Being raised in two different homes as almost two different people, combined with their emotional/physical shifting has made River's two phases very distinctive. They have the same interests/goals/desires, but there is a marked shift as well. River is generally an extroverted people person. They love outdoorsy, physical activities like hockey, swimming, and hiking. They are also an animal person, interested in biology and the environment, who enjoys traveling and seeing new places, discovering different cultures. Biography:
River was an accidental, though not unwanted child, born from a one-night stand between a moon demon who was hunting on the full moon and a fairly powerful vampire. Their parents both lived in Canada, specifically Northern Ontario, but far enough away from each other that their being weregender was easy to cover up. All three lived nocturnal lives.
Their mother was originally going to raise them by themself, but recognized both that raising a were-gender child among normal humans could be problematic and also that being half-vampire affected River, so they told River's father about the child. Fortunately, River's father had always wanted a child but wasn't aware he could have one and was glad to accept responsibility.
So roughly every two weeks from the time they were an infant, River switched between parents, living almost a double life. He stayed with his mother in the full moon phase (His mother was female in full moon phase). She stayed with her father in her new moon phase.
When living with his mother, River was raised in a sort of commune with about 60 people including children. The commune was kind of in the middle of nowhere, but there was a decent-sized town about 10 miles away, and it wasn't isolated. There was no internet/tv and cell phone reception was bad, but there was still electricity. Everything was shared - work, childcare/education, housing, and the few cars they had. The people of the community did a lot of hunting and fishing, as well as growing their own food. Raising chickens and making handicrafts to get by. Aside from working, River spent plenty of time swimming in the summer, playing hockey in the winter, and generally roughhousing and doing the outdoorsy type stuff they loved.
Because of the nature of River's feeding, when he was a child, the half-demon's mother would feed him her own energy. As he got older, she would let him feed off her own entranced victims, protecting him from the sexual aspect until he was old enough, but making no secret of their violent nature. She was not ashamed of being a killer, but she still tried to help him learn some self-control mostly via meditation because even demons could not afford to be careless. And he still had to learn to survive off animals when human energy wasn't viable.
River was 14 when he both lost his virginity and accidentally made his first kill. His mother helped him cover it up. After that, his mother would take him out to murder - sometimes travelers/hunters, sometimes in nearby towns. River's Dad was a decent man, not a killer - He brought her animals to feed from, and when she was old enough he took her hunting for them.
After they graduated, they wanted to go to college to become a vet, but they weren't sure how they'd manage it. So the moonpire decided to hold off on that dream and travel for a bit. They ended up backpacking around India and discovered that they loved it, so they stayed for a few years just traveling, picking up work here and there or just stealing from their victims. River still kept in contact with their family. During their travels, River ended up killing in female form, as a vampire.
Eventually, they ran into a vampire's territory and had a bit of a steamy romance with said vampire. At some point, River mentioned wanting to be a vet. The vampire told them about Starlight Academy on Manta Carlos. They decided to go there and follow their original dream, excited to finally be fully themself and not have to hide.
Resources: Lives in dorms. Hunts their own food. Has a small amount of savings from theft during backpacking days. Gets some cash/necessary items by trading their venom as a drug.
