Dorian wanted to protest, but he also wasn't sure what Zare meant by causing trouble. It didn't sound like a threat, like he would go out of his way to be antagonistic or anything. "I mean, I kinda caused trouble when I beat Joseph. Brought everyone here."

He paused, then clarified, "Well not everyone. Some of the older pack members didn't want to leave. They're too built up in their businesses and their whole... thing to want to give that up. But maybe that caused even more trouble. I don't know. I have no idea what I'm even doing," he admitted, cringing at this being the first time he'd said that to anyone in the pack.

He shifted slightly, deciding to look more directly at Zare. Not in the eye, he wasn't challenging him. "That said, I guess I get what you mean. Like I said, I'm not going to force you to be part of this whole... thing. But you're still welcome to if you want. And if you ever need anything, I'll try to see personally to helping you out."

Zare Blakesley

Zare wasn't surprised. Many of the pack he'd tried to deal with had been dinosaurs even in his own day. The fact that they'd choose to face a slow slide to mundaneness in the narrow reality didn't surprise him even slightly.

But he was genuinely caught off guard by Dorian's admission that he didn't know what he was doing, his head cocking every so slightly as he looked him over.

"Then why did you take it?" He asked. "Why not just let someone else handle it?" He didn't understand, but he very much wanted to, and that was really going to change how he thought of the Blakes and their new leader.

Dorian's expression changed to one of confusion when Zare asked his question. It seemed obvious to him, but he realized that it might not be to one of... whatever Zare was. He gave a shrug and explained it as best as he could, "No one else was going to stand up to him. Things have... gotten really bad out in the Narrow Reality lately."

"Almost all of the adults are just ignoring the problems, telling us we're overreacting to stuff like global warming. But they don't have to live within the consequences; we do. So... I just figured if none of the adults in the pack were going to tell Joseph he was being a short sighted prick..."

Another shrug. Dorian realized now it probably sounded silly. He wasn't embarrassed by it, but he was reminded that he had made a really big decision for himself and his whole family on basically a whim. He wondered how many of them secretly resented him for it.

Zare Blakesley

Zare, to a certain extent, simply didn't get it. The mentality behind Dorian's actions was a largely selfless one, and Zare was... not that. It came from being from a species that was so distinctly solitary: the desire to help others (even in addition to ones self) wasn't there naturally.

"I see," he said, having learned that if he said anything to that effect people would assume he was thinking deeply about what he'd just heard. "That still does mean you're very strong, though."

He considered a moment longer, and then shrugged, an action that looked very strange on his clearly inhuman frame.

"You don't know anything about my history, and yet you're still willing to accept me," Zare said. "Which strikes me as a risk."

Dorian kind of brushed aside the compliment, at least he thought it was a compliment, with a small wave of his hand. "Nah I'm not that strong. I mostly outsmarted him, honestly. I'm good at, uh, abstract thinking. Spatial awareness. That sort of thing. He actually did a real number on me... I didn't have any scars before that fight."

Realizing he had talked past Zare, Dorian doubled back and thought about the next thing that he said. Again, he shrugged. He seemed to be doing that a lot more than normal today. "Everything's a risk, ya know? It's kinda obvious you got sent here for a similar reason to Robert. Kinda hard to hide you when you're so... big. But we're stronger together than we are apart. Two of us can accomplish more than any of us on our own."

Zare Blakesley

"I was sent here because my people didn't want me," Zare clarified. He supposed he couldn't really blame Dorian. Any records of his existence were gone, which meant any record of the attempt by the venomaws to integrate was gone as well. There was simply no way he could have known, and Zare raised one particularly large paw, gesturing casually as he explained.

"My people aren't social creatures. We don't talk with each other or interact much at all. But when the wolves approached us to attempt to come together, it was considered. When I almost died, the decision was made to change me and see if it would improve us as a species."

Zare bared his teeth, showing his prominent canines. It wasn't as if Dorian knew what a venomaw mouth was supposed to look like, but the teeth did look particularly large.

"It didn't," he finished. "We gained nothing from the exchange, so the other venomaw withdrew, and I was sent here to avoid the embarrassment of such a significant political failure."

Dorian absorbed everything that Zare was saying, trying to paint a picture of the situation in his head. A supernatural community being brought into the family. It made... sense, in a way? But in other ways it didn't.

He nodded slowly, chewing on the inside of his cheek as he took all of it in. He briefly looked at Zare's teeth, feeling a chill run up his spine. He was, to put it bluntly, monstrous. And Dorian immediately felt ashamed for thinking that.

He didn't know what else to say though, having spent what he felt was far too long just thinking. So he just said the first thing that came to mind. "Well that sucks. I can't undo the past. I dunno if you even want to associate with us."

He felt stupid for even coming here, and though he was in human form you could practically see his ears flatten against his head. He wasn't Alpha material and this was just doing more to prove it to him.

"I'm sorry. I really am. I wish you hadn't had all that happen to you."

Zare Blakesley

Was he being too harsh? Maybe. Someone else probably would have said definitely, but Zare wasn't exactly in the business of pretending to play nice. He simply acted as he always did and let things work themselves out, and really... well, what else could he do?

"You misunderstand," he said. "I just wanted you to know. It seemed like a bad idea for you to do anything without knowing what you were getting into."

He reached out, paw facing up towards the ceiling, and spreads his hand out. A gesture of peace. Of openness. Certainly not combative by any metric.

"I'll take you up on your offer."

Simple as that.

Dorian practically lit up, his metaphorical tail wagging at Zare's agreement to join... or rejoin, he guessed... the family. He smiled over at his... cousin? Eh... packmate worked well enough and didn't have as much baggage for it.

"That's great! I mean-" he stopped, exhaling slowly to curb his enthusiasm. "Sorry. I mean, it's totally your decision. You don't have to just to like, I dunno. Just because I'm your Alpha. I don't wanna be like that, unless like. People are being assholes."

Zare Blakesley

Zare cocked his head, looking Dorian over like he wasn't quite sure what to make of him.

"You should," he said, and then when that obviously wasn't clear he opted to clarify. "There isn't anything wrong about being the alpha if you are the alpha. You're in the position because you won it."

Really, he didn't see the big deal about someone taking control if that was what they were supposed to. It was the natural way of things as far as he'd been informed, and it struck him as strange that Dorian seemed so intent on going out of his way to not be like that.
