Smokey listened to Angelo patiently. Their first attempt at giving him advice backfired. Their second attempt at to be good or Angelo might stop trusting them. Smokey carefully considered their words, hoping to help Angelo in a more human way.

"I haven't spoken to Kon enough to know how it is with him. Um, the closest experience I had with something like that was back on Ilada. One kid was getting creative with their shape-shifting and would change a lot. Even though they were still recognizable, it was off-putting when it happened at random."

What advice could they give? Everything came to Smokey pushing Angelo to talk to Alma. An option that was so obvious Angelo had to already have considered it. Perhaps he had considered it and just wasn't certain on it yet? Smokey could use their annoying insistence to help there, right? Or perhaps he hadn't considered it at all. Humans with their inability to express their feelings and all that. Like in those awful romcoms Smokey had seen scenes of.

"I think you should tell her how you feel. Alma's from here and... you're not. She should be able to try and understand that you're still getting used to thinking like an islander here. She's a nice person. She might cut back on the shifting when around you. It's not an all or nothing type of deal. You could even talk to Iggy about it. See if he can give you support and help you talk to her. He knows her better than me."

Angelo had considered it. But like so much socially, knowing you had to talk to someone and actually talking to them felt like two totally different levels of difficulty. It was hard. It was hard to have a serious conversation. If you said 'I need to talk', they'd think you were breaking up with them. That was just how it was.

"It just... feels like it's my problem. That it's something I need to be working on, not burdening her with." It felt like he was pushing his problems onto someone else. Someone who didn't deserve it. "And I'm worried she'll be... self conscious? Her shape shifting is a good thing. More powers is better, in this case. It's just my own hang ups, and she enjoys it, and..."

Angelo trailed off, glancing guiltily to the side.

"Sorry for dumping this on you. I... know I need to talk to her. I just have to work up the nerve for it."

Smokey was about to throttle Angelo. How many times did he need to be told this? "I'm your friend," they said slowly, emphasizing each word. "And she's your girlfriend! I'd feel awful if my friend was going through a rough time and was scared to talk to me about it." Smokey gave a disappointing shake of their head and a huff.

"What I'm saying is, it's not just your problem. It's true that she might become self-conscious, but I think the alternative of you burdening yourself with a problem that doesn't need to be shared alone is worse. You just need to make it clear that what she has is a good thing and you're happy for her, but that the way she uses the power around you makes you uncomfortable because of x, y, and z, and you want her help working through it. That way it doesn't put all the work on either of you." Smokey gave a few quick nods, happy with how they delivered their speech.

"And think about it on a lesser scale. Changing your behavior slightly to accommodate a friend is normal. I like to get into people's faces and hug them, but I won't with you because I know it makes you uncomfortable. It doesn't mean you're disrespecting me or that you need to get over it. It means we're friends and we'll do small things to help each other out."

He supposed that was the dynamic, another thing that threw him off. That Smokey wouldn't think twice before dispensing advice or accepting emotional dumping. It wasn't like this was life or death. It was just discomfort. But Smokey was willing to jump on it anyway, seeming almost desperate to help him out.

Would he do the same thing? Offer advice, maybe, but be an emotional punching bag for a friends issues? Maybe. To some. But not as freely as Smokey would, and that just made him worry he was taking advantage of the trust.

Maybe that was the point.

No, that was exactly the point.

"You're right," he said, dragging his hand through his hair again. "I'll send her a message today. Ask if we can talk. ...Probably preface it with 'it's not a breakup', since that's where everyone's mind goes when you said we need to talk."

Why was that? Even he did that, but why? And did he thank them for the talk? Probably not. It seemed like it'd just bother them.

"The same goes for you," he said. "If you want to ask anything. Or get me to... change anything." What would they even ask? They'd probably just say they were happy to accommodate him however.

Smokey's face brightened dramatically. Did they go too far? Was he getting annoyed? Angry? All of those paranoid thoughts were thrown out of the window when Angelo said they were right. That he would follow their advice. Even better, he was trying to be more emotionally open! Smokey could just squeal in delight right now; hop around the room or hug Angelo in happiness. There was no reason to worry. They were useful to a friend!

Good thing they had enough self-control to not do that. Smokey just made a wide smile and nodded eagerly in response. "I don't have anything to ask from you right now, but I'll remember that. I'm just happy to be someone to support you. So if something happens during the talk and you need someone, call me up. If you want."
