He jerked awake, a cold sweat on his forehead, his breath ragged. His room was quiet and dark except for him. James rarely slept well, nightmares and insomnia saw to that.

Sitting up he whipped the sweat away, he knew he wouldn't be able to get back to sleep, so he saw no point in trying. Slipping out of bed, he pulled on a pair of sweats and out the door he went.

He'd wandered a while, found a drink machine and bought a bottle of cold coffee. He didn't really like them, but he was addicted to coffee so it didn't matter.

So he wandered the halls, no real direction, somehow ended up in the college dorms. His thoughts went to Anna, he cared about her, more than he realized.

Humming in thought, he walked to her dorm. As he reached to knock, something happened, the halls seemed to light up. His unopened bottle of coffee dropped as his hands went to cover his eyes. At first he thought the lights had come on, but they hadn't. The hall was now like high noon to him.

Flinching, he backed up, covering his eyes as pain shot through them, his elbow accidentally knocking against Anna's door. He slid down the wall next to the door as the pain continued.

Anna was half asleep when the sound of something falling to the floor and then hitting her door - which was an odd sequence of events - jarred her awake. She'd always been a fairly light sleeper, so strange noises tended to wake her up pretty much immediately. She sighed and opened her eyes, glancing at the electric alarm clock on her nightstand that told her it was some time around one in the morning. Perhaps it was a fellow college student stumbling back to their room? She listened as something stumbled around in the hallway and finally slid to the ground. Well, she didn't want to wake up with vomit in front of her door, so...

Sliding out of bed, Anna padded across the floor in her t-shirt and shorts, shivering a little from leaving the warmth of her covers. She pulled open the door and looked out into the dimly lit hallway. "Hey, uh..." she began, her eyes adjusting to the darkness as she examined the lump that was sitting on the floor. Wait. She knew that lump. "James? You okay?" What was he doing here in the middle of the night?

"What the fuck is happening!?" the Shadow asked as he woke up, looking through James' eyes. James of course was unable to answer. His breath quickened as panic set in, the newly developed night vision started painfully fluctuate, seeming to pulse on and off.

His hands shot up to cover his ears as the pain spread to them, he could hear a door open, someone say his name it wall to loud. Gritting his teeth, his entire body started to tremble, it was overwhelming, even his nose was burning now.

Looking over, he saw Anna, he didn't know it, but his eyes briefly turned silver. He took a big breath, trying to focus, the pain lessened a bit, but his senses continued to go into overdrive. "I..I don't know...what's happening."

Anna frowned at him, watching the pain cross his face as his eyes flickered between colors. She didn't know what was happening, either, but it didn't seem to be anything good. She left her door open as she stepped across the hall. He seemed like he was having some kind of sensory overload. She wasn't sure what kind of respite it would offer, but she channeled her calm energy and crouched in front of James, reaching out to put her hand gently on his shoulder and letting the calm flow through her fingers and into him.

"Can you tell me what you're feeling?" she murmured, trying to keep her voice as low as possible. If this was a sensory overload, which...was strange, but anyways...if this was what she thought it was, then everything was going to feel painful for a while. She found his eyes with hers. His pupils were shrunken, as though the hallway were very bright...

"I'm just going to make sure you don't have a fever," she told him quietly before leaning forward and touching her cheek to his forehead...it would be more accurate than her cold hands. Nope, no fever. He just seemed...overwhelmed.

He closed his eyes as she transferred a feeling of calmness to him. I was as if his senses were taking everything in at once, his eyes ached, his ears rung and nose burnt. The Shadow went silent, he was as shocked and confused as James was, maybe even more so, he didn't remember ever having a body, let alone senses.

James felt Anna press her cheek to his head, his nose twitched as he picked up on the perfume she'd worn the day before. In the blur of his senses overloading his mind, he felt something, something he couldn't quite understand yet.

"A-anna...," he stammered, trying to focus on her, a light at the end of a painful confusing tunnel. His vision blurred again, he body started trembling, he gritted his teeth as the pain peaked.

