My character Andrasta is starting a club with the purpose of getting the school to abolish detention.
She wanted to abolish detention when she was student council president in spring 2020; now that her term has ended, detention still exists, so there is still work left to be done.
Why Abolish Detention?
What is the club going to do?
She wanted to abolish detention when she was student council president in spring 2020; now that her term has ended, detention still exists, so there is still work left to be done.
Why Abolish Detention?
- Sending students to detention doesn't actually improve their behavior; it in fact may worsen it
- It fosters a negative relationship between the students and the teachers who send them there, which is counterproductive
- It's a miserable experience, which can't even be excused by any sort of benefit to the student body
- Manta Carlos's justice system focuses on rehabilitation for rule-breakers more than it does on punishing them; the school should learn from its example and do the same
What is the club going to do?
- Educate the student body and the faculty about why detention should be abolished
- Make posters, fliers, and possibly even a website
- Public demonstrations / protests
- Potentially, some kind of outreach to local media
- Any other tactic the club agrees would be useful
- Regular meetings to discuss and organize action
