Name: Rori Mirror
Age: 35 (as reflections), 1 (living)
physically 18, mentally ~18
Birthday: May 7
Gender: Male
Species: Mirror Spirit
Category: Student
Class: High School
Grade: Remedial
Appearance Description:
Rori is an average height, 5'8", with a kind of lean and wiry build. His body is mostly hollow, and not dense, so he weighs very little for his size.
His skin is smooth, incredibly pale, and highly refractive. You couldn't see right through the boy, but his skin is translucent. If he somehow swallowed a flashlight, he could light a room, dimly.
His grayish-blue hair is medium length and flat to his head. His eyes are also a light bluish- gray. Rori's features and body-shape are generally human, although his time in the post-apocalyptic AU has led him to develop wolf ears rather than human ones. He has no tongue at all.
Rori always looks very put together, though he has no real fashion sense. He keeps his hair combed, and he likes to experiment with makeup. Those are things that he has a lot of experience watching people do, so he's actually comfortable with those actions.
Since the boy is usually mimicking other people's posture, movement, and expressions, they don't really have a natural demeanor of their own. When he isn't mirroring others, Rori tends to be expressionless or over-exaggerated and his face generally does not match his actual mood.
Personality Description:
Though Rori can appear quite naive at times, simply because of his lack of knowledge and poor communication skills, the boy has a sharp, inquisitive mind, and it's eager to learn. He is also literal minded, taking most things at face value, and has trouble grasping humour or proper social interaction. Rori is pretty much the definition of lived in a box. Aside from what he's experienced in his few months of life, the only things he knows are what he's seen from mirrors, and even those memories feel like second-hand memories. He had never been touched, and had no contact with society at large. Now he has no personal bubble, and trouble comprehending that other people have boundaries, but he's slowly learning that he had to ask before petting people.
The mirror spirit is still new to being a person, to being sentient at all. He finds large groups bewildering. Actually pretty much everything is slightly terrifying, and thrilling, and confusing, all jumbled together. Intensely lonely, the mirror spirit still feels trapped, as even with his newfound vocabulary he doesn't know how to express himself or bridge the disconnect between people who were born sentient and him who is just learning to be. His desire to connect can cause troubles not only because people might take advantage of him, but because he has a distinct lack of morality and can easily be convinced to do harmful things if he's convinced they're the proper people thing to do.
Rori is aware that his emotions are dulled. He actually feels numb most of the time and dislikes the feeling. When he does experience other emotions, they are generally dim and unfamiliar. Even pleasant emotions feel slightly awkward, but even unpleasant emotions feel new and interesting. He also has a hard time matching his feelings to the expression of them. The boy might seem rude or awkward with the way he mimics other people, but he doesn't do it to insult.
Species Abilities:
Mirror Action - Unconsciously falls into mirroring a person's actions, way of movement, down to their posture and body language. A very limited sort of physical precognition allows him to do this instantly, just like a mirror. Also like a mirror, if he was facing them he would move the opposite side from what they were moving. He has to concentrate to not do this, as a matter of habit, but he won't suddenly switch to mimicking someone if he's already focused on another deliberate action. Rori will mimic the closest person he can see. This is most obvious with humanoids, but he can also mimic animals to the extent that a human body would allow - baring his teeth or panting, for example. He gets no muscle-memory from this and it is largely uncontrolled. If someone punched themselves in the face, he would punch himself. But then he'd most likely be able to stop copying them for a bit. He could mimic karate moves, but there'd be no force, and he wouldn't be learning karate. He also can't mimic superhuman feats like flying, and he couldn't use mimicry to lift something he couldn't lift or anything similar to that. Pictures on a screen like a TV show or movie don't really affect him this way.
Transfiguration Resistance - Having achieved his base form, Rori's body is unwilling to give it up. It reacts to any magic that changes his form (transmogrification, glamour. Not acid based or disintegration magic) the same as an injury, by regenerating. This is at the speed of his natural regeneration, an inch every five minutes, so assuming his entire body was changed, it would take him about 6 hours to completely change back. Wearable glamours give him migraines and make him feel achy and tense as a result of his body attempting to fight them off. He cannot control this ability or shut it off.
Physiology - Ageless. His hair doesn't grow naturally. Can regenerate limbs at about an inch every five minutes. Cannot regenerate his head - decapitation will kill him. Wouldn't be permanently injured by piercing or pressure. Doesn't bleed. Rori's "skin" is about an inch thick and he's completely hollow inside. His teeth and nails are only slightly firmer than the rest of his flesh, and can't be used to bite/scratch. Has wolf ears, but only average human hearing. He can be permanently corroded by acids, but is otherwise unaffected by poison/disease. Rori is not affected by cold or most heat, but could be melted/killed by extreme heat (~1500 C). His sense of touch is as dull as his emotions, as if he's living behind a barrier, and he usually does not feel much pain from any injuries. He occasionally gets headaches for no particular reason or his whole body will feel like pins and needles. The mirror spirit needs very little sleep, a couple hours a day. He "eats" metal and glass by putting it into his mouth and absorbing it. He would get hungry and eventually melt away if he didn't eat at all, but he doesn't require more than a pound a day of "food".
Biography:
Rori was never actually born, he sort of came into existence. At first he was just the reflection in someone's mirror. Actually in any mirror that was from a batch created about 35 years ago from glass that had accidentally been imbued with residual magic. They remember living as if they saw and heard through all those mirrors, but they were not actually sentient at that time.
The closest thing to a birth for the mirror spirit, was when he was accidentally brought into the world as a living being. A teenaged boy was using one of "his" mirrors as part of some sort of summoning ritual. But something went wrong and Rori came out of the mirror instead. His new physical body was the literal mirror image of his summoner, but faded and pale. Rori was very confused at suddenly having memories and being alive. At first he kept reflecting the other boy, who was also baffled and thought that Rori was the demon he had attempted to summon mocking him. But then Rori managed to stop mimicking him for a moment and attempted to run back into the mirror.
Rori had pretty much no way of communicating, but he did seem cooperative once the initial panic subsided. The summoner had no idea what to do with this mute spirit, so he brought him to the academy and let them deal with him.
One of the teachers at the academy gave him his name as somewhat of a joke, but Rori seemed to like it, and he did need a name. He was treated like an orphan, and set up with a temporary foster parent. He was placed in the high school for socialization purposes, but requires a lot of special education because of his illiteracy and near inability to communicate. Rori is looking forward to being alive and learning everything he can, he's literally gotten a brand new start.
Rori has developed slightly since becoming alive, mostly seen in improved writing skills and being more outgoing in his interactions with others. He has also become more of a distinct person, discovering his final form based on experiences in the Post-apocalyptic AU.
Additional Information:
He can't speak - he can move his lips in imitation of speech, but cannot produce sounds. And it's hard for him to accurately form words at all without a tongue. He can understand speech (English, French and Spanish) and read lips. He still communicates in a mixture of bad drawings and mime, but his education thus far has improved his writing skills to the point that he can write simple phrases mostly legibly, if you ignore his terrible spelling.
Special education includes math, reading & writing, and sign language, but he's still only about a grade 1 level.
