Annaleise returned the smile; while Zero's smile was small and reserved, her own smile was broad and uninhibited. Her nose wrinkled with the effort of providing such a smile, and Anna sat up a little straighter, smoothing her skirt back over her knees. Her little finger caught the beginning of a run in her stockings, and she made a note to whine to her babysitter about that later. "I'm Annaleise. Most people just call me Anna, though. "

"What are you reading?" Kicking her way out of her chair, she let the heavy book she had been looking at slide to the floor with an awful crunch to the spine. Without regard for the expensive item, Annaleise shuffled her way over to Zero, quickly sliding onto the stranger's lap before she could say anything against it. "Are you smart? You look it."

Zero had little to no time to react as the little bundle called Annaleise slipped into her lap. Zero sighed a little and went with it, feeling awkward but perhaps she could get used to Anna...though, Anna would be the only exception of a child she'd allow herself to be friends with. "I'm reading a book about how to catch bad guys and stop them from being...evil." Zero replied when asked what she was reading.

Zero's smile widened a bit. "I am smart. Not the smartest but some day I hope to be." Zero chuckled a little. Another rare thing! Zero was changing and she was still only new! Oh how they grow up so fast. "So Anna, what's your favourite book?" Zero asked in an attempt at small talk. (Or what she would classify as small talk anyway.)

"Oh." Annaleise thought that a book about catching bad guys must be very interesting, and wanted to read it, too. She had been read a couple detective books in the past, mostly Nancy Drew and other such young adult fiction books, and they mostly captured her interest. Her favourite part was always when the mystery was solved and the bad guy was revealed. She didn't like anticipation much, and usually demanded that the reader skip to the end.

"I think you're the smartest already." Already feeling the beginnings of affection for her newfound friend, Annaleise leaned back into the warmth that was Zero. Cuddling closer, Annaleise had to think for a moment about her favourite book. "I like books about dragons. Once I read a book about a dragon named Puff! I liked that book. What's yours?"

"My favourite book? Well uh...mostly detective stuff. Ever since I was little I loved exploring and pretending to take down bad guys. As I grew older it became a serious thing for me." Zero replied, reminiscing about the past, a soft smile lighted up her face. Then she looked down at Anna again. "You think I'm the smartest? That's sweet. I think you're pretty smart too." Zero said her eyes starting to shine with affection.

Zero thought for a moment. "Anna...do you have anyone looking after you?" Zero asked thinking of something.

The idea that Zero was a real-life Nancy Drew appealed to Annaleise considerably — immediately taken, she decided then that she was to be the sidekick in any future adventures.
"The smartest in the whole world!" Proclaiming this a little too loudly, she earned a couple harsh stares from elder students trying to study, and managed to haughtily ignore them.

"Maybe." A little reluctant to divulge her secret of being a runaway, Anna couldn't resist spilling the daring tale of her escape. "I escaped from my babysitter. She doesn't like fun, she's very boring. I hid in some boxes 'til she left 'cos I'm much smarter than she is. She didn't suspect a thing."Suddenly suspicious, Anna squinted up at Zero. Why?"

Zero laughed a little. Annaleise was the first to make her laugh a real laugh and it felt nice. Though Zero would limit laughing and showing affection to Annaleise and Annaleise only. "Your sweet. I like that."

"I was only asking, because I was thinking that you might like me as your babysitter some time. I need something to do besides study, and while it's unusual for me, I think babysitting would...be a good thing for me." Zero replied. Well she needed a job and she liked Annaleise what better way to connect with the young girl and broaden her horizons than to babysit?

Shrugging, Annaleise didn't much care who attended her. Her father mostly took care of hiring caretakers, and so far he had done an awful job. All of them were far too responsible, and couldn't have any fun with her. She took the most enjoyment when she got to listen to her teachers gossiping about the terror haunting their classes. She got in an awful lot of trouble for biting that one teacher, though. Not like she didn't deserve to be bitten, though.

"My daddy hires babysitters. You'd have to talk to him. He says it 'cos I'm a loose candy that I can't have just anyone to watch me." She'd very much like to have Zero as a companion, though. Anna was certain that she would be much more fun to stay with than the others.

Zero thought for a moment. "How about we go speak to your daddy now unless he's busy." Zero said confirming the fact that Zero will become Anna's babysitter, and she'll try every approach she can both 'desperate teenage needing a job' wise and 'I have detective skills I can handle an eight year old' wise.

"Now? I don't know... We can try to call him, if you like. If I go back now, I'll get in lots of trouble though." Scrunching up her face, Annaleise didn't like the idea of going back to get in trouble. Her current caretakers were the only ones who knew her parent's phone numbers, though, she hadn't gotten around to memorizing those yet.

"How do we get around them...?" She didn't think they'd be fooled by very much. It was hard enough trying to escape their presence, at times. Perhaps they'd have written it down somewhere, even. Zero was a detective, Anna bet that she would know how to get her father's number!

Zero thought for a moment. Technically speaking it wasn't her business what Anna did, but to give her caretakers the slip could put the caretakers in trouble as well as Anna. Then again it wasn't her duty just yet. "I'm sure I can talk them around. I can be very persuasive when I want to be." Zero smiled softly at the girl. Zero adjusted her hat a little so she could see the girl a bit better and her smile widened a little. "So shall we go?"
