Shul knew he stepped on a landmine, but he couldn't stop himself in time. And he wasn't wrong. Shul had much less pride than the others, or at least his didn't get hurt as easily. Shul wanted to prioritize safety and not deny himself or Thiul or anyone the right to worry. But even so as Fweiu set a hand on his shoulder as a sign for Shul to stop talking Shul obliged, looking aside for a brief moment with a small huff of frustration. But soon enough Shul looked back at Liun with a defeated smile on his face, and he set his hands on his hips.
"I guess I can't let my honorary brother in a pickle when he so humbly asks."
Shul chuckled, if Fweiu insisted they were the experts then why not jokingly flex that expertise. Shul didn't take any particular pride in his partial shifting, it was just something he had always been able to do but only recently had he mastered it.

"I'm a teacher, so teaching you this should be a piece of cake. And Fweiu can be my teacher's assistant."
Shul grinned up at his sister, and then looked at Liun with a determined expression.
"The first step is to choose which part of your body you wish to shift. I recommend your arm, it's easy to visualize and a large enough area so it's not hard to concentrate on."

"Alright, professor." Fweiu would, for the most part, step back and let Shul handle the teaching. This was tolerable. She didn't like it, since she was sure that she could teach this herself. But she supposed Shul had more formal training in education.

"Arms are a great place to start," Fweiu agreed. "Once we get you going, I know an excellent training drill." It was one of her favorite drills, in fact: the one where she threw a punch at something hard with her human hand, and she had to shift mid punch or it would hurt.

Maybe Liun had watched her doing this out the window, breaking chunks of ice. Maybe he knew what was coming.

Fweiu had a useful tip to offer, if she had the chance: "One thing that helped me starting out was focusing on my claws. You can move them like human fingers, but they also have differences you can focus on." She had other tips as well, and would offer them freely.

Liun listened to both of his cousins with a keen look in his eyes. Partial shifting had been a goal of his for his entire life, since his mother so deeply specialised in the skill. "Arm. Gotcha." He nodded, but he somewhat spoke like he was confirming it with himself.

In a way, this method reminded him of when he was younger. Probably in the days he adamantly attempted to fight older dragons, then getting royally beaten. The first iteration of his armour was only the gauntlets, and he recalled how he intently stared at his arms as he attempted to form the armour, to start to grow it. This recollection actually gave him a good mental image for him to use.

He nodded again as he somewhat mentally prepared himself. "Alright, yeah, I've got an image in my head. Arm makes sense." The way he spoke almost sounded like he was stalling. In a way he was. A part of him felt so hesitant to do this, since it wouldn't be the first. The first time he partial shifted was while he was captured. When he was forced to. There could also be the chance he couldn't partially shift, that perhaps the same thing that blocked his regular shifting would also block partial shifting. He shook his head briefly as he cleared the doubts from his head. Liun had to be optimistic.

With that, Liun put his arm out and focused on it. He attempted to picture it shifting, or at least for claws to form, but he struggled with the image. What would him partial shifting even look like? That thought just completely evaded his mind. Eventually he dropped his arm with a huff. "I'm not getting anything..." There was a disappointment and resignation in his voice that felt uncharacteristic. Usually he wouldn't be one who seemed to give up so easily, but with this he already looked like he was willing to say it had failed.

"Hey, I'm just kidding, don't leave me on my own. Although I'm really touched by your trust."
Shul said with a smile when Fweiu stepped back, pulling her right back over. He might've been a teacher but Fweiu was overall older and had more experience in shifting, even if Shul had been able to partial shift for longer.

As Shul observed Liun partial shift he wasn't sure what he was expecting. Maybe he was trying not to expect anything. But nevertheless he wasn't surprised when Liun didn't succeed on the first try. What did surprise Shul was that after this one failed attempt Liun seemed like there was no more hope and that he should give up. Or something along those lines, it was the tone of his voice. Shul stepped over and patted Liun on the shoulder.
"It's not the end of the world, you can't expect this to go entirely smoothly after what you've been through."
Shul tapped into his teacher mode and his tone was encouraging but at the same time not too lax.
"Just give it time. Heck, when I first partial shifted I freaked out and after that couldn't do it at all for months, even if I tried. So relax, and just let it come to you."
Shul glanced over at Fweiu for support and so she would give her own advice. Shul was first and foremost about feelings and emotional support and he knew that. And he was counting on Fweiu for a healthy dose of reality.

