Throughout the year, the island of Manta Carlos hosts many events. Every month there are anywhere from one to three events, both on the forum and in the ICC. Most of these are to add flavor to the setting, to give a backdrop for things happening in characters’ lives, or to shake things up and make life on the island more interesting.

There are two types of events, and the number of events in a given month will vary.. You can always find the current month's events by checking the monthly post in the event forum.

Holidays exist to provide flavor to the setting, and are entirely player handled. If you want your character to participate in a holiday, you can do so freely. You don't have to sign up, or worry about when you're doing it. You're free to make open threads celebrating the holiday, or your own private threads.

Participating in holidays is also a part of our challenge system, encouraging players to involve them in their character's stories.

Active events are staff organized events. They may involve a significant change to the setting, and can be either in the forum or in the ICC. Some events have unique mechanics, such as posting anonymously, while others might include randomly being matched with other players. These events are always organized by the staff, and some are even directly modded by them. The amount of staff participation in an active event varies, but no two are the same.

Active events may also allow players to raise a flag in order to signal the level of danger they're okay with for their character.

Flags are intended to allow players to inform mods about how much damage mods are allowed to do to their characters as a result of chance or the actions of other players. There are three possible flags:

No Flag: This character will not be affected by random staff events. Actions taken by other players (such as friendly fire) may have minor effects on your character, but will not have lasting effects.

Yellow Flag: This flag indicates your character may face a (temporary) injury from random staff events or the actions of other players. They may be sent to the hospital, or otherwise be hindered or unable to be roleplayed for a short while. This scales based on the character themselves. A normal human might end up breaking a limb, but a character who respawns may die and have to come back normally.

Red Flag: This flag indicates your character may face serious trauma from random staff events or the actions of other players. This will almost never involve randomly killing off your character, but can include things like, for a normal human, totally losing a limb. For someone more durable (or those who respawn), this can include death. If taken advantage of by a mod, it could seriously affect your character.

Raising a flag is not a guarantee it will happen to your character, it simply gives staff the option. However, flags only affect random and external factors. The consequences of your characters actions do not take flags into account. If your no-flag character jumps down an elevator shaft, that doesn't mean they'll walk away.

Raising flags may also have bonuses depending on the event. Certain sidequests, mini-events, and other bonuses may only be available to those with raised flags.

New Years Day: Celebrated on January 1st, this holiday involves ringing in a new year, and is widely celebrated throughout the island as a secular holiday. There are a number of large public events that are open to all citizens of the island.

Islander's Day: Celebrated on the second weekend of January, this is an island-only holiday celebrating those who have arrived on the island in the previous year. While most celebrations are private affairs among new arrivals, many businesses hold special events and promotions for those celebrating their first year on the island.

Imbolc: Celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of February, this holiday is a Gaelic traditional festival celebrating the beginning of spring. While Imbolc itself is technically a pagan religious festival, the island uses Imbolc as a name that represents all celebrations of the Spring season. Most festivals are religious in nature, but more secular celebrations can often be found at parks.

Valentine's Day: Celebrated on February 14th, this holiday celebrates romantic love. While originally a Christian Feast Day, the celebrations are primarily secular. Many businesses have promotions just for couples, and it's common to celebrate with loved ones.

Day of the Woods: Celebrated on the first weekend of March, this is an island-only holiday encouraging islanders to spend time out in the woods of Manta Carlos. Hiking is a popular event on this holiday, and is the only day of the year that some of the more remote hiking trails are open to the public.

Vernal Equinox: Celebrated around March 20th, this holiday marks one of two points in the year when there's an equal amount of day and night. Several cultures celebrate the change, with Nowruz and Ostara being particularly popular on the island. Some celebrations are secular, while many have religious or cultural meanings.

Adoption Week: Celebrated on the second week of April, this is an island-only holiday, celebrating and encouraging adoption and fostering on the island. An unfortunate reality is that many children on the island arrive with no family to speak of, and the holiday involves a number of events and pushes for awareness towards the lack of adoptive parents on the island.

Hexennacht: Celebrated on the night of April 30th, this holiday is originally a Germany holiday, spoken of only in folklore. Residents of the narrow reality believed that the witches of the world gathered on that one night to celebrate, and on Manta Carlos the magical community has taken up the legend and made it real. The island celebrates with bonfires, magical displays, and awareness about the history of magical communities worldwide.

Memorial Day: Celebrated on May 8th, this day is a memorial for the war dead of other nations. A more subdued holiday than many other celebrated on the island, it is in many ways a celebration of Manta Carlos's peaceful nature. While officially focused on those who died in wars, many take the day to visit graveyards and celebrate all those who have passed.

Lilac Music Festival: Celebrated on the third weekend of May, this is an island-only holiday celebrating the blooming of the lilacs which line many city streets. The Lilac Music Festival is primarily a large street festival, featuring a parade, food vendors, and a large musical event.

Performance Week: Celebrated on the first weekend of June, this is an island-only holiday intended to allow people to show off their powers and unique abilities. While many are intended to be stage performances, the festival often works as an informal way of job hunting for those who want to find jobs related to their powers.

Midsummer: Celebrated around June 21st, this holiday celebrates the longest day of the year. This celebration is celebrated by many cultures and religions, with the Dragon Boat Festival, Jāņi, and St. John's day all being celebrated around the island. Some celebrations are secular, while many have religious or cultural meanings.

Pacem in Terris: Celebrated on July 2nd, this is an island-only holiday that marks the halfway point of the year, and is intended to celebrate the peace between the various warring factions who come together on Manta Carlos. This island is celebrated with events hosted with cooperation between various groups, with the most notable being a number of demonic and angelic associations.

