Name: Ryusei Lockhart
Age: 17
Birthday: August 9th
Gender: Male, he/him pronouns
Species: Human
Category: Student
Class: High School
Grade: 12
Appearance Description: Ryusei is an individual of average height, fair complexion, warm brown eyes- None of which are very interesting traits. The most striking thing about him is the knot of cherry pink hair... And the gemstones on his body!
That's right- Ryusei is covered with gemstones. Due to a curse that caused him to join Starlight in the first place, the spot above Ryusei's heart is caked with flakes of pink quartz, in such a way that it resembles the scaling on a horned lizard. Depending on the progression of the curse, these gems can be seen all across his shoulders, neck, and hands. But usually, he tries to keep the curse managed enough that it only applies to his heart. The skin beneath the crystals is ash grey and coarse to the touch, like sandpaper.
Other than that, there's nothing too notable about him. When you look at him, the first thing that screams out about his appearance is that he's attractive, in a cutesy-handsome way; he usually dresses with pink clothing, sleeveless shirts, and anything else that's comfortable and fits the color palette of his hair and diamonds. Given that Ryusei already deals with enough gems as is, he refuses to wear jewelry of any kind.
Personality Description: Ryusei is a very complicated person. Not every aspect of his personality agrees with the others, coming together reluctantly to make a unique, incoherent person of which there can be no replicas.
At a superficial layer, Ryusei is an enthusiastic, if very oblivious person. He's always laughing at something or someone, he never says no to an adventure or anything that might seem fun and potentially irresponsible. This gives off a cute, very approachable vibe that appeals to anyone; classmates, students, strangers; you can't help but trust Ryusei, because he seems too open-faced to be plotting anything.
But underneath this cutesy layer is a schemer; the type of person who embraces being treated as the lovable idiot, the teacher's pet, the poster boy, all to get away with what he wants. He isn't evil in any form; but he does like getting away with pranks and selfish ambitions which no one would be able to get away with if they weren't trusted by anyone else. Simply put, he takes advantage at the way he presents himself to get away with things others couldn't.
And at the base of it all... You have a seventeen year old boy training to cope with the fact that his days are numbered. He doesn't have any hope for trying to cure his curse, or even figure it out. Even speaking about it makes him anxious, so he tries to ignore it as much as possible. This is Ryusei's core; a person so determined to ignore his problems that he constructs his entire identity around that fact. The reason he makes so many jokes, laughs so hard, and goes on so many adventures is so he doesn't sit still; because the moment his mind can start thinking about what's happening to him, he'll fall apart.
Active Abilities: At will, Ryusei can turn different parts of his body to gemstone, and cause those gems to shoot out into spiky outcrops. Furthermore, whenever he gets afraid or too excited, pop! He can turn into a smooth, small oval of rhodochrosite.
Passive Abilities: His curse makes it so his flesh is constantly hardening and turning into gemstone, starting from his heart and crawling across his body. He can reverse the effects of his curse with magic spells and potions, but if he ever completely gets rid of the curse, his stone heart will stop beating, and he'll die.
Weaknesses: Ryusei's curse is ultimate; he can't stop it or get rid of it, so any forces that are good at manipulating curses can cause this affliction to flare up more powerfully than ever. Secondly, using either one of his active abilities makes the curse temporarily more powerful. Lastly, he's vulnerable to anti-elemental or anti-demon spells, given the origin of his powers.
Biography: Ryusei was born to a Japanese woman and an American man, who happened to be serving as an officer for the US Navy's garrison in Japan. But this was no ordinary Navy officer; this was a member of the Lockhart family, a rich and powerful family in the United States comprised of explorers, CEOs, military leaders, and other people of high importance and repute within the world. Ryusei was given a very plush lifestyle as a child, complimented by his eccentric family's habits.
But he was never especially close to his mother and father; instead, he preferred to spend time with his grandfather. As an exceptional archaeologist doing work in Central America (Mexico especially), Ryusei was always amazed by his stories and research. Being the mischievous person that he is, he'd often break into his grandfather's study and look at his work first-hand; photographs, equipment, even the rare archaeological finds he'd been entrusted to document in his study. This all came crashing down, however, when his grandfather brought home a rare red gemstone.
The red stone of Tlacopan! Rumored to contain an ancient secret feared by the Aztecs, Ryusei ended up being the first one to touch it in years; until that point, everyone else had only handled it with gloves and specialized equipment. Immediately, a powerful entity came forth from the stone, seeping into Ryusei and knocking him unconscious. The next morning, he was rooted to the study under sharp pillars of pink quartz.
If it had been anyone else, Ryusei would have been completely petrified, turning into a pink statue within days. But the Lockhart family is powerful; and through their numerous connections in the world, Ryusei was given supernatural treatment to his condition, allowing him to reverse it long enough to find a place that would be able to monitor him as his curse advanced; Starlight Academy. And so, he was shipped off to a faraway island with the hopes of finding a cure amidst magic users and supernatural scholars. But in his dreams, Ryusei can hear that ancient demon... And it has drained away all his hopes of being cured.
Resources: Ryusei has a lot of money and influence in American society as a member of the Lockhart family. In superhuman society... Not so much. In real-world terms, his family has the type of influence brandished by the Kennedys.
Additional Information: Ryusei very frequently goes to counseling to deal with the psychological stress of his affliction.
