He keeps his worries, frustrations and insecurities to himself with a practiced sort of ease, and one way he likes to do this is by averting attention from himself whenever possible. He'd much rather talk about metamagical theory or the weather or literally anything other than what he perceives to be his own weakness. He has a difficult time asking for help.
Roland has a huge love for magic, because it was something that took its time coming to him. After his aura began to manifest, he became increasingly obsessed with learning his limits, and he's nearly hurt himself for it a number of times. When he has a mind to apply himself to a problem, he does so wholeheartedly, repeatedly flinging himself at the problem until he finds a solution or his will finally breaks.
Roland has a moderate degree of social anxiety. He tends to be prickly when surprised, awkward in most settings, and he is quick to push back against anyone who tests his patience. * Photomanipulation: Roland can change the way light moves to a small degree: the initial effect is sort of like the reflection of light off of water, but suspended in midair. This affects an area of up to thirty feet in diameter, centered on him and now penetrating walls. Having done this, he can condense the light further to form a shifting mass of light that glows until all of the trapped light escapes or is released. This mass is generally no bigger than his fist, and has a ghostly sort of glow, like seeing the corona around a total solar eclipse. He can change the color and intensity of the light in this form, with dimmer light being harder to maintain but lasting longer. He can't create light, nor can he manipulate light in brightly-lit places like outside in direct sunlight, and he's not skilled enough to make illusions. Releasing held light creates a flash that, depending on the intensity of the gathered light, may temporarily blind people with vision spots or tears.

From eight to eighteen, he lived a semi-wild life with his mother, a mountain nymph named Chela guarding a section of the Appalachian trail. She was formerly handmaiden to a goddess of the moon, centuries before she lived in North America, and she had a suite of magical gifts that she'd received as part of her role: she was a prophetess, a prolific archer with uncanny aim, and she had an ability to navigate the mountain with ease, as if she were nearly weightless. They lived in the middle of the woods: he had a small cabin that she'd built for him, and she'd spend the day with him before going hunting at night. He learned to cook his own meals over a fire, to clean the kills he and his mother caught, to take care of his own basic needs.
Because Chela didn't understand a lot about humans and their world, she forced Roland to teach himself some of the practical skills he'd need to be among humans, as well as give himself a basic education. With the help of his father, she secured books and workbooks for him to work through, and he lived a somewhat sheltered, spartan existence, with Chela pushing his studies and providing lots of metaphysical tutoring once his aura manifested and Michael paying yearly visits, as Chela allowed. After his eighteenth birthday, he left home to travel the length of the Appalachian trail to meet other mountain nymphs. Chela opposed this at first, but after a particularly nasty argument about it, she retreated to one of her secret places, returning a few days later with a different attitude, claiming she'd seen that his future would have him taken far from her, and that he would become much stronger for it. With her blessing, he began this trip. He'd originally planned to join mainstream society, but quickly realized that he knew more about life in the mountains than life among humans, so he stayed in the woods, foraging and hunting and seeking out any nymphs he could find. They were stunningly rare, though, and several months into his search, a member of the Academy tracked him down in the mountains and offered him a place at the school to hone his gifts. Despite his own reluctance, he accepted and, with a little help to navigate the broader world on his way to the island, was able to make the trip to start his college life.
