[ Hari Takahiro ]

Hari was all nerves.

People usually made him nervous in general, but Professor Watanabe was a whole different caliber of intimidating. He didn't give off a very hostile vibe in person. In fact, he was charmingly polite. Hari's problem was that Professor Watanabe was a mind leagues more refined than his.

He'd read his incredible papers, and he attended some of his classes as a spectator and found he was just as brilliant in person. Magistrar Octain was just as competent as he was but... the prospect of studying under Octain wasn't something Hari could stomach at all. Professor Watanabe was tamer, someone that gave off a presence that was easier to trust, and Hari was interested in the spells' magical history and the theoretical aspect of his lessons as much as the practical applications.

Still, that only made it comparatively easier. He set a day aside to finally visit Professor Watanabe's office, and the day before it, he nervously cooked up a bento for him and obsessively read his papers just in case. Hari was new at this whole magic business, but he wanted to show Professor Watanabe that his lack of experience could be made up for with earnest enthusiasm.

Fast forward on the day set, eleven o' clock, outside Professor Watanabe's office. Hari was pretty certain he wore too much jewelry for this, and his hair could not be braided cleaner or tighter. He kept the lunch in a neat wrap in his backpack, took a deep breath and knocked.

"Mr. Watanabe?"

Tucker had mostly spent the morning on his classes but the thing about early morning classes during this time of the year was that they end too son. At least for him. Tucker stood at one end of his office, looking through one of the latest addition to his collection, trying to piece together the contents of it. There were only a few things now that kept Tucker busy and decoding this half of a grimoire had somehow found its way in his priorities.

But before he would even reach a point that he was going to end up frustrated with the book (again), he brought it out of his sight and closed the pages. Right on cue, there was a knock from his door. Hm, he wasn't expecting a guest today. "Come in, the door's unlocked," he called out as he made his way to his desk to lay down the book.

The door swung open and Tucker greeted the student with a smile when he looked up, easily taking note of his uneasiness. "May I help you with something?" he asked.

Hari immediately bowed.

I apologize for visiting your office unannounced,” he said in extremely polite Japanese. “My name is Hari Takahiro. I’m a Biology major, but recently I found out some things that I wish to learn more about.

He took a deep breath and raised his arm. He clenched his fist, and the arm morphed into wood, the quality looking like a willow tree branch in a forty-five degree angle. “There is an ancient, magical tree living inside me, but I don’t know how to bring it to its full potential. I know you’re not a Powers teacher, but I wish to study this magic too instead of just being able to control it. Is it possible for you to tutor me?

Tucker was caught off guard, both from his sudden formality and his way of greeting. For a split-second the surprise was evident in his face but it quickly melded back to his usual smile as he finished his introduction. Tucker's smile had an air of amusement; it had been quite a while since he'd heard anyone speak to him in that manner and it made him feel nostalgic, almost a little homesick.

He wasn't expecting a demonstration--usually those who come to him had little to no idea how to wield their magic, but it seemed to him like Hari was one of those who had a knack for figuring out some things. His smile only grew as he stood up from his table and walked to Hari. There was a hum in his tone as he addressed him.

"That is quite an interesting magic, indeed," he began, responding to Hari in formal Japanese as what he was now accustomed, taking a moment to observe the branch-like formation that was then Hari's arm. It wasn't very apparent to the way he spoke, or moved but there was a twinkle in his eyes that was just of pure delight. Ancient magic was one of the things that interested him the most; resources were rare to come by and it wasn't easy to get to them and this time, he didn't even need to come looking.

"There isn't really any reason for me to decline; I'm quite honored that you came to see me, of all people." He hummed thoughtfully, "I would say you've made a good choice, Takahiro-kun. Normally, people would turn to training their magic; but as you've said, it's an ancient magic. You can't make too many mistakes," he said, "If I may ask, how much have you learned of this magic so far?"

Hari nodded in delight. It was nerve wracking to be around people obviously much more competent than he was, and he felt pretty bad being the clueless one in a situation. "Thank you so much for accepting me under your tutelage, Mr. Watanabe. You won't be disappointed."

When asked about his magic, he begun to explain. "Since I got them, it was only very simple life drain. I absorb everything I touch's life. Eventually, I learned to control that aspect of my magic, and it turned out it was the tree inside me's attempt of breaking out and preserving its own life. It's back to being strong again. I've been learning how it works, and it seems that I've suddenly gotten the power of Photosynthesis, Wood Shapeshifting, and Animal Communication. On the downside, my motor skills have been severely dulled."
