(see additional notes for photo credits)

In both forms, Peregrine is short and slender, with no external genitalia, and looks very young. Both his forms have sharp teeth and short hair. His male form, which is his main form, looks like a normal human. He has dark hair and dark, almost black eyes. His complexion is very fair. He looks frail, with little muscle tone. He carries himself like a proper gentleman. He is always dressed very neatly, in high-quality clothes.

His female form, Dot, shows off her mer ancestry. Her hair is tinted green, and her eyes are light blue. Although she is still slender, she is wiry rather than fragile. She is slightly more curvy, though her body is still androgynous. Her skin is blue and lightly covered in fish scales. She has gills. Dot carries herself like a young girl. She likes loose, flowy clothes and pretty dresses. Dot's favourite colour is green and she usually wears green accessories or shoes. She has no fashion sense.

Personality Description:
Bird is a very polite, reserved young man. He is also a very repressed Catholic boy. He wears the air of old money well. He is responsible and proud nearly to the point of arrogance. Basically, he's a semi-unsociable, slightly snooty stick-in-the-mud. He would never think to disrespect his parents. He is generally stoic and unemotional, although he is very protective of Dot, who he considers to be his little sister rather than a part of him. He does get annoyed at what he considers rudeness or bad influences. He has some fondness, and talent, for opera singing. He is predominantly straight, and would deny any attraction he did feel towards another man. He is strictly monogamous and would probably be a very traditional romantic.

Dot usually has the emotional capacity of a five-year-old, although it varies and she can sometimes seem like an immature teenager. Mentally, she's as intelligent as Bird, but socially, she never really grew up. She is generally happy and friendly and very curious about everything. She's very active, almost hyperactive, and loves to swim. She hasn't had much of a chance to explore her interests and will dabble in anything. She's attracted to females, but although she's interested in romance and maybe kissing, she's not really into sex yet. She can see through Bird's eyes, but he doesn't let her take control very often. She also considers herself a separate person and looks up to Bird like a brother. Sometimes she's a bit envious that Bird gets to decide when she can be out.

Powers:
Minor shapeshifting: Peregrine has two forms that he can switch between at will. What he considers his main form is human. His other form that goes with his other personality is more mermaid-like. The shift is nearly instantaneous. All damage/illness carries through forms. His forms are linked to which personality is in control. Peregrine is the dominant personality and controls the transformation. He is automatically in human form when sleeping/unconscious.

Species Abilities:
Siren Song (Human form): In his human form, Bird's singing voice is naturally mesmerizing. It's the kind of voice that sticks in your head, even if you don't like his style. It's particularly compelling to biological females, they would have a hard time not listening to him and would find themselves attracted to him. This only works on humans that aren't deaf. And wouldn't charm anyone who actively resisted. The attraction is purely physical, and all effects only last while he is singing.

Mer Form: Dot's form has gills and scales and can breathe underwater. Her form is slightly stronger than the average human her size would be. She can handle colder temperatures for longer than a normal human, but hot, dry days make her sick.

Biography:

Peregrine is the youngest son of Corbin III and Alouette Desmarais. They are an old, wealthy family and have lived in Montreal for six generations. Peregrine's 2 older brothers, Corbin IV and Arnett, take on most of the responsibility of being heirs to the large Desmarais fortune, so he has the leeway to focus on a career outside of the family business. He intends to become a famous Opera singer.

Peregrine has always been closer to his mother than his father. His condition is fairly rare but is a physical deformity rather than a disease. He is physically male, just missing the outer bits. It's never really been an issue in his family since they don't discuss sex anyways.

Growing up wealthy meant that Peregrine never had to worry about money, and in fact, it was rarely discussed except in learning how to manage it. He went to a prestigious Catholic private school, went on vacations in Europe, and generally mingled with other well-off children. His parents were reserved and proper, perhaps a little distant, but never neglectful. He may have been a little spoiled, being his mother's baby, but his family was never flashy with their wealth. He was required to participate in some fine arts education along with the rest of his studies, like his other siblings, from a young age, and that was when he discovered his enjoyment of singing. When his parents realised that he had talent in that area and that he was inclined more to art than business, they took him to all the best opera houses and vocal coaches. His father just wanted to be sure he didn't end up doing something low class like joining a rock band, but his mom was glad he found something to enjoy. His father's plan worked though because Peregrine took to Opera like a fish to water.