Founder's Day: Celebrated on July 10th, this holiday is an island-only celebration of the founding of Manta Carlos Island. This is primarily celebrated with a large potluck held in city hall, catered by local businesses wishing to show their wares.

Lammas: Celebrated on August 1st, this holiday is an English cultural holiday originally intended to mark the annual wheat harvest. This holiday is traditionally celebrated by creating a loaf of bread that was blessed, and then later used to work magic. The holiday has been adopted by pagans, and is celebrated in manners similar to many other worldwide harvest festival, such as Lughnasadh.

Ghost Festival: Celebrated on various nights in August, this holiday is a traditional Asian festival, celebrated on the 15th night of the seventh month. This festival is a primarily religious festival, focused on veneration of the dead and recognition of ones ancestors. There are several public events for those unfamiliar, and Manta Carlos's graveyards are well attended on this day.

School Founding Day: Celebrated on September 5th, this is an island-only holiday which celebrates the founding of Starlight Academy itself. The school hosts visitors on the following weekend, and has a small festival attended by clubs. This event is often considered to celebrate the start of the new school year.

Autumnal Equinox: Celebrated around September 23rd, this holiday marks one of two points in the year when there's an equal amount of day and night. Several cultures celebrate the change, with Chuseok and Mabon being particularly popular on the island. Some celebrations are secular, while many have religious or cultural meanings.

Blood Donation Week: Celebrated on the second week of October, this holiday is an island-only event that is put together by several groups representing blood drinking and flesh eating species. The week is intended to encourage regular blood donations, as well as educating newer citizens about the lives of blood drinkers and flesh eaters on the island.

Samhain: Celebrated on the evening of October 31st, this holiday marks the beginning of the darker half of the year. Originally a Gaelic festival, Samhain on the island has taken on elements of many similarly timed celebrations. Samhain is traditionally celebrated with bonfires, feasts, and divination, and is most well known on the island for being celebrated with a grand masquerade.

Food Festival: Celebrated on the first weekend of November, this is an island-only holiday, celebrating the foods of all cultures. Various cultural groups come together to present their own culture's food, setting up stalls throughout Oceania Park. There are a number of cooking demonstrations, and winning stalls are awarded the honor of catering the Pirate's Feast the following weekend.

Pirates' Feast: Celebrated on the second weekend of November, this holiday is an island-only celebration of the arrival of the first pirates to arrive on the island. This is primarily celebrated with a large feast held in city hall, catered by the winners of the Food Festival. The food being provided changes each year, leading to a huge amount of variety.

Winter Festival: Celebrated on various days throughout December, these holidays cover a massive variety of potential celebrations. While many other holidays have had one or two specific celebrations stand out, the sheer variety of observances during the second half of December has made it impossible. Bodhi Day, Christmas Eve, Pancha Ganapati, Saturnalia, Hannukkah, Yule, and dozens of other festivals are celebrated on the island throughout December.

Midwinter: Celebrated around December 21st, this holiday celebrates the shortest day of the year. This celebration is celebrated by many cultures and religions, with the Yaldā, the Dongzhi Festival, and Brumalia all being celebrated around the island. Some celebrations are secular, while many have religious or cultural meanings.

Cozy Cottage: On the third week of January, a ski lodge in the northern mountains of Manta Carlos Island is opened to the public for the weekend. Play in the snow, go skiing or snowboarding, or stay inside where it's warm and enjoy the closeness and community.

Student Council Elections: Held twice a year, once during March and once during September, the Student Council Elections run for the middle two weeks during each of those months. Students campaign, give speeches, and host fundraisers and parties all in a bid to join the student council.

Graduation Month: The month of graduation at Starlight Academy is an incredible time. Throughout the month of August, clubs are out in full force: hyping up new members and giving those graduating one last hurrah. Parties abound as students get ready to move up and move on into the next stage of their lives.

SPACEcon: SPACEcon! It's a convention! In! SPAAAAAAAAACE! SPACEcon is a chance to encounter cultures from planets and star systems beyond Earth in a fun, approachable manner. Held on the third weekend of September, SPACEcon takes over Starlight Observation Station with games, concerts, panels and seminars. Just don't antagonize X'lly, the SPACEcon mascot.

Masquerade Ball: A night of enchantment and magic on the night of Samhain, the Masquerade Ball is another staple of the Manta Carlos community identity. The Starlight Academy ballroom is opened up for people to come in lavish outfits and ornate masks, enjoy food and drink and dance with strangers in a fairy tale-like setting.

Carpe Noctem: The last weekend of November boasts a significant event for the people of Manta Carlos. Carpe Noctem is a bonfire festival held in a clearing in the forest. This night is said to be one where the walls between the realms of the living and the dead are especially thin. Many come to mourn and remember loved ones, and most who visit claim to see the faces of their dearly departed in the flames of the central fire.

Secret Santa: An annual tradition on Manta Carlos, Secret Santa is run throughout December. Occupants of the island are randomly matched up to exchange gifts just before Midwinter. This event does not have a single set location, but takes place all over the island at designated meeting points.

Tree Lighting Ceremony: The centerpiece of the Winter Festival, the Tree Lighting Ceremony is held on the third weekend of December. It consists of a massive tree set up in the center of Oceania Park where people can come to place ornaments, socialize, and generally just partake in community. At the end of the Ceremony, as night falls the tree is illuminated with thousands of lights, signifying the cohesiveness and collective beauty of so many individuals coming together.
