"Whassa 'mission?" She inquired, peering upward in thought. "Live in stars with Dae?" She inquired, throwing questions left and right — though she was distracted briefly by her wiggling toes, giggling under her breath.

Shay wasn't sure how to explain what a different dimension was to a five-year-old, but she wasn't keen on making something cute up, either. "It's like a different world, but kind of the same." That was the best she had so it was what Dae got.

"And I couldn't live in the stars with you. I'm not able. I have to live here, on earth."

"But... I never wanna leave you, Shay." She crinkled her nose at the older girl, "I don' ever wanna leave Shay." She grumbled, crossing her arms. "'cause nice." She stated, as if Shay being nice was the best reason to never want to leave the older girl, ever.

Shay knew that she and Dae's separation was an inevitability. Life dragged people away from each other. All the same, Manta Carlos was small, and they'd see each other for sure unless one or both of them moved off the island. That all seemed too complicated for a child to understand.

She laid her hand on Dae's head and gently mussed her hair. "Why do you have to live in the stars?" she asked instead, wondering if that was what Dettae had been getting at.

Dettae peered upward, reaching up to pat at the older girl's hand, that rested atop her head. "'cause you said so." She stated, frowning softly to herself. Did she misunderstand Shay? Her brow furrowed in worry, and she shuffled her feet quietly.

"I didn't mean it like that," Shay went on explaining, too tired to keep up with a child's mentality. Shay suppressed a wince when Dae reached up and pat her hand.

She wondered how to explain that she wouldn't be in the orphanage forever. That Shay was in the adoption process now. That was something someone so young might not understand. Shay couldn't talk to kids.

"Just because someone isn't around doesn't mean they've left you," she tried.
