Adelyn Moonlight

There was so much to do at Starlight Academy that Adelyn’s head was spinning.

Tonight, she was going to meet her new roommate in her new temporary home! Tomorrow, she was going to check out as many clubs as she could possibly go to! And then she was going to learn all about this whole ‘school’ thing, which was great, because she loved to learn!

Oh, but first, she had to make a good impression on the person she would be living with. She knew her name—Sierra! But she didn’t know anything else about the other girl. It was kind of weird to Adelyn to just suddenly start living with a total stranger after living in a clan full of the same people here whole life—but it would be fine, right?

Adelyn came upon the door with the number on a sheet of paper she had written. This had to be the place, right? It had to be! So she tried the doorknob, but it was locked. So, her roommate must already be in there, right?

“Hellooooo?” Adelyn called out. She almost started clawing at the door like a puppy, but then she remembered that knocking was the proper etiquette. At least, she was pretty sure it was?

“My name is Adelyn! I’m your new roommate!” Adelyn said, so eager to introduce herself that she didn’t even wait for the door to open.

Sierra had barely spent a week or so in this place, and she was already fairly accustomed. She'd been shown around the academy, brought around the islands, having seen what was out there to see, so it was probably for the best she got some rest. The next day brought her the opportunity to showcase herself to the academy, and to offer her artistic and performing talents to the most promising club for her.

Plus, it was already fairly late. She wasn't one to sleep late playing computer games, for a variety of reasons. First, that it would wreck her sleep cycle. Second, that it would spoil her carefully-manicured personal image if she were spotted with any signs of lethargy. Third, that she was a heavy sleeper. Imagine her sleep just like a flight on a plane. In a flight, you get from point A to point B in one single trip that's long in duration and spanning a far distance. If it gets interrupted midway, the plane crashes and the trip you wanted to take in that flight gets cut short horribly violently. Same goes for her sleep. Loud noises were her engine blowouts.

So the loud and incessant knocking right when she was about to enter her night-long beauty sleep threw a giant 'fuck you' wrench into the works. Granted, her dorm was fairly empty other than for her own personal effects, and she was told to expect a roommate in the near future...

But this, in the middle of the night, being a continuous blaring off-tune drum beat right into her eardrums...

"もういやだ!!"

Sierra was about to launch into a tirade of Japanese abuse from behind the door but realised two things. 1) That the girl behind the door was probably just happy to be a roommate, and 2) that the girl behind the door probably wouldn't understand whatever the fuck she was saying.

What else could she do, other than to grudgingly open the door, her eyes almost sealed shut from the lethargy, and let the girl in. After all, the staff did say to expect someone by the name of Adelyn in.

In an obviously horribly lethargic and half-hearted gesture of hospitality she nodded and replied a simple "シエラです。よろしく。"

She then realised she spoke mainly Japanese when she was sleepy. A courtesy translation was in order. "Sierra. Make yourself at home," rubbing her sleepy strained eyes and massaging her temples before crashing back into bed.

She had a feeling this was going to be one long night.

“Yoroshiku…?” Adelyn repeated the foreign word to herself curiously, wondering if it was something she should know. But soon her ears perked up when Sierra corrected herself and spoke in English.

“Oh, thank you!” Adelyn said as she stepped into the room—no luggage in her hands but simply a backpack with a few basic necessities that she had been sent off with. She suddenly clasped Sierra’s hands in her own.

“I hope we can be good friends!” Adelyn said, her fluffy tail wagging before she let go and went over to the bed that was still made.

“This one must be mine, right?” she said as she put her backpack down on it. Then she whirled around with an obvious excited energy that she still couldn’t quite shake off. It was a day of so many firsts—first ride on an airplane, first time in a school, first time living with a…human?? Was Sierra a human? Or something else that looked human?

“Are you a human?” she suddenly blurted out, but then frowned a bit. “Wait, is that rude to ask? I hope it isn’t! I’m sorry if it is!”

Sierra felt the onset of a splitting headache coming for the morning after. She was this close to just collapsing on the floor into the deepest sleep of her life, and Sierra's own appraisal of the situation would involve the new person being hyper enough to shake Sierra to death.

She desperately prayed to whatever greater existence was out there to absolve her of her sins - the sins that brought her this visibly somewhat lupine hyper cracknugget into her room. She was willing to be paid back her misdemeanours, but not like this.

Being the 'ordinary' roommate of the two Sierra would do well to lay down some ground and house rules to stop this shit from happening again, but she lacked the state of mind and body to pull herself through. The next day would be when she would set the record straight, but that day could not come fast enough.

"Mhm, friends..." Sierra mumbled, obviously already this close to sleep. If it wasn't a mumble, then it was slurred speech and shitty grammar. "Yes, bed there is yours, I'm human, good night..."

Sierra crashed face first into her pillow and attempted to sleep as soundly as the fucked-up reality would dictate.

“Oh!” Adelyn let out a little gasp when Sierra suddenly slammed right into her bed. Was she really so tired? It wasn’t that late at all, at least according to Adelyn—but humans had different sleeping patterns, didn’t they? Adelyn was going to have to adjust to that.

But Adelyn had to admit she was a little disappointed. She would have liked to have learned more about her roommate, but that would not be happening tonight.

Should she try to sleep? Adelyn still had so much energy though. Maybe she could go wander around the school grounds for a while? Wait, was that allowed? Didn’t students have to stay in their dorm after a certain time? She couldn’t recall if that was a rule or not…

So instead, Adelyn plopped herself down on her new bed. Above her bed was a window, which she decided to open up and stick her head out of. A cold breeze wafted through as Adelyn’s ears perked up to hear the new sounds of her new home. It was so different. It was so weird to not hear her clan howling in the distance. There was no howling at all. She really was in a very, very different place.

With her roommate just wanting to sleep and no howling outside, a sense of loneliness was starting to set in. But it wouldn't stay that way, right?
