images (11).jpegStefan had finally finished up his album. With that being done, he had significantly more time than he was used to. Trying to figure out how to spend that time had been an issue. Stefan was getting bored with everything.
That's why he was sitting on a couch in the community center. Stefan decided to volunteer with a youth outreach to try and set them up with good role models. They had told Stefan he would be perfect as you would be seen as more of a friend or a bigger brother than a parent.
So he sat patiently waiting at the time they told him to meet Kyo. While waiting, Stefan pulled out his custom guitar that had been gifted to him by Zora, made sure his mirrored sunglasses were pushed up, and began idly strumming to pass the time.

The girl arrived on time, shuffling into the center with her ears pinned back against her head. They told her it would be good for her to meet her 'big brother' one on one. Something about her being able to connect better.
She looked around for Stefan, recognizing him quickly from the picture and shuffling over towards him with her arms hugged tight to her torso.
"Hi.. Stefan?" Her voice was quiet and apprehensive.

Stefan heard the door open and quieted his playing down incase it wasn't Kyo. He didn't want to bother anyone else that may be coming through. He figured most wouldn't mind but it was the polite thing to do.
The quiet voice just made it over the sounds of his guitar and caused him to stop playing when he heard his name. Looking up from behind mirror aviators, Stefan's lopsided grin came out at the young lady standing there. He knew immediately it was Kyo from the picture he had been given.
"That's me. You must be Kyo right?"

She nodded to him in response, her reptilian eyes watching every little movement he made with twitchy suspicion, as if the girl was an animal ready to bolt at the first unexpected action. One of her ears twitched and she glanced down at his guitar.

"...You're good at playing that." She said, her voice so quiet it barely broke the silence. It was hard to believe that this kid could be the same dangerous monster he was warned about.

The comment made Stefan smile. A genuine smile, one that was accompanied by a small exhale through his nose. He looked down at the guitar and then back up to Kyo, the smile staying put.
"Thanks. Do you play?"
The question was honest. He knew only what he was told about Kyo and that was mainly things to keep him safe and a little about her background. But Stefan knew that wasn't it. He wanted to get to know the real her.
He slid to the side on the couch making room for her to sit if she wanted. Moving wasn't required as there was already plenty of space, but he wanted her to know he wasn't going to crowd her.

She shook her head. She'd never picked up an instrument. She'd heard stories about her mom playing, but her dad had never really pushed her to learn. She climbed up onto the couch, sitting on the opposite side from him. She had a kind of apprehensive trust on her face.
"No I don't." She was still quiet, but she seemed less nervous. Her answers were still short and guarded.

Stefan made sure to keep his voice friendly and not raise it. He knew this had to be strange for her. Meeting a total stranger and basically told to go get along with someone significantly older than you.
"Would you wanna learn? I have another one I could bring and teach you."
Kyo seemed like she was getting a little more comfortable. Stefan had to admit he had been a little nervous too. His natural social personality lended to him being more open but this was something extremely knew to him.

She shifted a little. It would be fun to learn something like that. He can see her relaxing more, the introduction of a natural topic of conversation seeming to be helping along. She gave him a short nod, looking back up at him.

"Yes please" She responded shortly, giving him a tight lipped smile. It wasn't fake, but it was empty. It was a real smile that couldn't last.

Stefan smiled again back at Kyo. Things were going pretty well so far, as long as he didn't bomb it from here. He sat the guitar down in its case and leaned back against the couch a bit.
"So tell me some about yourself, and not in the doctor trying to help way. Tell me what you like doing."
He wanted to try to make her feel like this wasn't a therapy session. He wasn't there to fix all her problems but he was there to be a friend to talk to.

Things she liked doing? They never asked that. They always asked how she felt about where she was living, what she thought about her transformations, how she felt about her dad. It was never a question like that.

"I like playing basketball" She replied, her voice gradually getting louder with each subsequent thing she said.
