Aisha picked up on the cringe and nervously chuckled back. Her hands fidgeted around. "I guess it totally isn't common to like steal from humans, let alone have the whole kingdom do it..." Calling it thievery made the princess flinch uncomfortably. This wasn't a crime at home; it was expected to take things from land dwellers. Land dwellers had access to so much food and wealth, yet the merpeople were too freaky and different to walk on land with them. She was partially surprised none of her people considered going to war with the Australians.

"But what do I do now? I'm like broke instead of rich!" She then quickly added "And I don't wanna do anything super illegal like I would at home but it's like legal there!" The mermaid was honestly trying her best to follow the rules and be a good girl. It was just hard with the very foundation of her childhood lessons being "be a total selfish fish and never serve anyone else".

"It's more common then you'd expect," Valli said. "For small, isolated communities, their options are sadly limited. Surrounded on all sides by human, most invoke veil-like systems largely out of self-protection. Drawing the attention of so many humans is a poor survival strategy. But at the same time, humans have so many things that small communities couldn't manage to produce."

He smiled despite himself when she hastily added that she didn't want to do anything 'super' illegal.

"You speak to a professional. To an expert on the matter. The school has resources, and there's no shame in asking for help."

"I still have to get, like, used to that...." The cheerleader sheepishly admitted. At least she was (somewhat) doing the right thing in some regards. This could've been a lot worse, but it was not. She smiled back at Valli, appearing more relaxed about her predicament. He actually had a certain appeal to him. He probably wouldn't want to take an underaged student out for drinks though. Well, for the best really. "Our floodplains, like, has had a lot of stuff get twisted or like messed up thanks to the incident. Really my people could use, like, more resources than what exists."

A sigh escaped the princess. "But right now everyone is like killing each other to steal instead of working together. I feel more and more like that's wrong. It's just totally not practical! Almost wish they...." She furrowed her brow at the next words and cut off. Was she actually wishing for her people to be here? To live in Manta Carlos? That could easily turn into a disaster. Such violent tendencies and immorality.....but then...

Wasn't that her not too long ago? Suddenly guilt hit her. She hadn't given any of them a chance. This place, with its size and resources, could potentially support them and alter their ways. Make them into less of an unruly source of entertainment for her lazy, no-good rulers of parents.

"I...want to straighten myself out, but do you think my...my people could live here?"

Aisha had a lot of strikes against her hypothetical, the most important of which that Valli would have sawed his own arm off before he'd dated a patient. It was approximately fifty kinds of inappropriate, and he was very careful with his professional boundaries. Even friendships were more or less out of line, because it violated that fundamental patient-doctor boundary that he worked so hard to enforce. It had left him with a sorely lacking social circle once upon a time, but since then he'd adjusted. Gotten out more. Met new people.

"I think it's possible," Valli said. "The island does have outreach programs for small groups and communities that have unsustainable living situations. From what you've said, it sounds like the entire group is in serious danger of breaking the veil, and that it's only a matter of time before they're discovered. It's something you could talk to the scouts about, and see what could be done. While it's important to handle your own issues first, it might be a productive way to spend your time. Helping others can help you feel good in turn."

Aisha found herself at ease with the affirmation. Her people could have a home here. Perhaps this is what she needed to bring change for the kingdom. Not simply running up and murdering her parents, but instead coming back with the offer of more resources and safety. Little did the girl realize that she was beginning to act more and more like a proper ruler. Well, a proper benevolent ruler that is.

"I'll totally have to talk to the scouts then!" She chimed happily. "Aaand....um, like who do I talk to about like....money?" She didn't really know where she could get financial education. At least not the specific location on campus or the people she was looking for. Considering where they were, it probably wasn't far, but it was probably better to ask than get lost.

He'd been worried about her for a bit, but it seemed like she was quick to bounce back. She had plans and goals in mind, and he nodded after a moment.

"You'd speak to the school counselors," he said. "They'll have resources for learning to manage money, and they'll also be able to help you get... things in order, as far as housing goes." To get her moved into the dorms, most likely, but also to get her out of whatever contract she might have signed without realizing it.

"I think this is probably a good place to stop for the day. You've got a lot ahead of you, and I think we've made some good progress." He always had to be wary about overloading people with things, burying them under all the stuff they had to do until they felt overwhelmed. Breaking it up into bite sized chunks took longer, but it kept things more consistent as well.

Aisha nodded in agreement. "Yeah. I'm totally ready to get to work!" Ah, there was that cheerleader pride kicking in. Now that the mean streak underneath it was gone, it was clear that she was a truly enthusiastic girl that was misled down some unfortunate paths. With more work, perhaps her better qualities would shine more.

She bounced up off of the couch. "I'll be seeing you again soon! With better news, hopefully!" Her next stop would be the counselors. After that, the scouts. The girl had big tasks ahead of her, but she awaited Valli's response before she ran off. This was certainly going to be a busy set of days ahead....

"I look forward to it," Valli said with a smile, pushing himself upright. "Hopefully everything goes well with both parties." The scouts and the school. At least one of them he was confident would do just fine, but the scouts...

Well, that might be harder.

"Check in when you're ready for another session, and we can talk about how things went."

He tidied things up before seeing her out, returning to his desk to note down what had happened and what they'd discussed for next time.
