A Close Call

Staring over the edge of the roof, Hiraani frowned at the darkness below. Her toes of her bare feet went past the edge and curled against the side of the building. She swayed slightly, trying to figure out what to do. To jump, or not to jump. That was the serious question.

Only a few times before in her life had the girl gotten this close to committing suicide. She always backed out at the last second. This time she vowed not to do that. Just let herself hit the ground. If she landed right, she'd crush her head and be dead instantly.

Taking a deep breath, the eighteen-year-old spread out her arms and leaned forward. Forward. Forward. Until she dropped off the side of the building. She folded her arms to her side and acted as if she were doing a dive into a pool of water.

At the last second, Hiraani's wings sprung to action and she soared through the air. She got back to the roof and laid down, exhausted.

Ah, the roof, a place that was always appeared to be deserted by the populous of the school, well all except one slacker, the name of the slacker was Cade Laidon. He had such an unorthodox name and his long light brown hair and black angel wing tattoo on his back made him stand out quite a bit. His clothing didn't help much to make him stand out less, after all he looked like some small time punk rocker; white tanktop, his jeans, black and tight, hair pulled back in a pony tail, some kind of chain worn on the belt loops of the jeans, but he liked it like that, it was better for him. Rather he was quite calm and not thuggish, lazy he was, but thuggish he was not. A lazy yawn came from his mouth as he opened his eyes, he was on the rooftop had been there for only a few minutes. He had not expected anyone else to get on the roof, but when he opened his eyes he saw a girl flying. Ah what a joy to see another flyer, much like himself. He had met a few others like him since he came to the school, Atalia, and his girlfriend Danielle. He slowly walked over to greet her. "Hey, that was cool."

Blinking, Hiraani shook her head at him while standing. Sometime during her airborne state her hair had come out of the ponytail she had it in. Grumbling as her black hair fell around her face, she scooped it all over one shoulder and quickly tied it in a knot.

Hiraani again shook her head at the man, realizing he hadn't seen that she intended to end her life. Cursing under her breath, the girl folded her wings against her back before speaking. "Uh-huh. Sure." She said sarcastically before she began to walk off, her flowy white skirt hitting around her ankles.

The girl's response to his greeting was highly unexpected. She was shaking her head for some reason. Maybe she didn't agree with him. Oh well. He just looked at her as she stood there as he waited for her to say something in return, which wasn't exactly what he was thinking that she would say. He scratched his head as she began to walk off. That is quite rude of her, Cade thought. "Hey, where you goin'?" he called as he would now try to stop her in tracks. His black feather wings suddenly appeared on his back and he took flight, stopping in front of her. His wings spread out farther than his arms could reach, he stood there. "I just gave you a compliment. At least show some form of gratitude." he said.

"Hey, where you goin'?"

She wanted to say "Somewhere where you're not there" but instead just said, "Doesn't matter!" And kept walking. This was most deffinately not good timing on his part.

"I just gave you a compliment. At least show some form of gratitude."

Hiraani frowned. She really didn't feel like talking. Not to him. Not to anyone. What she really wanted to do is just say she had just tried to kill herself and for him to please leave her alone. But her curse she had about not talking about the past prevented her from saying that.

Instead, she just tilted her head to the side and stared at him.

"Doesn't matter!"

Well, one thing was most definitely certain; this girl was quite the stubborn one. It was sad really. Then a weird thought just ran through Cade's mind. It kind of reminded him of himself before he came to the school and his first few weeks here. He was arrogant and cold himself. He didn't really want to talk to anyone either. The friends he had made here had taught to lighten up and open up. It seemed that this girl was the same way. The girl didn't say anything after that. "Umm...okay then..." He seated himself at the edge of the roof, leaning back slightly as he did so, as if he were going to fall off. "Have it your way." he said calmly. He was testing her, in a way, to see how she would react to that.

"Have it your way."

Hiraani nodded and frowned. She returned to the building's edge and sighed down into the darkness. She looked around, noting even the light from the moon was in a shade of a grayish hugh. She frowned in hatred. Her whole life she had wished for color. Listening to the other kids taunt her by discribing what each color was. If she saw a color, Hiraani most likely wouldn't be able to identify the colors. Even her dreams were in black and white.

Cade just looked at her as she returned to her spot at the edge of the roof. Is she up to something, he thought as he sat straight on the edge. He noted her facial expression which was conspicuously negative. Something had to be bothering her. He just couldn't pinpoint it just yet. Cade had some emotionally issues himself. Over the several months that he has been, he learned to cope with them. His curiosity getting the best of him, he threw himself off the edge, but he quickly gathered himself with his wings. Now afloat, Cade broke the silence again. "So, you come up here often?"

When he spoke, Hiraani broke out of her thoughts and looked down at him. She frowned slightly and shook her head. "No. I just got her a few days ago." She didn't mention that the only reason she had come up to the roof was so she'd be high enough that when she fell to the ground it'd do irrepairable damage.

Well that's odd. Apparently the girl is new to the school. The first thing came to mind when she answered was that she just didn't like the place. Cade shrugged. "So you're new...I take it you don't really like the place much do you? Err...y'know what, you don't have to answer that." He ascended in the air so that he would reach her eye level. "In fact, I didn't like it much either when I first started out." He was hoping to at least strike up a conversation.
