The cages, it seemed, were actually quite thin. The metal would be able to hold a regular person perhaps, but there were plenty of supernatural creatures on the island that would make short work of them. The runes appeared to alleviate this. Alice, with her studies, would be able to identify them as part of a basic strengthening spell, design to reinforce the metal. They all appeared to be linked, each one drawing its power from a central magic circle near the corner of the room.
They appeared new, like someone had applied them recently.
Peering through the transparent screens on each cage would reveal the source of the rumoured noises.
The smallest cage was the closest to the entrance, and after looking inside, Alice would see the large, scaled covered form of a velociraptor. Chains and shackles bolted to the ground and walls of the cage were wrapped around its powerful limbs, holding it in place, while a metallic muzzle kept its maw closed. The same runes were drawn over the chains, likely to make sure the beast was properly restrained.
What was stranger, however, were the sections of scales missing from its body, loose, grey muscle and sinew were visible, along its leg, it's tail. Even parts of its skeleton were visible on its torso. But there was no blood.
Its eyes, however, were wide open, and they stared back at Alice, almost like the creature was in pain.
The other cages held other dinosaurs in similar condition, totalling 10 overall. The largest was so big that it appeared to be squashed in its cage; looking into its screen only revealed one reptilian eye pressed against it, staring out.
The smell was particularly strong coming from them all.
