Name: Theodora Katsoufis
Nickname: Dora
Age: 12
Birthday: October 30
Gender: Female
Species: Demigod
Category: Student
Class: Elementary
Grade: Grade 6
Nationality: Greek
Appearance Description:
There is a kind of fragility to Theodora - she appears delicate and feminine, like a porcelain doll. Standing at 4'5", she is petite and waifish, with the barest hint of curves. Her Greek heritage shows in her lightly tanned skin, expressive brown eyes, and straight chocolate-brown hair, which hangs down to her chest when left loose.
Her face and body are often marked with bruises and cuts, but for some reason, they seem to suit her. As if she was made to be hurt. Dora tends to appear sad and lost, curling in on herself and shying away from people. Even when she is happy, her smiles are small and quick. She has a soft, lilting voice with a prominent Greek accent.
Dora doesn't really dress up and prefers soft, comfortable clothes in neutral colours. She will often wear a fluffy scarf even in the summer, just so she can rub it against her face for comfort.
Personality Description:
A creature of grief and plagued by troubles - Dora has a limited capacity for happiness and clings to whatever comfort she can get. She's timid and shy, very careful around people, but also not afraid - she's so used to being hurt. She doesn't trust anyone at all - she knows that people are going to leave or be taken away, but she'll still wear her heart on her sleeve because that's just the way things are.
She struggles with urges to hurt people because she is addicted to the feeling of their pain. And the hurt child part of her doesn't want to see anyone else happy. But she's also gentle, a shoulder to cry on. She encourages others to share their sorrows and express themselves. She's most uncomfortable around bubbly, perky, happy types.
Active Abilities:
Healing Tears - Her tears can nearly instantly heal minor wounds/cuts when applied to them, but leave a scar that is sensitive to pain. Drinking her tears can clear up cold/flu symptoms, but causes a headache that will last a couple hours.
Healing with a Price - If she is touching a wound and concentrates, she can heal larger injuries, taking them onto herself. She could heal a large gash in minutes and even regenerate limbs in an hour. But this would cause her a great deal of pain, and she would not be able to regenerate the wounds she caused herself with this ability for an hour after she stopped using it, no matter what size of wound she healed. This also comes at a cost. It takes some life force from the healed, making them less resistant to illness, increasing the strain of internal injuries, and tiring/weakening them for as long as it took her to heal them. Depending on how strong they are, this could be fatal. It also causes a feeling of depression, a gnawing sadness that will last throughout the healing and continue for an hour for each minute spent healing.
Let me ease your pain - She can remove people's grief and sadness, but this numbs their ability to feel any emotion at all. The more often she does this, the longer it will take for any emotion at all to return and it takes even longer for a person to be able to feel happiness again. She can do this for 15 minutes at a time with 15 minutes rest. The first time she did this it would take however many minutes she did it for to recover any emotion, twice as long to recover happiness. The recovery time increases exponentially each time she does this on the same person, so repeated use of this ability on someone could potentially permanently emotionally damage a person.
Misery Loves Company - If she concentrates, she can spread her negative empathy to everyone within 5', but must spread it among everyone. This both increases the feelings by combining them and eases the pain of them with the sharing. At the moment she can only do this for about a minute with 10 or more people up to about half an hour with just one other person. The more people within the area of effect the more she has to rest before she uses this ability again.
Passive Abilities:
Negative Empathy - Limited empathy that causes her to feel any negative emotions (sadness, grief, despair) that are being felt within 10' of her. She cannot turn this off.
Aura (pain and grief)
- Within 25' this aura encourages people to cry if they are already feeling things like frustration, grief, or pain. This only affects beings that are physically able to produce tears. It affects people even if crying is not their usual response, but doesn't make people sad when they aren't.
- Within 10' the aura doubles any sensation of physical pain whether caused by injury or illness. Does not increase pain caused by magical/mental abilities unless they have a physical effect. Does not cause pain itself or affect beings that cannot feel pain. Only affects the sensation (ex: a being that usually felt half the pain of a normal human would feel it normally). Effect immediately vanishes when out of range.
- Within 5' dulls positive emotion - emotions such as happiness have less effect on a person. Effect immediately vanishes out of range.
- Within 5' Brings back traumatic memories - If a person has recently, within the week, been traumatized/feeling strong distress/grief, then the memories of what caused those feelings will rise to the surface. They are only memories, not flashbacks. And they will only affect the person as much as any memory would. Out of range, the memories will vanish as quickly as memories generally vanish, although not necessarily immediately if they are being dwelt on.