Then, it was gone, his eyesight, hearing and smelling were all normal again. He blinked his eyes as they faded into their normal gay-silver eyes, like metal dulling with age. A gasp and a sigh escaped his mouth as relief flowed over him.

He rose from his crouch, still trembling badly, "I...I..," he took another a breath, "I'm sorry, I don't know what happened." James felt himself sway just a bit, "couldn't sleep..started walking around." Looking down, he remembered his coffee and picked the bottle up, "I...I wanted to talk."

He seemed to recover, and Anna felt a little bit of relief spread through her system. She withdrew her hand from his shoulder as he started to get to his feet, but there was still some concern in her eyes as she watched him, ready to catch him if he started to falter again. "Well, that was certainly weird," she told him. Perhaps he was just tired...lack of sleep could do strange things to people, even cause hallucinations in severe cases.

"Here, come in and lay down," she pushed open the door to gently guide him into her room. He looked like he needed to rest. Anna herded him towards the bed, taking his coffee from him in the process. "You need sleep, not caffeine," she chided gently, setting the bottle on her desk. Once she'd gotten him to lay down, she sat next to him on her bed, not really thinking much about having him stay in her bed with her. She shared her bed with her brothers all the time, this wasn't really too different, right? They were just friends.

"What did you want to talk about?" she asked gently, shifting a little to get comfortable.

He followed her into the dorm, his mind settling but overtaken by the troubles that had awakened him "Oh..yeah..," he said as she took his coffee, "I...uh...might be a little addicted to caffeine," he cleared his throat knowing she was going to be concerned.

Sliding into bed, he looked over at her, he was always either nervous as if embarrassed or incredibly comfortable around her. This time, maybe thanks to her powers, he was comfortable. His gray-silver eyes showed his gratitude for everything she'd done for her, "thank you."

His hand reached out and brushed over hers, "remember when..I had my breakdown, and...I told you things?" She was the only person he'd told everything to, even Nyota didn't know everything. "There's....there's something else...."

Addictions to caffeine were rather commonplace, especially with people who didn't sleep well, like James. He really should break the habit...even something as seemingly harmless as caffeine was still bad for you in high doses. Even she had to limit her caffeine intake, despite the occasional long nights she pulled when she had too much work to do and not enough time to do it in. College was hard like that. Especially when one was planning to be a nurse. Maybe she should pick an easier career, like...music? She'd have to make some serious considerations before switching like that, though.

Anna took his hand easily in hers as he touched her, letting the calm flow through her and into him once again, her shoulders relaxing. She kept her breathing slow and even, though raised an eyebrow as he spoke to her. "Okay. Well, you know you can tell me anything," she offered, with mild intrigue. What else did he have to tell her?

He opened his mouth and closed it again. It was hard, so hard to talk about. Taking a shaky breath, he gently squeezed her hand and looked at her, fear in his eyes. James cares about her, so much, his emotions wouldn't let him realize it yet, but he could feel enough. Enough to know he didn't want her to hate him.

"I..I told you I left that group of thieves," he finally said, still holding onto her hand. "I'd been with them my whole life..," he found himself scooting a bit closer to her, as if searching for comfort from her.

"For a while.....I was putting money away, a bit from everything I stole," his eyes didn't leave her, he needed her, he didn't know it but he did. "Something...happened when I left."

"James," she said gently, squeezing his hand a little, "you know that I will never judge you for what's happened in your past. None of it was your fault." Shifting, she settled down in the bed next to him and put her arms around him. He seemed like he needed comfort, and she intended to provide that for him. There must have been so few times where he felt like he was safe...and she wished so often that she could take his fears away from him, though she knew she couldn't change his difficult history.

"I know that you've been through a lot," she continued, curling up and putting her head against his chest. He may have been younger than her, but he was still bigger - she had always been small for her age, occasionally even mistaken for a child. "But it's made you who you are today, and you've come such a long way from where you used to be."