Bird was unaware that he was anything other than a normal human boy for most of his life. Sometimes he could almost hear a young girl's voice in his head, but it usually passed, and he didn't want his parents to think he was crazy. But just before puberty, that feeling strengthened until it was like another person living inside him. At first, he was scared of Dot; he thought he was imagining things or maybe that he was homosexual and that's what that felt like. But Dot felt just too separate to be himself. When she started talking to him, he was convinced he was developing a mental illness, but he was also somehow less afraid. She seemed so sweet and innocent. It was also something he could hide from his family and avoid any stigma. That was the first time he had ever hidden anything from them. His father didn't notice, but his mother suspected he was hiding something.

Dot remained a personality only until Peregrine fully reached puberty. The first transformation was unexpected. He was swimming in the family pool when Dot started to talk to him. She was always more present when he swam, and he felt more relaxed about talking with her. She asked him to let her take over. Bird didn't really know what that meant, but he thought she wanted to try swimming herself. And then he transformed. He wasn't even aware of the physical transformation at first because it was so odd to feel like he was looking out through his own eyes without control. Then Dot dove and he felt himself breathing water. He was so startled he transformed right back and almost drowned. Bitter about the lack of control, Peregrine refused to talk to Dot for a week. But it's hard to not talk to someone inside your head, and he realised it wasn't her fault. Still he knew this was not a thing he could hide very easily.

Bird was conflicted about letting his parents know. He already felt guilty about hiding Dot from them, but this was so much bigger than that. He could control it though. Except when he did another test run in the privacy of his bedroom, he discovered that the transformation happened whenever Dot was allowed control, and he couldn't bring himself to deny her the ability to be able to use their body for herself. So he went to his mom. Her reaction was almost as surprising to Peregrine as his transformation had been. She told him she'd always known he was special, and then brought out some old photo albums. She explained that one of his ancestors had been a mermaid and that every few generations those traits would appear in their family. It was a long discussion, and he ended up telling her about everything and even got up the courage to let her see Dot.

His mom was his lifeline after that. Alouette would sneakily buy Dot clothes, take them both swimming, and point out other supernatural-blooded people he had never been aware of. And when he got his letter from Starlight Academy, she helped field questions from his father. Bird and his mother decided that he should stay at home and continue his private school education until he graduated, and then go to Starlight Academy for his BA.

When Peregrine finally graduated, his mother convinced him that he should finally come clean with his father. Bird wasn't quite sure, but he did respect the man, and it had been hard keeping his secret all these years. He decided to let him know about the supernatural bit, without letting him know about Dot. He knew the transformation couldn't be perceived as a mental illness, although he still wasn't sure how his father would react. His father's reaction was actually a little underwhelming when Bird told him. He was disbelieving at first until Bird's mother agreed that it was true. Then after a long conversation, and explanation of the supernatural, and a single transformation on Bird's part, he merely stated that he still expected Peregrine to uphold the Desmarais family name, and to never transform in public outside of the Manta Carlos Islands.

With everything settled, it was simple for Peregrine to move into a nice house on Manta Carlos and start his new life. Bird resolved that this could be a new start for him and Dot. He'd never been able to let her out much before, but being in a place where pretty much everyone was supernatural meant he could give her more freedom.

Dot was excited about being able to be in control of the body more often. Bird had even promised that she could have pretty much the whole weekend to herself. And they were moving to an island with water everywhere! She hadn't minded not getting to transform very much because Mom was always nice to her, and she was used to being in the head anyways. But she had been sad that Dad didn't know about her. She was looking forward to meeting lots of people, maybe even ones like herself.

Additional Information:
Peregrine is mostly carnivorous in both forms. Dot gets a little sick eating anything other than seafood.

Bird is a tenor. Dot is an untrained alto and doesn't have siren song.

Peregrine's car is a mint-blue BMW. Dot can't drive.

The house that Peregrine bought is a nice-looking, fully furnished, two-story, three-bedroom house, with an indoor pool. Dot has a room of her own, although she can't fall asleep without transforming back. Peregrine has a live-in maid and hires a chef if he ever eats at home. But he still has a well-stocked kitchen for Dot's sake as she has expressed an interest in learning to cook.
