The sun was beginning to set on another fine summer day as the boat
finally landed at the docks to deposit its passenger. James White stepped
off the boat, carrying his bag, and taking in a deep breath of the island
air. He sighed as he looked up the hill towards where the Academy sat.
Yep, it was exactly like the pamphlet described. A place where those
who didn't fit in to "normal" society could come and not be judged for
what made him or her stand out. He scoffed at the thought. Normal...yeah, right. As if you could define something like that. Everybody had something that set them apart from each other, whether they acknowledged it or not.
No. His reasons for coming here were different. He knew one way or another that no matter what he did, no matter how hard he tried, one way or another his secret would eventually be revealed. Once that happened, his family would never know peace, so for their sake he came here to this school. To protect those most important to him.
He started his trek up towards the school, stopping long enough to glance back at the shadows of the trees, "I know you're there. No need to play hide and seek with me. You know that."
From out of the dark slithered a pair of black puddles which formed up into small humanoid creatures no taller than his knee with four eyes and horns growing out of their heads. James smiled and bent down to pat them, "You guys came to keep an eye on me, didn't ya?" They nodded enthusiastically, causing him to chuckle, "Alright, alright.
Come on, but stay close. We want to make a good first impression after all, right?"
He turned and walked off while the shadow creatures slithered to follow their master towards his new home...
