Personality Description: Loisa’s job might seem like a stressful one, but she takes pride in what she does. Sometimes a little too much. She relishes every contract she handles, and cackles at every successful legal exploit and loophole she takes advantage of. She even secretly admires her own wit at becoming a lawyer and doing what she is good at, to her family's dismay. She also enjoys the little gambles in life, and coming out on top. Thus, she drinks and gambles money; a little too much sometimes.
She almost never takes up criminal defense jobs, but whenever she does, she never gives up until the defense is pronounced ‘not guilty.’ Se personally sees herself as a speeding train; never stops and mows everything in her way down’, when it comes to her job. She also has a serious side, which only shows itself when contracts go wrong, or when someone’s situation goes sour. Part of her motivation is to help others and to dole out retribution to those who deserve it. She also is a bit of a neat freak.
Powers: I. Geasa
Atty. Dimaculangan specializes in geasa, or contracts. Generally her role is that of a litigation attorney who reviews and issues contracts.
Her geasa have three aspects.
1. The cause – the thing that brings about the need for a binding contract
2. The terms – The conditions that both parties must agree to
3. The consequences – the magical punishments that inflict each of the members of the contract, either carried out personally by the attorney or carried out automatically
The geasa is sealed by a spell that all wizard attorneys learn by heart. Both parties must be present at the time of the sealing, to confirm all sections of the agreement and to seal the spell. The power that governs any promise or contract powers the spell, as well as the willingness of the concerned parties to enter a binding contract.
The contracts move independently once sealed. Loisa won't have to do anything if someone breaks the contract, but the spell will dole out the consequences immediately. Loisa will be notified by the contract that the agreement was broken.
Loisa also handles the paperwork, which includes a handwritten contract, but it is more of a formality and documentation. Most of the contracts are for legal matters such as court orders, but civil cases such as bindings and truth spells also can be carried out.
II. Sorcery
Loisa also has mastery of basic sorcery, prerequisite for anyone who wishes to take up magical law. This includes basic elemental magic in two opposing forces (In her case, she took up fire and water/ice) and matter transformation (small-scale vanishing, moving objects). She doesn’t feel much need for these, and only uses them in dire situations. Though she is perfectly capable of doing magic with her bare hands, she uses her staff to focus her spells better.
The spells she knows:
Basic fire – conjuring fire, no more than a tongue of flame 10 feet long. It’s also useful for makeshift light sources.
Basic ice – ice radiates from a visible spot. Basic ice rules apply, so the ice can still melt, damage glass and fragile items, etc.
Basic geomancy – applies to earth, anywhere from sand to beanbag-sized rocks. Very taxing on the body and on one’s mana resources.
Shield – creates a shield between herself and whatever’s attacking, large enough to shield a width of three people. Physical items can’t get past it, but certain stronger mana-based spells may be able to penetrate.
Mobility – move items lighter than herself. She can even keep them hovering independently for a few hours.
Biography:
Loisa’s family is distantly descended from a powerful <i>mangkukulam</i> (witch/sorcerer) in the area. The power was handed down, usually through the female line, until Spanish influences had all but taught everyone that witchcraft was bad. The power slowly fell into disuse, though many female members still had it.
Luckily, the Dimaculangan family at the time of Loisa’s birth wasn’t at all destitute. They were pretty well-to-do, and they were at that point where they wanted their three children to be an engineer, a lawyer, and a doctor.
Loisa was stuck with the lawyer role. Ordinarily she would have gone along with her parent’s wishes, but she also had the magical talent of their ancestor. She tried to explain to her parents that she would like to explore her powers more, but they insisted on putting her through the De La Salle University for pre-law. Loisa was having none of that, and escaped to her uncle’s house (the uncle no one talks about) as a wizard apprentice.
She put herself through a few wizard training schools, until she qualified for a scholarship in France. She graduated from the wizards’ law school in France, and passed the bar in the same country. She went back to the Philippines to show her parents that she had melded their interests together, but her family was less than impressed. She was now a “witch” who was “tearing this Christian family apart”, so she took off again, this time to Chicago, where she worked for a firm. Soon, she broke off the firm partly due to union reasons, and partly because the legal grapevine allowed her to hear of Manta Carlos. She set up her own office on the island, and is currently open to apprentices and legal clients.
