Vampires 101

Van Thurstman sat on a bench just outside the school entrance, his old copy of Van Hellsings journal in his hands. People often asked if he was connected to the legendary vampire hunter because of their shared first name, of course that wasn't true, he predated Hellsings by a long time.

He flipped the page, Hellsing was a brilliant man, but he was bogged down by superstition. He looked up to wink at passing attractive women, she turned away blushing deeply. Ah yes, he'd lived nearly 600 years, and his charm was effective as ever.

Shay was on time, as she tried to be at all times. Lately, she had been taking more interest in her academic life. She'd gone up a whole grade average the harder she tried and with some time, she'd be an honors student. Shay was smart enough for it. It wasn't a lack of intelligence as much as it had been a lack of interest.

She caught up to her private tutor just as he was winking at a woman. Shay couldn't help but role her eyes. She had a particular distaste for open flirtation, surprising, seeing as the family she came from was all about that.

"I'm here, Mr. Thurstan."

Van smiled, "hello Ms. Rosales, it's good to see you." He took a sip of cinnamon blood from a vial, his old friend Simeon Bludd had been providing him with blood. "Please take a seat and we'll begin."

"So my dear, sense this lesson is outside my class I think we should start with some question you might have." He set his book down, "and before you offer dear..I won't take a cent for this, I came here to mentor young the young."

He brushed his long hair out of his face, his hair had taken an odd purple hair when he was turned, "tell me dear, what do you want to know first?"

Shay didn't hesitate to sit next to the vampire. She wasn't made nervous by predators or creatures that went bump in the night, if anything, she was drawn to them.

"First thing is first; I'd prefer you just called me Shay rather than 'dear' or anything like that." Then Shay became a little more bashful. She wanted to know everything; it was hard to pick just one question.

She didn't bother fighting with him about not taking extra money for private sessions. She only shrugged lightly and gave a quiet, "Okay. If you say so, sir.

"What defines a bloodline? How are they created? If you chance someone, are they part of your bloodline or their own?"

Van smiled, he hadn't known Shay long, but from what he could tell she was sharp, she'll grow up to be very intelligent, "a blood line is essentially a type of vampire, and yes if your bitten by a vampire you will become that kind of vampire."

He set his book aside, "the current bloodlines have, as far as I can tell, existed as long as the vampire race has." He took a sip of his blood laced coffee, "there has been talk of new vampire lines being created via breeding between members of different lines, but it'll take a long time to see if new bloodlines will be created."

There has been reports of vampires taking on abilities not associated with the vampire that turned them...mutation possibly, supernatural or not we are beings with unique DNA." This is while interesting, it also troubled Van a bit, vampires developing unforseen abilities. The transition was difficult enough without mutations

"Yeah, I heard about vampires breeding." Shay giggled a little here, but quickly straightened up and spoke solemnly as she had been before. "There are the types that are born and the types that are made, yeah? Were you born or made? Can you have children?"

Shay considered the possibility of mutations. "Interesting. I guess to find out you'd have to know what the ritual for changing them was? Like was it just a bite or did they have to kill someone or what? That could have made it, so they got unique abilities."
