people." That was a good way of putting it, he thought. No lies and only minimal dodges. He wasn't trying to be dishonest, just hiding who he was. Which still felt kind of weird and wrong.

"Aside from the chivalry, what was it like living in that time for you? You don't seem like the kind of person to have lived a boring life."

Violet thought it was incredibly sweet that he had wanted to make her happy with such a nice gesture. Looking at Orange Grin, she smiled and let him know she appreciated this.

"A lot of things have changed since then. What is considered entertainment has changed, treatment of people in general, social classes aren't as great, way less poverty, sickness, disease..." Violet remarked thoughtfully.

"Things have definitely gotten better, social politeness and manners might be less. But what has been gained in exchange has definitely been worth it," she mused, not having really considered how lucky she was to have seen this change til now.

Orange Grin did exactly what he had named himself for. He smiled happily as it seemed like Violet was enjoying their little chat. "I guess seeing all those things change gives you a pretty good perspective. Some day i'll be the one telling people all about how things have changed for the better." It was a funny picture. It wasn't very often that he thought too much about getting older.

"Well," he said as he wiped his mouth with the edge of his napkin and put it down. "How about one more dance before I let another gentleman step in to try to impress you?" The night was still fairly young and he was sure another person would step in to dance with her as soon as they separated. How could they not? If he'd been older he would have been happy to spend the night talking to her, but it wasn't fair of him to keep her there. And he did want to try to dance with at least a few different people if he could manage it.

"And I am sure you will do it very well," Violet remarked very honestly. She could easily see Orange Grin as being a very personable, kind and understanding adult who wanted to help others in some way.

"I'd like that very much," Violet replied as she placed her napkin on a plate and then got to her feet, "Another dance, I mean... your company has been very enjoyable, but I should also let some other fortunate person enjoy your company this evening," she smiled as she offered the younger man her arm so they could head back out to the dance floor for one last dance.

Orange Grin continued to smile as he stood and carefully pushed his own chair in before gently taking her hand to lead them both back onto the dance floor. "Thank you, it's been really fun dancing and talking with you this evening, Violet."

It seemed to be getting more crowded as the night went on but they were able to find a gap with enough room for them to dance. Once more Orange Grin took Violet's hand in his left and reached his right hand to just below her left shoulder blade. Carefully maintaining the proper dance form as best he could. This time his steps were a little closer to the normal way of doing it and his movements were a little more confident. Perhaps now he had warmed up some, or at least become more used to how the dancing was subtly different here.
