"I can do as I damn well please. A portal got us here..." Broen grimaced and took another drink of his water.

"Don't give me that fuckin look, Rat Girl. I don't need or want your pity." Broen bared his teeth.despite himself and tried to look menacing, cbut then it fell into a kind of tired laugh.

"I mean, unless pity involved a pity fuck. Then, by all means, pity away."

"This may surprise you, but people have this wonderful thing called empathy. See, what empathy does is allows us to feel how someone else may feel when they're going through a tough time. Fucking wild, I know. Even more surprising is that people might have empathy for you even when you're acting like an extra on Jackass."

She shook her head, feigning more pity than she felt. "Sucks, too. I can't even call you by your first name 'cause I don't think you could do shit about it. Really takes the fun away from these little moments we share."

Rory's tone immediately pepped up. "Now! You done acting like a little bitch about this whole empathizing thing so we can move on and actually do something about your fuckin' problem or do I have to keep going?"

Broen sneered harder and just collapsed backwards onto the bed. He glared up at the ceiling, fuming silently about the mention of his name. Fuck her. She didn't know anything. Stupid fuckin heroes, thinking they knew better than everybody else. "Don't waste your fuckin time. I already saw doctors. I've got a big-ass chunk of it in my brain. It won't kill me, they said, but..."
He waved his hand dismissively, hiding his irritation under a vague veneer of disinterest. "Only non-magical healthcare is free here. And a couple inches of super-metal in my brain isn't really something you can fix with a scalpel and steady hands."

The truth was, Broen fuckin hurt. And the metal in his leg meant he couldn't fuckin run for long, so he was relying on his belt more now. "Yeah well empathy isn't something I particularly have. Or did crossing the portal fuck up your memories?"

He worked quick. She could respect that, she might have even felt enough sympathy to sit near him but she couldn't afford him popping down and running out the second he had the chance. And Rory was not under any disillusion that he wouldn't do just that if she was away from the door.

"I remember," she responded curtly. "But just because Abernathy fucked you up a little doesn't mean you're broken forever, Broen."

And Rory was already thinking of the magical ways at which Broen could be helped. Magic had a cost and all that bullshit. But, Broen was still one of the people of Halcyon City and they were her people. So, although she couldn't say Broen would ever do the same, in the long run, it didn't matter.

"...can't unfuck my head, Rat Girl." He looked over at her briefly and groaned before he went back to staring at the ceiling. She was just standing there. Keeping him in. "What, are you gonna stand there forever? Because frankly, it won't bother me at all. It's you who's gotta see my naked ass when I come out of the shower."

He shifted on the bed so that he could smirk at her. "Unless that's your plan all along. But if I promise not to take the next whatever the fuck off this shithole island, will you fuckin leave?"

"Nah, I sure as hell can't," she agreed. Then snorted and laughed at the idea of Broen getting out of the shower and making shit awkward. "Not the worst thing I'll have ever seen. But something tells me it would annoy you."

Then she shook her head and toed the shirt from under the doorway so she could open the door. "Nah. Don't make a promise you don't plan to keep. I was just waiting until you were calmed down... and the meds were kicked in.

"Be safe, Broen," she said right before closing his door.

Yup. He was going to cause a world of problems, but he'd probably stick around at least.