Schadenfreude (Pain is a drug) - Within 10' Dora can sense others' physical pain. This affects the girl like a drug, a highly addictive drug. It scatters her thoughts - making her almost hyperactive and agitated. It makes her want to cause more pain just for the rush. Even though it doesn't really make her feel good, it gets her wired. The more pain she is sensing, the more she craves it and doesn't want the feeling to stop.
Demigod - Immortal/ageless/stops aging at 16. Can only be permanently damaged by weapons/magic designed to injure gods. Painful regeneration. Can be affected by disease or poison, but won't kill her. Variable healing speed, but regenerates from everything fully (Doesn't scar, have permanent loss of function, or heal bones incorrectly). Cannot faint from pain. Heals in seconds from wounds that affect sight or hearing. Regenerates rapidly from loss of limbs - minutes to regrow an arm. Heals from broken bones and illness twice as fast as a human. Heals from internal injuries at the same rate as a human. External injuries such as bruises and cuts take twice as long to heal. Requires food/water and sleep, but has numerous allergies/sensitivities and insomnia.
Weaknesses:
Revenge of Eris - Her body's backlash against the nullification bracelet, while she's wearing it, she can't speak out loud unless she's crying. Her emotions become dull and flat. And her head aches like she's dehydrated.
Aura (make her cry) - Any sentient being that sees Theodora will have the urge to see her tears, either by making her sad or by physically hurting her. This is only active when she's not crying and is stronger when she's happy. It is not a compulsion and can be resisted. Though the urge disappears when she's crying, something about her tears seems right, like a piece of the world that was wrong has been righted.
Sensitive to pain and bruises easily.
Common Magical Items:
Nullification Bracelet - This nullification bracelet naturally disables all of a characters active abilities, and any outwardly projecting passive abilities (such as auras). This bracelet can be taken on and off at will.
Biography:
Theodora is a grandchild of the Algea, daughters of Eris, and the child of two demigods. Her father was a child of Lupe (pain, grief, and distress), her mother a child of Ania (grief, distress, sorrow, and trouble). So far as she knows both her grandfathers were human.
Dora's parents were part of a game the Algea were playing, as is Dora herself. They thought they were alone until they found each other and married. They had both been plagued by trouble and sorrow but were unaware of their nature. Her father was a cruel, abusive man and her mother battered and overly dependent.
Theodora was an accidental, unwanted child, born only because her mother's birth control failed and somewhat miraculous born healthy and unscathed in spite of her mother's heavy drinking. Her father pushed for an abortion, but her mother kept her thinking maybe she could bring the joy that was lacking.
Her mother was wrong.
Dora was troubled from the moment she was born, a cryer, often inexplicably cranky. She did terribly in school, couldn't seem to find a place to fit in. Her home life was a mess and she was always getting bullied at school or getting in trouble for being the bully herself.
Around the time she turned 10, her mother finally had enough and ran off with another man, leaving her to be raised by her abusive father. Because she already got in so many fights, people didn't notice an extra bruise or two, and her aura made it harder to be concerned about her.
Her father quickly found another woman, who was as messed up as her mother, almost, but in a different way. This woman loved Theodora, she had lost her own child and bonded with Dora right away. She was also affected by the girl's aura, but she made her cry by sharing sad stories and opening up instead of hurting her like her father or neglecting her like her mother. For once the girl had found someone she could genuinely love.
She still had troubles, but this new woman seemed to be able to settle her father more than her mother had. She protected Dora from the worst of it.
Then came the car accident. Her father was at work, and the woman was driving Dora to school when it happened. Theodora panicked, pain overwhelming her, making her ignore her own injuries. She didn't know what she was doing when she attempted to heal the woman, but she already felt enough pain that it barely made much difference to her. She could see her step-mother's wounds closing. They weren't deep, but they seemed scary to the girl. She could save her! Except - it didn't work. The trauma and the effects of the little demigod's healing weakened her so much her heart stopped. And by the time the ambulances came, it was too late. She died in Dora's arms.
The girl had lost the only person who had ever loved her. It was a small mercy that she only believed that she hadn't saved her and didn't realize she was the one who caused her death.
Both of them were taken to the hospital. A doctor there suspected something was strange when Dora's step-mother was free of injury, but Dora was covered in wounds. She was contacted by a scout not long after she returned home. Theodora accepted readily eager to escape her father's grief and abuse and her own sorrow.
