Silence.
The forest wasn't speaking to her anymore, after she had insulted it a few minutes back. Or maybe it was back when she'd had to duck under all those bothersome signs with things like 'forbidden' and 'keep out' written on them. Honestly, why would someone put signs up in a forest, of all places! Maybe they were drying or something, so they could be put up somewhere bad to warn people away. She shivered, leaning against a tree for a moment. The way the signs were written, she didn't want to go to the place they were meant for.. She could only imagine what a place that would require such dire warnings against it would be like, and she was perfectly fine with that.
But the forest wasn't speaking to her, in its odd little language of bird chirps and leave rustlings that Ed had come to understand. No, it was silent, except for a shivering moan of wind that occasionally took it upon itself to pierce through the trees. Ed didn't like it, covered her ears whenever she heard it off in the distance.
A rustling noise off in the distance startled Ed from her thoughts, making her bend down on her knees and peer through the bushes in a useless attempt to see the animal that caused it. Was it the forest, trying to say sorry? Ed couldn't understand why, as she had been the one who had mentioned she liked it better in summer. She should be the one to apologize, not it.
Eyes. Small, yellow eyes that shined with something Ed couldn't quite understand, close to the ground and moving towards her at a leisurely pace. Ed crouched down further, trying to make out the animal the eyes were presumably attached to. A cat? Too large, although it moved quite like one. It couldn't be a dog, either, or a -
And then it pounced, and Ed was knocked backwards, knocking her head on a rock and screaming sharply. A tiger. She didn't bother to think about how unreasonable the thought of tigers living in a forest like this, her mind more preoccupied with the sharp fang-like teeth the tiger was showing off to her. It leaned down to try them out on her arm, and she hit it with a tiny balled up fist, hardly enough to hurt it but enough to make it turn to glance at her and snarl. "Help?" She half-whispered, doubting there was anyone else in the forest and knowing no one would hear her even if they did happen to be roaming about, the way her voice was acting. And "Help." louder, in a half crying but-I’m-being-brave sort of voice that was still hardly enough to call someone to her rescue. She was pounding on the miniature tiger with both fists now, keeping it at least from sinking its teeth into her. She needed a knife, a knife to match its teeth and give it a taste of its own medicine. But nothing magically appeared beside her, and she doubted it was going to.
The tiger shook off her fists, getting tired of the game and clawing at her stomach, making her drop her fists and double up in pain. Please. Someone..
Help.
