Mia Vesuvius

Mia felt lost. Moreso than usual.

She stood alone in one of the spiraling towers as she smoked and looked out one of the stone windows that lined the tower. Almost seemed a shame to stink up the beautiful tower with her cigarette, but it was one of the few places she found an effective hiding spot to indulge her nicotine habit on campus.

It was a beautiful campus, wasn’t it? She enjoyed looking upon it from the high towers, but other than the view she was starting to feel negative toward Starlight Academy. She barely went to any classes anymore—and when she did go, her ability to concentrate was shot. She hardly wanted to be on campus besides in her dorm room. She was struggling with authority figures within the school system.

She was also terribly lonely.

Mia let out a tired sigh as she leaned against the wall besides the small open window. A light breeze blew through the window and brushed her skirt against her thighs—not the school uniform skirt, though. It had been about…perhaps, three weeks? Perhaps three weeks since she had been to any class or had worn her school uniform.

Mia felt that she was not getting anything out of Starlight Academy—maybe she never had. Should she drop out? But what would she do then? Maybe stay on the island and find a job, she supposed. Or just aimlessly wander the world like she used to. Just get lost somewhere.

Lost. Right, she was trying to not be lost anymore. She wanted to feel at home somewhere. Starlight Academy didn’t seem to be the place. There were no connections to the school she really felt would keep her around. A few casual friends here and there, but that was about it. Most students avoided her anyway—too many rumors about her being a slut. And those who were drawn to her because of those rumors usually found themselves disappointed when she wasn’t what others claimed—and along came the rumors of her being a bitch instead.

The cigarette hung in her mouth as she continued to stare at the window. Maybe she could be a model. Were there modelling agencies on the island? Probably, right? She certainly had the good looks from her Goddess mother. Would they be bothered that she had some tattoos? Nah, they could probably just airbrush that shit out. She didn’t know. She couldn’t really think of anything else she could do besides hope that her good looks could carry her somewhere.

When her cig was nearly burnt down, Mia snuffed it out on the stone wall, tossed it on the ground, and pulled out another one to light. Was it time to call it quits on this place?

Sometimes there was no greater picture, no higher calling. Sometimes you just wanted to sit on the roof in the sun and read there. The truth was that sometimes was quite often a lot of the time when it came to Ophion. He worked primarily from primary sources, which required delicacy. He couldn't just sit out in the beating sun reading out of a four hundred year old diary. No, he had to be in a climate controlled room, specifically meant for dealing with that sort of thing.

But sometimes he got lucky, and his primary sources came in paperback form.

Today was one of those days, and Ophion had headed to the roof. Perhaps it was the snake part of him, but he just thought there was something enjoyable about lying in the sun reading a book. The fact that he was often cold didn't help things either.

Of course, he turned out to not be alone. Someone else was on the roof, and his first thought was not appropriate for someone who worked as a teacher's assistant. There was just a lot of skin showing on a body that might as well have walked out of a photo shoot.

He stopped short, trying to process for a moment before realizing she was smoking. Ah. That would explain why she was up there, although he wasn't super keen on the smell of smoke getting in his books.

"Oh, sorry." He admitted, glancing around the section of roof. Not a lot of room to hide out or get away from the smoke. "I wasn't interrupting anything, was I?"

“Oh. You caught me.”

There wasn’t a hint of remorse in Mia’s voice. In fact, she didn’t even bother to put out her cigarette—instead bringing it to her lips for another drag. It wasn’t sarcasm that tinted her voice though. It was just exhaustion. She was too tired to care that someone caught her smoking on school grounds yet again. In the past, she would at least put her cig out when she was caught—but it just seemed like too much effort right now.

She ruffled a hand through her wild red hair as she pressed her back against the stone wall. Shutting her eyes with a sigh, she started to slide down toward the ground. It was obviously Mia wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon. She just wanted to sit, and smoke, and maybe the answer to all her problems would magically appear if she sat around long enough. Because, right now, she didn’t know what to do.

Okay, that was weird. Ophion wasn't a big stickler for the rules or anything, but even he took it as a given that someone would put their cigarette out, or at least hide it. Instead she just took a drag. She didn't even seem angry at him, or challenging like she was daring him to say something about it. She seemed, if nothing else, apathetic.

His intuition was proven entirely correct when she leaned against the wall, sliding down it. She looked exhausted, and Ophion's eyebrows knitted together as he stared at her, not even trying to hide his obvious confusion.

"Are you..." He paused for a moment, second guessing his behavior, before deciding there was nothing wrong with asking. If she didn't want to talk about it, she could say so. "Alright?" He finally finished. He couldn't tell if she was just exhausted, or if there was something else going on he was missing. Maybe she was just tired. Maybe smoking did that to you. He wouldn't know.