You can't accuse Fweiu of not feeling sympathy for her cousin. She truly did. She knew Liun was hurting. It absolutely stabbed her in the heart to see him give up like that. But Fweiu was not the kind of beast who responded to such injuries by whimpering and slinking away. They made her angrier.

Fweiu walked up to him and grabbed the back of his neck, her nails digging in just the slightest bit and steering his head to look up at her. The way her teacher had done with her, when she needed a swift kick in the ass. "You. Are. NOT. Giving up like this. You know what it is to struggle for your strength, Liun. You are one of the best people with a spear on this planet. And you cannot have forgotten what it was like to gain your human form the first time. Did you give up, because you couldn't figure it out the first time? Did you quit, and resign yourself to remain in that form for the rest of your life, secluded in our hatching-nest until you froze over?"

She shoved him backwards. Injuries be damned, and labs be blasted. She wanted him to get angry, and for the anger to sharpen him. "It may take time, like Shul said. Or it may be gone forever. But the surest way to see it gone forever is to roll over and give up on it, and I will not allow you to do that. The blood flowing through our veins would rise up in revolt against you. They did not take your name from you, Liun. You are still a Rukt'In."

A lot of emotions would go through Liun's head in a very rapid amount of time, largely because of his two cousins' words of... encouragement. At first, he immediately felt guilt and frustration at how quickly he gave up. Even he felt a little ashamed at it, since he did want to partial shift. It had been his dream since he knew what it was.

First, it was Shul. Being told about his own experience, reassurance. It made Liun feel a bit less like it was hopeless... not getting it right was normal. That had to be what he told himself. Liun smiled a little at Shul, an appreciative look on his face. "Thank Shul, I just-" But Liun couldn't finish the sentence before Fweiu grabbed the back of his neck. It was a familiar motion, since they were all taught by Wera. The appreciation and reassurance he felt because of Shul quickly changed to anger, determination, and pride.

At being shoved, he staggered a little to keep his balance and stop himself from falling over. His eyes had a look to them almost like a new fire had been lit. He wouldn't give up anymore. Wordlessly, he put his arm out again and focused on his hand. Despite the fact he currently felt pretty wound up, he attempted to tune everything out. His eyes kept on his hand, and a part of his focus slipped to his own breathing.

Eventually, he closed his eyes, but kept his arm out. Liun had no idea what partial shifting for him could look like, so he stopped trying to envision it like that. Instead, he just attempted to recall what shifting in general felt like. Minutes passed, Liun just stood there with his arm out and his eyes closed, his face having shifted to a concentrated frown. But eventually, Liun suddenly winced and opened his eyes to look at his hand. A part of him thought what he just felt was his imagination, and that he wouldn't see anything. But instead, he saw that his hand now had claws. His eyes widened and he looked between his hand and his cousins repeatedly.

Yup, this combination of kindness and tough love really had worked wonders. Shul sent a small grin at Fweiu, as Liun closed his eyes and begun concentrating, relaying his thanks at her. Shul really sucked at being all tough and harsh. He could be strict and brutally honest, but going all drill sergeant on Liun would've been more amusing than convincing.

Shul observed quietly as Liun took his time shifting, as he should do. This was going to be a long and grueling path for him, and Shul wanted to be there on as many steps of the way as he could. There were some steps he had to take on his own, with his own strength. And this was one of them. Neither Shul or Fweiu could do the partial shifting for him.

Shul and Fweiu saw Liun hand shift before he did, and a wide victorious smile rose to his face. He looked at Fweiu with a happy expression and then back at Liun, who had now also seen his arm. And when he just looked at his arm and then at Shul and Fweiu Shul began laughing. He went over to Liun and put an arm around his shoulders.
"There we go! Great job Liun, you just partial shifted for the first time!"
Shul gave his shoulder a squeeze, grinning, and then stepped back with his arms crossed.
"And now you just need to start working towards being able to do that within a second or faster."