Mia looked up from her seating position on the ground. Such ancient eyes on such a youthful face seemed mismatched. Ancient, and so so tired.

“Not really, no,” she said with a shrug as she took her cigarette from her mouth. She pulled her knees close to her chest, becoming small and closed in on herself. She rested her arm on her knees, watching momentarily as the thin smoke from her cig crawled up and dissipated in the air.

Then she looked at the man again--head tilted with a smile. A somewhat forced and painful smile.

“But why should I bother you with it, right?”

Perhaps others might have preferred to avoid the potential drama that could come with it, but Ophion was not that sort of person. So instead of running, he paused, looked her over, and then moved over to sit down beside her, back against the wall.

"Because I'm here, and I'll listen, and maybe I can help." He wasn't exactly confident in the last bit. There were a lot of problems he couldn't help with, and only a small number he could truly assist with. But he could at least listen. She was obviously upset about something, and it helped to have someone to talk to, even if you didn't know them. Sometimes it was even better if you didn't know them. Some things you just couldn't talk to the people around you about, but could talk to total strangers about.

"Names Ophion, by the way." He said, figuring a name might help a bit.

Mia placed her cigarette back in between her lips as she watched the man walk over and sit down right beside her. Then her gazed drifted away from him as she weighed her options at that particular moment.

“I’m Mia,” she said after a short silence. Then she took the cig from her mouth and mashed the tip against the cold stone ground until it was extinguished. It was only polite to put it out if a non-smoker was going to be sticking around, after all.

She hadn’t even entirely considered whether she wanted to talk to this guy or not before her words just came spilling out:

“I’m thinking of dropping out. I don’t feel like I’m accomplishing anything here.”

Mia rested her elbow against her knees and her head against her hand as she finally looked back at Ophion with her listless gaze.

“It’s been about three weeks since I last stepped foot in any of my classes. I don’t know what to do with myself, but I just don’t think I can continue trying to make something happen here that just…isn’t happening.”

Oh good. As much as Ophion was going to try and play up like it didn't bother him (because it seemed unbelievably petty to demand someone put out their cigarette after he had interrupted them), he was genuinely relieved when she put out the cigarette. The smell was just... unpleasant.

His eyes widened a bit when she confessed she was thinking of dropping out. In truth, he'd kind of expected it to be a love issue, or maybe a family dispute - not something school related. School related was... well, that was actually his thing.

"Well, what are you going to do if you do drop out?" That was probably a weird question, but the truth was that as much as Ophion liked school, he understood it wasn't for everyone. Some people would just never like school, and really get anything out of it.

"I'm not going to go all school ma'am and insist that school is the only way, because it's really not - but the biggest thing would be having some kind of goal to pursue if you do drop out. If nothing else, the school has that whole 'free food and lodging' thing going for it." Not that he particularly thought the school would put up with someone who skipped that much class.

“Ha…! No fucking clue,” Mia said, her brief laugh not one of amusement but obvious bitterness. Not toward him for asking, but toward herself. With a long sigh she pressed her forehead against her knees, only momentarily hiding her face before she tilted it to show that she was still listening.

“Hm…” the small hum escaped her as she considered what he said. He had a point—she really had nowhere to go if she did leave the school. That situation wasn’t really anything new to her, but she did find herself craving some bit of stability—even if she was failing to obtain it at the school.

“I’ve been sort of wandering aimlessly for, ah…I guess 72 years now,” she decided to share with Ophion just the extent of how long she’s been feeling the way she was feeling at that moment. “I guess I thought, you know, maybe I’d get something out of the stricter environment. Kick the wanderlust out of me a little.” Mia lifted her head slightly, resting her cheek against her palm as her elbow pressed against her knee.

“And I guess there is some desire for stability in me, but at the same time I can’t…seem to function here.” Her eyes closed as she tapped a finger against her temple. “Schedules, authority figures, bending over paperwork trying to keep track of a million subjects at once…it’s like every inch of me demands rebellion against it.”

Ophion didn't even blink when she dropped that she was more than seventy two years old. He'd grown up on the island, surrounded by the strangest of things. The idea that some of his classmates were immortal, or had come from different dimensions was not even something that bothered him. He'd just gotten used to it. Age was, in the most literal way possible, just a number.

He couldn't really understand, though. He couldn't relate. He thrived in academia. It was his home, and with how he was going, he might as well always be there.

"Well, you're a rebel. You can always consider a profession that doesn't require that kind of thing. Maybe apprentice under someone? Like, trades and stuff are always in demand. If academia isn't for you, it doesn't really seem to make sense to bend over backwards trying to fit." And she was obviously unhappy with it, if she was considering dropping out over the matter
